Bean, chickpea, and lentil dishes last a week in the fridge (probably more tbh).

Also, if you have a desk/cube, a great tip I picked up from a vegan friend is to keep a jar of peanut butter and a spoon in your drawer. Before I became remote, I would eat about 2 tablespoons at 10, 3, and 5. Probably not quite as good as the protein balls but cheap and effective.

Seems like people don’t think about it that way. Blaming “capitalism” for everything you don’t like is easy, but all it means is that these things exist because consumers want them. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be paying for it.

This means people in the test market are clicking on those ads. Not much we can do about it at that point - it works therefore they’ll use it.

I love reading judgy comments from people sitting on their ass watching a stranger do something incredible.

Hamas official says group would lay down its arms if an independent Palestinian state is established ( apnews.com )

A top Hamas political official told The Associated Press the Islamic militant group is willing to agree to a truce of five years or more with Israel and that it would lay down its weapons and convert into a political party if an independent Palestinian state is established along pre-1967 borders.

In Western news and media, everything has to boil down to a good vs evil story. It’s part of the reason our society has become so polarized. In reality, there’s often no good sides in a conflict.

Survey finds that 60 firms are responsible for half of world’s plastic pollution ( www.theguardian.com )

The two tobacco companies Altria and Philip Morris International combined made up 2% of the branded plastic litter found, both Danone and Nestlé each produced 3% of it, PepsiCo was responsible for 5% of the discarded packaging, and 11% of branded plastic waste could be traced to the Coca-Cola company.

yoyolll ,
@yoyolll@lemmy.world avatar

I wonder that any time these statistics are brought up. Like 100 companies are responsible for 70% of greenhouse gases - well isn’t it cause there’s 8 billion people buying their shit? They’re not just running those factories for the fun of it.

I just want to know where it is so I can make sure to avoid it.

The majority of the aluminum in circulation in the US is recycled. It’s significantly more than even glass and paper. The reason is because it’s much cheaper to use recycled aluminum than raw.

But you’re right when it comes to plastic.

What's the draw of watching/following streamers?

I’ve watched some here and there, but having to try to catch them when they stream has put me too much in the mind of old tv and catching shows when they air. Watching the recording afterward is maybe good for some white noise, but it’s clearly not the intended experience I think.

10 years ago I was like “why tf would I want to watch someone play a video game when I could just play it myself?”

Now I’m like “why tf would I play this game when I could just watch someone else?”

I guess I’m still interested in what’s going on in gaming in general, but I don’t have any desire to go through all the bullshit of a modern AAA game with a huge repetitive open world, dozens of half assed shallow mechanics (rpg/perk system, loot, crafting etc.), homogenized design, predatory DLC/mtx, and all that. I’d rather play Factorio and watch a streamer play whatever hot new game people are into.

U.S. unveils $1 billion Ukraine weapons package ( www.washingtonpost.com )

The United States will send a substantial security package to Ukraine, including badly needed air defense systems and artillery rounds, the White House said Wednesday, as the administration — its war chest replenished after months of gridlock in Congress — moves quickly to help Kyiv counter a resurgent Russian campaign....

I think there’s a lot of self selection going on. Most people who migrated here did it based on principles (or a persecution complex), so of course they will have lots of political opinions, often extreme. Frankly, it’s getting a little tiring seeing it everywhere. Even on gaming subs it seems like every other post results in a discussion about the evils of capitalism.

yoyolll ,
@yoyolll@lemmy.world avatar

Most of the news subs on Lemmy are just cynical pity parties for first world problems. Idk what to make of people here. Wealthy educated countries with historically low unemployment and yet no one can seem to find a decent job.

yoyolll ,
@yoyolll@lemmy.world avatar

Good thing the US underemployment rate, which includes part time workers, is also at near historic lows (7.3%). I’m not saying everything is honky dory, but this obsession with how hard our generation (millennials) has it, in denial of living in the wealthiest parts of the world at the most prosperous and peaceful times in human history, is pathetic.

yoyolll ,
@yoyolll@lemmy.world avatar

I hope things get better for your friends. Tech is taking a hit right now.

I had trouble finding work after college, had to work some shit jobs and move around a lot, but I was never out of options, never at risk of going hungry or not sleeping in a bed. It takes a hell of a lot to go hungry or homeless in the US. There’s an insane amount of industry, wealth, and opportunity here.

Meanwhile, in my home country, there is 70% inflation in the past year. There is war everywhere on the borders (and conscription). There is no opportunity for young people. Inflation has destroyed most people’s ability to emigrate or get an American/European education. They’re just stuck there with a crumbling economy, a refugee crisis (about 10% of the population), an increasingly religious and oppressive government, and the constant threat of war.

It’s hard to see so many posts like these complaining about how hard everything is for people living in US, UK, Canada, France etc. from people with the most disposable income in the world, the highest carbon footprints, the biggest cars, the most meat consumption, good labor laws.

Yes, we should still strive to improve things. There are tons of problems in this system that result in conflict and inequality. But this kind of article is the epitome of first world problems from privileged people.

This whole site is filled with these cynical, self-pitying posts so we can all read them and think “yeah, everything is so unfair for me, everyone else had it so much easier” like everything is happening to us, and we have no control or agency in our own happiness and satisfaction. We bear no responsibility for our own situation. We live in the best part of the world in the best time of human history, yet we’re all miserable because everything is so terrible and hard.

@yoyolll@lemmy.world avatar

There are plenty of employee owned businesses. You should work for one, or, better yet, make one.

yoyolll ,
@yoyolll@lemmy.world avatar

It’s the same in biotech and pharma. We are basically always hiring skilled labor, even during layoffs. You can get a 6 week certificate that will land you a manufacturing job for $80k per year plus OT. No college needed. Many companies will even pay for it if you agree to a 6 month contract with them.

Reddit stock is falling back to Earth because the short-sellers have arrived ( qz.com )

Some 7% of Reddit’s free share float (or more) has been sold short so far, according to an estimate from the analytics company Ortex cited by Reuters. That’s something the social platform was worried would happen, noting in its prospectus that retail traders in its subreddits (and particularly on r/WallStreetBets) could...

yoyolll ,
@yoyolll@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t think so. I mean, some publications might, but big ones like Bloomberg and Reuters have acknowledged since the IPO that the major investors believe it is well overvalued. IIRC they reported that Fidelity and Blackrock gave it a $5B valuation. I recall another major investor cited the difficulty of feeding paid ads to its user base in the current community based format, and unsuccessful attempts to push profile/user centric “feeds” (similar to Facebook and Twitter) instead.

Eating beans, rice, lentils, peas, etc. is way cheaper than meat. A 4 lbs bag of chickpeas is $6 and provides 6,500 calories of mostly dietary fiber and protein.

Cooking is something you have to do, just like laundry and washing yourself. I’m not sure if this is a western thing or what, but for most people in the world, the less money you have, the more you cook. Eating prepared foods and meat is expensive.

yoyolll ,
@yoyolll@lemmy.world avatar

You can complain all you want about how poor you are that you can’t eat beans and lentils, but the entire world outside of US, Canada, and Western Europe is proof of the contrary.

It takes 20 minutes to cook lentils and rice. 30 to cook beans if you have a pressure cooker. These foods are dirt cheap, shelf stable, and sold everywhere. My local gas station sells Goya beans.

I’m sorry about your situation, but cooking and feeding yourself is just part of living whether vegan or not. This widespread idea in the US that being poor means you should be eating expensive unhealthy prepared meals is strange. It will only make your situation worse.

yoyolll ,
@yoyolll@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, and I addressed them. And frankly, I’m getting a little tired of people in the wealthiest countries in the world complaining that they don’t have time to cook beans, so instead they’re going to buy a beef cheeseburger cooked and assembled for them for $2.

I have lived in bad neighborhoods. I’ve worked shit jobs. I’ve bought bags of Goya green lentils from a gas station.

If you don’t want to, you don’t have to, but stop with this “poor people can’t afford to eat anything but McDonald’s and frozen dinners” thing.

yoyolll ,
@yoyolll@lemmy.world avatar

Is there something wrong with rice and beans? I eat both of those daily. If the only thing that gives you pleasure is a fat and salt filled cheeseburger, that’s a separate issue.

And anyway, this argument went from “it’s too expensive” to “it takes too much time” to “it’s not good”. We can just agree to disagree. No one is forcing you to eat something you don’t want.

yoyolll ,
@yoyolll@lemmy.world avatar

I’m sure this is a bad faith argument and you don’t really think “rice and beans” means literally only rice and beans boiled in plain water, but just in case, you can throw in a couple veggies. Or not, since you live in a food desert that only serves McDonald’s, working 2 jobs to put cheeseburgers on the table for your kids so you don’t even have time to slice an onion. Sorry for being cruel 😊.

Revealed: a California city is training AI to spot homeless encampments ( www.theguardian.com )

Sometimes it does seem like everyone’s on a soapbox or cynical crusade about some shit or another and you’re a bad person if you don’t know or care.

Lots of places on Reddit and Twitter also feel that way. I think it’s just an inherent part of mass online interaction.

yoyolll ,
@yoyolll@lemmy.world avatar

I got one even though I deleted all my posts and comments months ago. I have not engaged on Reddit since then.

Also, what is the threshold? I only have 14k post and 19k comment karma which is pretty low considering the size and age of Reddit. I don’t think I’ve ever even posted anything in a large sub, just niche hobby ones.

Are they just asking everyone now?

yoyolll ,
@yoyolll@lemmy.world avatar

I guess it’s combined 25k since I got the message. A massive number of casual users will qualify for that considering Reddit has been around for over a decade.

Are they really just spamming out a scam email to hundreds of thousands of their users? They can’t get a good enough valuation with real investors so they’re banking on having enough non-financially savvy people in their massive user base to be able to cash out with a valuation they know is bullshit? Really?

Considering there are legal requirements to become an accredited investor for private companies, I’m surprised something like this (and on this scale) is even allowed. Isn’t this fraud?

yoyolll ,
@yoyolll@lemmy.world avatar

Idk if that helps your point as it’s simultaneously one of the most studied and least understood things in physics. Although I doubt a creationist could mount that argument.

yoyolll ,
@yoyolll@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t think they care about this feature. Presumably, they don’t see enough people using it to justify properly maintaining it, much less improving it.

As others have said, Moonlight + Sunshine works much better. Add Moonlight as a non-Steam game on your Deck and set it to launch Big Picture directly on your host. That’s my setup and it’s pretty seamless. Ever since the Big Picture update for the desktop client, I forget I’m even streaming sometimes because the interface is the same.

yoyolll ,
@yoyolll@lemmy.world avatar

Is there still an advantage to doing it this way after the desktop Big Picture update? Is it different than using the controller configuration menu on the host PC?

yoyolll ,
@yoyolll@lemmy.world avatar

Oh cool, I didn’t realize that was possible. That would be a great reason to use the plugin. I never really play non controller supported games with the Deck, so I just have the track pads set to mouse and scroll for the occasional desktop task on the host and the paddles set to Moonlight shortcuts.
