At some point that must have been the idea behind this logo. Would be interesting to hear from the original artist why they decided to go in a different direction with it.

And Sony is still complaining about bad sales... I wonder if Microsoft will even bother with another console again. I guess they will pull a SEGA and just start selling games on other consoles.

poVoq ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

That seems very unlikely as the Switch was incredibly successful and Nintendo has no reason to merge with anyone.

The only one of the three big console producers that is likely to change to a different model regarding hardware is Microsoft. Maybe they will not drop out entirely, but it is unlikely that they will try to compete again with a future PS6.

I wonder what happens if the cable that carries this much power breaks under water. And even if it doesn't break the elecro-magnetic field around it is gonna be massive.

But anyway, other similar projects have either failed (plans to build such a giant solar-farm in Morocco) or have pivoted to "green" hydrogen as the energy transport medium.

Is Privacy Worth It? ( blog.thenewoil.org )

When I announced I would be closing my communities earlier this year, a curious thing happened: a surprising number of regulars replied with some variation of “I think this is my exit.” While some were specifically talking about Matrix, claiming that mine was the only room they were really active in and therefore they saw no...

The problem is that the so called privacy community is full of security LARPers that have no idea what their threat model is and in addition many snakeoil vendors trying to sell you (usually unnecessary or even counter-productive) VPNs etc.

So it's understandable that people get tired of these grifters and stop bothering.

For longform blogs we host Movim (which is also a nice federated chat app for Jabber/XMPP) and in addition we have a Dokuwiki where community moderators can make a dedicated wiki. Both are integrated with our Lemmy instance here, so you can just use your existing account user and password to log in.

@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Yes, for example there is /c/balconygardening here on the SLRPNK Lemmy and all the moderators of that community with an SLRPNK account can also edit the community specific wiki over here: https://wiki.slrpnk.net/balconygardening:start

These permisions are automatic and you can create as many wiki pages as you like under the specific wiki namespace.

Edit: Let me see if there is a nice QR code externsion for Dokuwiki that I can add. Edit: Ah: if you click on the menu and select "Export as PDF" the resulting PDF also includes a QR code to the page already.

Edit2: after reading your post again: yes you can of course also just link to external already existing website in a new Lemmy community that you create here.

Fedora KDE spin is a nice relative beginner friendly distro. But it doesn't really matter which one you use.

The main issue with dual booting is the initial setup and preventing Windows from messing up the Linux boot loader.

You can either install it on the same drive with different partitions and use the Linux boot loader to select the system to boot, or you can install it on a separate drive and use the boot override function of your mainboard to switch. The latter is a bit easier to setup and with no risk of Windows overwriting the Linux bootloader, but not all mainboards allow easy switching.

This incident wasn't a terrorist attack though, but rather a single individual with apparent mental health issues. Such attacks happen all the time, and this one only made the news because a person was killed and the attacker was of a certain ethic background.

Furthermore 208 attacks in a span of 18 years is laughably low, especially when compared to the thousands of right-wing attacks that happened during the same time.

poVoq Mod ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

No one in their right mind goes out and stabs their flatmate and a random 70 year old passerby, not even a wanna be terrorist. The deeply racist UK juridical system is not a good reference for deciding this.

And I am not here to do research for you, but if you spend even 5 minutes googling you will easily find that right-wing politically movitated violent crime easily dwarfs those figures (despite systematic under reporting of those by the police).

And while you are at it, look up domestic violence figures which are also orders of magnitude higher, even if you just count the ones with deaths or serious injuries.

Maybe speak to a union representative? I mean, aside from the ICE or electric question, the plan to move to privately owned cars is clearly an effort to push hidden costs onto their employees and the union might be interested in preventing that. And once that option is off the table, an electric fleet might become the next best option.

Except that at least Voice of Europe was used to launder bribes to EU right-wing politicians recently.

How do you envision Solarpunk Music?

Am curious if Solarpunk music is a thing or not yet? If it is please do share some links to tracks to check out, am very cruious. If it isnt a thing yet, what type of music do you imagined it would be like? I found this on the Tubes, which is very relaxing, ambiance type of music. This is personally the type of music I have in...

Its kinda cool how by making it mono-rail, they can use a single track rail to have pods moving in both directions, and the rail could still be used during the night for regular cargo trains.

poVoq OP Mod ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Good questions. I guess given how lightweight these pods look there could be probably some sort of lifting device at some of the stations to move the pods between the two rails.

poVoq OP Mod ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Not if it is strictly time separated. Like I wrote, I could see these pods operate exclusively during the day and regular/cargo trains operate exclusively during the night. Or any other such time based system.

poVoq OP Mod ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

No, these pods on existing rails are potentially a TON cheaper. Even if you don't count the cost of maintaining the road (which is significantly more than maintaining rail tracks), the need for paying a driver makes most small shuttle bus services prohibitively expensive.

poVoq OP Mod ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

At 3am? Come on. And that's also true for all public transport.

poVoq OP Mod ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Just dealing with with land rights for the extra space the second track would need is a nightmare. And the very idea of these is to use existing tracks without getting into new track construction.

poVoq OP Mod ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

The tracks are also already there, and gyroscope stabilized monorail is a 100+ year old technology, not much new to develop about it other than using modern battery technology and some basic self-driving features for it.

poVoq OP Mod ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

I happen to know the approximate area where this is being trialed, and a bike (even an electric one) is really only an alternative for hard-core all-weather bikers that have no problem driving 60+ kilometres a day.

The distances are just too far, the weather too bad 80% of the year, and the shrinking, elderly population too low density for other means of public transport to work economically.

The options are really either cars, such kind of novel ideas, or abandoning these tiny villages all together.

[Solved] Tumbleweed update killed my gaming

Has anyone else had this problem? I updated my openSuse Tumbleweed today (restart required), and now none of my games work. Most are through Steam, so at first I thought it was that. But I have Cyberpunk through GOG launched with Heroic. And even more, Alien Arena has the same problem, so it's not even a proton issue (I did try...

What a dumb comment. Scotland is an oil and gas exporter themselves. If anything you could blame them for being in the pockets of their own local fossil fuel industry.

Please consider finding a different news source next time as anything from Sky news is almost by default against rule 3 of this community.

poVoq Mod ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

The idea seems to be to have small modular units of which multiple can be installed in the needed capacity at sites of existing fossil fuel plants, not to have a lot of single units spread all over the place.

Alienation from other people and thinking they are not worth the bother is a relatively sure sign of depression.

I am not saying its only a you problem, and people around you are probably depressed as well, but I think it's worth viewing your interactions with other people through that self-reflective lense some time.

Modern electronic music is the spiritual successor to classical music (and modern-day "classical" compositions are just rehashes).

poVoq ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Mostly because electronic music is made by a single composer and that the performance by the musicians itself is not as central to the composition.

And that Mozart would be probably making electronic music if he was born in this era.

poVoq ,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

The composers are usually not the musicians though when it comes to classical music, especially since most of the composers are already dead 🤪

But just imagine a Beatles cover band becoming more famous than the Beatles themselves. Something like is common when it comes to orchestras that play classical music though.

Sure, there is some personality cult around famous conductors and so on, but that is really more comparable to DJs that remix but do not compose their own electronic music.

It's relatively popular in DACH countries.

I use it sometimes. It has its fair share of issues, and the back end is not open-source, but it is OK for the most part. Main benefit is that you don't need a mobile number to sign up.

But if you are looking for an alternative IM to use with friends and family, I would rather suggest XMPP, specifically Snikket.

Self-hosted website for posting web novel/fiction

Hey hello, self-hosting noob here. I just want to know if anyone would know a good way to host my writing. Something akin to those webcomic sites, except for writing.
