Wuch…I hear you….the “slammed, blasted, murdered, nuked, destroyed” in the headlines when some person has a civilized worded counter opinion to whatever somebody else said for instance.

The Fantastic Four is an unreleased 1994 superhero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The film features the team's origin and first battle with Doctor Doom. Executive-produced by low-budget specialists Roger Corman and Bernd Eichinger, it was made to allow...

9 years later, I finally played fallout 4

Having dropped New Vegas in the past due to lost interest, I decided to try this game out finally since a friend of mine was having a fallout 3 playthrough himself. It was it 8 bucks, so I figured why not. I have to say, I put way more hours into this game than both other Bethesda games I've played through (Skyrim and Oblivion)...

Sperm whales rattle off pulses of clicks while swimming together, raising the possibility that they’re communicating in a complex language.

Credit...Amanda Cotton

May 7, 2024
Ever since the discovery of whale songs almost 60 years ago, scientists have been trying to decipher their lyrics. Are the animals producing complex messages akin to human language? Or sharing simpler pieces of information, like dancing bees do? Or are they communicating something else we don’t yet understand?

In 2020, a team of marine biologists and computer scientists joined forces to analyze the click-clacking songs of sperm whales, the gray, block-shaped leviathans that swim in most of the world’s oceans. On Tuesday, the scientists reported that the whales use a much richer set of sounds than previously known, which they called a “sperm whale phonetic alphabet.”

People have a pho-ne-tic alphabet too, which we use to produce a practically infinite supply of words. But Shane Gero, a marine biologist at Carleton University in Ottawa and an author of the study, said it’s unclear whether sperm whales similarly turn their phonetic sounds into a language.

“The fundamental similarities that we do find are really fascinating,” Dr. Gero said. “It’s totally changed the way we have to do work going forward.”

Since 2005, Dr. Gero and his colleagues have followed a clan of 400 sperm whales around Dominica, an island nation in the eastern Caribbean, eavesdropping on the whales with u

Jamie Oliver does dreadful things to "Thai" curry's.

I use an Indonesian oelekan for curry's. Takes some time but there is nothing better than a mortar and pestle.

A food processor won't give you the authentic taste as an oelekan, but grating an onion is just more Jamie Oliver bs, better use the processor..

Only a 2 or 3 cups a week, my wife does all the heavy coffee drinking, we have an espresso machine and a cup one.

I mostly drink carbonated water and tea and sometimes a double espresso (fresh ground beans) with some cream. Sometimes when I really enjoy the cup of coffee I will take another cup.

How do people actually dumpster dive to get free food? Are there any other cheap/free ways like this to get food?

My local food bank can only provide 8 packages with referrals every time before you run out, and I have, but my situation hasn't improved financially due to various set backs and I'm struggling to feed myself. I've heard that supermarkets throw out massive amounts, but have never been in a position where dumpster diving seemed...

Chicken filet plain cooked and shredded into thin strips. I make it for Surinam Bami and always give the cat some. When I make bami he is always close on the lookout for his share. It is gone in seconds, eats like a hungry dog.

Also chicken livers cooked and finely chopped or puréed.

Normally he eats BARF…hehe.

Well if your out after a month you'll be screwed anyway. But right now I could survive a couple of months with three others.

I already have 2 freezers full of meat, frozen veg, herbs, ingredients like galanga, pandan leaves, lemon grass, Thai basil, hot peppers and what not.

Canned beans, corn, other veg, pasta, couscous, flower for chapatis and parathas, boxes full of spices from all over the world, and I always buy 18 kilo bags of Thai rice.

Beans and rice, so nice. Cheap and fulfilling.

Yeah...but I guess I should learn urban farming. If I see someone hungry I need to cook, I can't leave anyone starving, so this stuff would be gone in days.

I made falafel and lentil flat bread ( lemmy.ca )

I made baked falafel with red lentil flat bread for the wrap. I baked them just because it's easier then frying all these for a family but, still they are delicious. The lentil wraps are great with it as well. Honestly, 7-10 years ago if you told me that some of my favorite meals to make would be plant based.... I'd chuckle and...

Looks delicious and I like to eat falafel right now. I am not familiar with lentils wraps, care to share your recipe?

I do make falafel myself, but sometimes I have trouble with them falling apart when frying as I use fresh chick peas, so I add chick pea flower when that happens. With baking them that is not a problem, but I think frying them gives a better crunch and taste.

Thanks for posting, Dustwin.

I liked all three games and I hope they continue. I think I liked the first game best, Legion the least but I still enjoyed it.

It's nice to see a movie based in Chicago as a guy from the Netherlands and say, hey I have been there in Watch Dogs

Excuse me for reacting this late.

Taking out enemies with cameras, gadgets and traps in an open world is pretty nice. Gameplay a bit different in every game.

The story in the first one, wasn't that interesting to me and a lot of reviewers talked about how wooden Aiden Pierces personality was. Also suicidal killer cop cars that will run over everyone and everything to get to you, hehe.

Second game is different in story and setting (San Francisco), mechanics and controls slightly different. I liked it, but again not for the story, same with the third, where everyone talks in street slang bruv...but the open world, stealth, drones, puzzles and hacking made me sink 60 hours into that game. Haven't played the DLC for Legion, one can play Aiden Pierce, but I am not sure it is worth the price, even at discount.

Here in South Netherlands Heineken is not very popular. We drink the local brands. Alfa, Gulpener, Brand. I don't drink Heineken, if I drink beer it is mostly local, German Kölsch or Belgian Trappist beer.

Because only women are worried about becoming step-parents? (This prolly could've been an Ask Lemmy.) ( lemmy.world )

I’m looking for some good reading on how to, eventually, best help be a step parent to my partner’s children and NEARLY ALL books are geared toward the woman’s perspective as though men don’t want to be a strong teacher and develop these kids into healthy adults. Ugh!...

I had 3 dads in my childhood and I turned out fine, broken but fine. My son never experienced what I had to go through. So I kinda learned how not to parent.

I think being patient, soft spoken when correcting, being structural, reliable and open on your own feelings towards anything and giving kids a choice in walking their own path in some extent...kids will do alright.

I remember this painting. My parents are into antroposphy / theosophy, and we had many old folklore and fairy tail books. I had a poster of him in my bedroom from 'Among Gnomes and Trolls'

Tragically died at 36, 3 years after painting this.

Not really the same but I knew the artist personally in my childhood and it is in the style of the antroposphical movement, which I do not approve of, it is like a cult. We used to go to her farm often and I played on the piano and watch her paint. Her husband was a concert pianist if I recall correct...long time ago.
