New homeowner, just sorta winging it... ( lemmy.world )

Having never owned a house or really had a yard of my own, I got pretty excited and decided to do some ad-hoc landscaping. Built some raised beds for vegetables, and just laying in some organic shaped in-ground beds for low water decorative plants. Gonna fill the rest in with gravel. Any pointers?

Not a homeowner myself yet, but one nice thing could be to out down gravel that's walkable barefoot. Idk about the rest of peeps, but I used to live in a house that had quite sharp gravel and it was almost obligatory to walk with shoes. If I were you I'd go with some light coloured shingle that's nice for barefoots. Just my first thought :)

Please do keep us posted with updates of how this turns out!

I also love the connection between the gutter into the flower/herb bed too! Although maybe a "better looking" solution could be something to look into in the future. Great work!

Wow! Thanks for sharing! LOVE that logo you spray painted onto the laptop - a nice touch. Did you design the logo yourself too? It should totally be the logo for the Solarpunk Technology Community!

If it's to any help to you or anyone else, you can now use DuckDuckGo AI chat, as a privacy layer. However it only has support for GPT 3.5 turbo.

How do you envision Solarpunk Music?

Am curious if Solarpunk music is a thing or not yet? If it is please do share some links to tracks to check out, am very cruious. If it isnt a thing yet, what type of music do you imagined it would be like? I found this on the Tubes, which is very relaxing, ambiance type of music. This is personally the type of music I have in...

Oh thanks for sharing, hadn't actually thought of checking if there was a community for this yet!

Definitely Godot, if you want a quick overview of it and or an introduction course it's very much worth checking out Brackeys on YT. He is an excellent teacher.

Hi there, as someone who is writing his master thesis on the privacy of fee vpns. I cannot recommend a single one. By that I mean the ones that advertise themselves as being a mainly free vpn. I have not had a look at privado in specific, but would highly recommend sticking to Proton. Their vpn is also fairly priced if you ask me.

Addtionally, if you want to quickly check out an app to see if they use excessive amounts of permissions(based on manifest file), and the implemented trackers they have you can use Exodus Privacy Tool;
https://reports.exodus-privacy.eu.org/en/reports/io.privado.android/latest/

Have sadly not checked these out in detail, however they do seem more promosing that the general free vpn one find by looking up "free vpn" on Google Play Store. Neither of them use excessive amounts of permissions, and the permssions they do ask for seem to fair to ask for. Neither of them have trackers implemented too which is nice. I would trust these more than other 'completelty free VPNs' atleast. However I'm only judging of first impressions and a quick look at their permissions. I'm assuming they lack features, speed etc..

If you want trust and transparency then options like Mullvad, Proton and IVPN would be my suggestions.

I've been through the same distro as you've mentioned in your post. With my own various issues. I switched to Bazzite a few months ago and could t be happier. It's by far the easiest Linux distro I've used, everything is set to work out of the box and the system cannot be borked. Bazzite also a great community behind it and murliple talanted people pushing this to be the best optimized gaming distro.

While Nobara is great in its own ways, and GE being an absolute legend for his work. I personally don't see any upsides to using it over Bazzite if you're mainly going to be playing games.

Do yourself the favour and try this before trying Nobara, just my two cents.

What file format do you store your media in?

Hello! I recently listened to a podcast that talked about how storing media files in .av1 format is very efficient and storage-friendly. I've been storing my files in .mkv format, but now I'm considering using Handbrake or a similar service to convert all my video files to .av1 if it's more compressed than .mkv. So;...

@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Ah nice recommendation, have seen that name been mentioned before but wasnt sure what it was for. Now I know! :)

Sunny OP ,

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Thanks again for the addtitional insights on this! I was indeed planning up picking up an Intel Arc 310 or a 380 later on as they are super cheap and seem to be excellent at hardware transcoding :)

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Yeah I simply wasnt aware of this, thought it was smart to change to the latest standards - but comments here have pointed out that its not worth chaning, plus it will change itself over time. Thanks anyways!

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Yeah I realised when a few others pointed it out. Learnt a lot from these comments, including yours. Thanks for clearing it up! 🙌

How much does it matter what type of harddisk i buy for my server?

Hello, I'm relatively new to self-hosting and recently started using Unraid, which I find fantastic! I'm now considering upgrading my storage capacity by purchasing either an 8TB or 10TB hard drive. I'm exploring both new and used options to find the best deal. However, I've noticed that prices vary based on the specific...

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Thanks for this, will read up and check out the links!

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

That is indeed my current issue haha, was not aware of that when I got into this; so currently have 10TB in parity and only use 3TB for my storage... So wanna get most of out of that parity by buying another disk.

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Thanks for the tips! I dought I'll be going higher that 50TB at max. Would SAS still be nessecary for that you reccon?

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Thanks for all the input and feedback - really appriciate it :) I still have quite the way to go to learn some of what these terms are. I have one PCI-e card for expanding the amount of Sata ports, wether is a cheapo card or not im not entierly sure(got it secondhand via a package deal), but have been using it for half a year now without any issues :)

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Thanks for the tip 🌻

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

Wasn't sure if that mattered or not in the case of Unraid. Had a feeling that only counted for the size of the disk. Just trying to make sure im not buying an expensive 10TB that I wont be able to use :P

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

I'll buy it used if it has been properly checked by another vendor before sold again. Otherwise I wont.

Sunny OP ,
@Sunny@slrpnk.net avatar

I live in Scandinavia so ebay isn't much of an option for us really. Also prefer to use lesser big-corp when buying tech, while more expensive usually worth it due to better warranty and customer service. But thanks for the suggestion nonetheless!
