There are plenty of other things we could do to limit corruption before we rule out term limits for that reason. We could also think about politicians who feel more free to "do the right thing" even when unpopular because they won't be afraid about winning the next election.

LesserAbe ,

That seems like a lot of reps... Do you know of any comparisons with other democracies and their legislatures?

As far as letting parties emerge I think we should have proportional representation / ranked choice voting.

LesserAbe ,

Seems to be the elf is setting themselves up to receive the human's inheritance money. If they play their cards right they could pull this scam many times

LesserAbe ,

You're right they have a fiduciary duty. I think what the other commenter was saying is that the interpretation of that duty can be twisted into all kinds of shapes. If someone believed in pro social ideas they could make the case that treating workers with respect and growing sustainably is the best way to continue making money. That a shareholder would demand other crueler or more short-sighted policies doesn't mean a legal requirement.

LesserAbe ,

The article actually says they're developing a device to transfer them from one track to the other

LesserAbe ,

Fun idea, I hope it works! In the states I don't think there's sufficient abandoned rail that's also near population centers for this to succeed.

LesserAbe ,

That would be a neat feature. I remember in college which was in the middle of nowhere our professor was trying to promote a bike trail between the two closest towns, because there used to be train tracks going through. Good to get anything, like a recreational path, but I'd prefer transport that serves commuting needs too.

LesserAbe ,

Pakal's so great but he doesn't have Bluetooth

LesserAbe ,

This all sounds much easier than paying a ticket

LesserAbe ,

Looks like picture was taken from a jeep or some other sort of vehicle with a soft top, and we're seeing that top hanging down into the shot

LesserAbe ,

Yeah, I know we're all shitting on Elon by proxy, but the multipla, Aztec, pt cruiser, Chevy SSR and plenty others are uglier.

LesserAbe ,

I would probably take a pt cruiser just because of the reputational risk of driving a cyber truck - that people will think you're an Elon stan. But purely from a looks perspective I think the cyber truck looks way better.

LesserAbe ,

Rude

LesserAbe ,

Yeah I know some people like it. Only reason it was on my mind was my mom was talking about wanting one the other day and I had to look it up.

LesserAbe ,

Taste is subjective so if someone doesn't like it that's valid.

For me, designs are successful based on the impression and experience they give people. The cyber truck to me gives off a futuristic vibe, it's intentional, it's a design that knows what it wants. Minimal polygons, minimal rounded edges. Uncommon material/finish. Visually striking, unique, memorable.

I think the Aztec isn't a good design because it wants to be futuristic but doesn't go far enough. Because it's trying to retain some traditional elements it looks like design by committee.

My impression is the pt cruiser and SSR were intended to be modern takes on retro/classy designs from say, the 50s. In the sense that they're curved they succeed, but the curves are in the wrong places and the curve radiuses are wrong. They look bubbly. They look like toys. The effect is amplified because they don't have a lot of the fine detail that was present on old cars.

LesserAbe ,

To clarify I'm talking about aesthetics. I'm not defending anything safety wise. But that's an unrelated argument from "it's ugly".

It's clearly an emotionally charged object, which is why in one of my other comments here I said I'd probably accept a pt cruiser instead, just because people make the instant connection between the truck and elon musk.

Solarpunk Workshop ( slrpnk.net )

This is one I’ve had on my list for months now, and I finally decided to just go ahead and make it. Back when I was researching solar cookers, solar concentrator, and solar furnaces, I ran into a few really interesting ideas around fresnel lenses. Look them up on youtube and you can find all kinds videos of people melting...

LesserAbe ,

Those are cool links, and a fun idea, thanks!

LesserAbe ,

If you students don't quiet down we're turning this graduation around and going home

LesserAbe ,

Sorry to further bum but this article says his dog was lingering around the neighbors house after the kidnapping so it's suspected the neighbor killed the dog. It was found poisoned in front of their house.

This article says the only reason the kidnapper's family member snitched was because of an inheritance dispute.

Google's call-scanning AI could dial up censorship by default, privacy experts warn ( techcrunch.com )

A feature Google demoed at its I/O confab yesterday, using its generative AI technology to scan voice calls in real time for conversational patterns associated with financial scams, has sent a collective shiver down the spines of privacy and security experts who are warning the feature represents the thin end of the wedge. They...

LesserAbe ,

"Thin end of the wedge" is a good way to put it.

LesserAbe ,

Trouble is when everybody else uses it, just because you turn it off doesn't mean you won't have issues.

LesserAbe ,

Commenter in another thread highlighted that people in New Caledonia are French citizens with the right to vote in French elections, and that there have been three referendums in New Caledonia where in each of them a majority voted to stay.

What is the most appropriate way of tracking web traffic?

I have my personal blog, made with Hugo and hosted on GitHub pages. Initially I did not turn on any kind of web tracking / web analytics, because I do not like tracking at all. But I want to make my blog better and to achieve it, I need a feedback loop about traffic. For example, what are the most popular publications, or how...

LesserAbe ,

I was using plausible for one of my projects and had a good experience.

LesserAbe ,

I like "I'll bet he's nice". The synths are really interesting on the album. Can't say it's something I want to listen to all the time though. I appreciate Brian Wilson.

LesserAbe ,

I don't think that's healthy for the tree

LesserAbe ,

That's supposed to say "cave" right? Not cove? (Which I always took to be a sort of micro bay)

LesserAbe ,

I assume there's a history of this kind of thing somewhere before right? Or did these guys just happen to watch the latest season of Fargo

LesserAbe ,

Nice. I usually like this person's videos

LesserAbe ,

Oof. That's a shitty time for everybody.

LesserAbe ,

I've never heard of trophy eyes before, but unless you're a big act most of these bands take home less than say, a white collar job. And odds seem good they'll get sued too. So I'm not surprised they're not throwing cash around

LesserAbe ,

This article appears to be from February 2024. I tried googling to see what's the latest news related to the ICJ, I see that Egypt wants to join South Africa's case against Israel: https://www.commondreams.org/news/egypt-icj-israel

Were those lizards supposed to be sentient?

If Reddit had a soul/conscience, I think it was us, and we're all on Lemmy now...

As a little background, I didn't actively use Reddit for months following the blackout. I still barely stop in over there and if I do I'm never logged in our contributing to the communities there (where I was previously a daily poster/commenter)....

LesserAbe ,

I generally agree with your point, that said, in the analogy you gave, the flavor would come from the posts, not the users. We don't know what the breakdown is between "active users" who create more posts and comments and those who are more like active readers.

LesserAbe ,

I'm just assuming the gallows were added later

LesserAbe ,

I grew up in a house with well water, no fluoride. I've had a million cavities, and my dentist suggested that was a contributing factor, although certainly diet and genetics are too.

LesserAbe ,

Also, wish I had a link to the article, but I was reading about how whether you "have" a cavity depends on your dentist's interpretation of the x-rays and their philosophy about treatment. Some dentists will see a light area and say "let's fill that before it gets worse" and others will note it and see how things develop. It was actually pretty alarming because sounds like professional standards for dentistry are looser than some other areas of medicine, and the description rang true for some of the dentists I've seen.

LesserAbe ,

Yeah, I would much prefer if someone framed it that way than "you have decay, let's schedule an appointment for a filling"

LesserAbe ,

I think I had one treatment as an adult. But a dental hygienist recommended rinsing every night with the purple Listerine that has fluoride in it, which... hasn't hurt? I think it's doing the trick and I haven't had more cavities since, but of course couldn't say for sure if that's why.

The toll road scam: A government-made monopoly you pay for.

Here's a funny-because-it's-true take on Transurban and the poor tax it imposes, from Punter's Politics:

LesserAbe ,

I don't like when government funded projects are sold to private corporations. I like government funded infrastructure though.

LesserAbe ,

You're right about buying new cars.

That said, no car is an investment, in terms of it appreciating in value. I'm sure you know that just I've seen some comments along those lines when people talk about electric cars depreciating.

I would never buy any vehicle that's 10-20 years old if I have any other options available. A lot of shelf life used up at that point.

I bought a used 2023 bolt this year with only 5k miles on it. My previous car was a new 2008 Kia and I figured out with inflation I paid about the same for that one as I will for this one.

I've been very happy with it so far.

LesserAbe ,

I thought "what a refreshing change of pace, a woman murderer"

LesserAbe ,

Yeah what the heck? How does this guy use electric for regular things, let alone a car?
