Ms. Cecil said that she wanted to make clear to the legislators that "abortion is not black and white," explaining that every abortion is different. >

Maybe I'm reading into it, but this paragraph stood out to me.

ettyblatant ,
@ettyblatant@lemmy.world avatar

It's just a weird detail for the author to include. It's a "while I've still got you here..." sentence. It's entirely unnecessary except to make absolutely sure that everyone knows that she is not speaking in favor of those abortions.

Thank you to the men in the comments who react like humans with empathy!

But god damn there are a lot of people on this thread that are taking this VERY personally.

  1. Nobody is denying that men in our society deserve to be respected, nobody is saying IF YOU'RE A MAN FUCK YOU ID RATHER BE MAULED, and nobody is saying that women are always right no matter what.

  2. Of course the man could be weaker/not a threat. Of course he should be assumed safe. Of course everyone should respect all genders. And, OF COURSE, some women lie about rape! Yes! You do in fact have valid concerns!

HOWEVER,
It is really shitty some people commenting decide to take a clear example with obvious intentions and then make it about themselves, and then abuse women in the comments... you are proving the point, and in fact, you are a huge red flag already.

This question already sets the scene, you are alone in the woods: there is a strange man OR you are alone in the woods: there is a strange bear. The man's intentions (AND the bear's intentions) is not clear, we only know that he is there, and he is strange. No need to make up reasons why the guy is OK, minding his business, etc. Because in the situation given, the point of the question was to ask people how they would feel lost in the woods with a man or a bear, with such a small amount of information!

The question is trying to shed light on WHY the women asked said they prefer the bear. Do they think every man -at all- is a threat? Do they think that all men will overpower and harm them"because all men want to use their strength to rape/hurt women" because they are "biologically meant to*?* and, then, where do the fears come from and what can we do to change that? Why assume the worst when everything could be just fine?

I wish people would react more like "this is very depressing, and I understand why women are sometimes afraid of men in situations out of their control" or "I am doing my part to be a safe man ". But ask yourself, "do I know someone that would clearly make a woman feel unsafe to be around?" You might know more than one person like this, and they are why we talk about this in the first place.

The best way I've ever heard to describe this fear women live with is this: "when I approach a bees nest, it is highly unlikely they will attack me, they are usually docile!. That does not mean I won't try to avoid being stung. "

I feel like cats at least know where to go when it's loud outside, where to get food/water/rest in the calm, where to get all the pets and lovins before taking off,.. I don't think any animal is ready for bomb shakes but they'll get to the best place they can faster than we will for protection.

Too attached to their people to leave? How many outlived their adoptive family?

Now, I know nothing about nuthin', but I would guess any house kitties left behind in active war zone might not have lasted long. This cat in the pic is likely a stray, and he's seen some shit before any of those assholes even showed up. I bet a lot of house cats did survive, and went on the bring love to a new family as a fellow survivor.

---edit to replace "warrior" with "survivor", added a word---

Maybe it's "you are welcome (to ask me for help/favors, as I am neutral to the task. I might even enjoy it.)"

And "it's not a problem (for me to do what you asked me to do; we have now both acknowledged that I have done something to help you that was not organic to me, but now we can move past it with no further conversation.)"

I bet "no problem" to some people is like seeing someone wear a T-shirt to church. They'd really prefer it if you would put on a suit and tie, even though the purpose of both are the same (cover my body when away from home because that is our current social agreement), because a T-shirt is disrespectful.

Also everyone sucks, it is a problem, and you are not welcome.

Willy Wonka.

I hate the scene juxtaposition, everything feels like the whole filming process was struggling, the long drawn out portrait shots with weirdly sparkling eyes,... Idk. Even thinking about it makes me anxious

Vege bean burrito with too much hot sauce and extra lettuce.

I feel palpable guilt if I don’t eat one every 1-2 days. It’s funny to see this post; I was just talking myself out of making one because I’m not hungry (but I had something else to eat so I feel like I cheated in some way)

ETA this has been the case for 20 years. I had to take a 5 day DOT ferry and all I brought to eat was a cooler with 2 cans of beans, a package of tortillas, a head of lettuce, and 4 different hot sauces.

I honestly kind of thought that everyone did this until now

ettyblatant ,
@ettyblatant@lemmy.world avatar

I mean, it’s literally vege refried beans, lettuce, hot sauce, tortilla lol

I have variations with the hot sauce- my fave has always been habanero Tabasco! but sometimes I’ll use el yucateco, any high heat marie sharps, many unique sauces from stores all over, or any homemade sauces I have. Sometimes ghost pep salsa makes an appearance, but salsa makes the tortilla drippy so not always. I was adding x sharp Tillamook cheese for the first half of this diet but I’ve stopped craving cheese/dairy in the past 10 years or so

This happened to me once, on a flight from JFK to Columbus OH. I was pissed because I had traveled the last 22 hours to get out of southern France back to the states, and then got kicked from my final little flight home. They gave me $200 to their airline (Delta) that had an expiration date, and a room at DoubleTree to take me back to the airport next day.

I couldn’t afford another trip after that so they canceled my $200 coupon after a year. So, yeah, you get compensated, I guess

This is incredible. I’ve had 2 friends grow up with one of their parents suffering through MS. It is one of the cruelest diseases I’ve ever seen. Imagine eradicating it! I get bummed out nonstop… but, this is truly a giant step forward.

…isn’t the supposed goal of every generation to make things easier for the future ones? Trying to eradicate poverty so children dont have to go through awful childhood trauma? What is the problem here? It’s like old people bitching about “participation trophies” and “mental health days” etc… BITCH, you actually invented those practices; Better accomodations, more respect, better personal time, the right to even have an opinion…y’all actually worked to make these little things commonplace, but can’t appreciate it because someone isn’t thanking you personally on the reg…

I moved to contiguous USA (am from AK) when I was 18. I had never experienced allergies before, so was literally taking cold medicine a few times in the summer. I always assumed I was just coming down with something (summer colds weren’t that uncommon in my childhood, but that’s for me to reflect on), until I had scratched my nose open with a snotified face and a friend of mine said “…do you want a Claritin? I have one in my car…” Then I had an existential crisis realizing that I could suffer from plants that I didn’t stumble into or something to get myself an allergic reaction. Basically, once upon a time I thought seasonal allergies were for people that were just TOO sensitive to everything. womp womp

Nacho Libre is easily one of my favorite movies of all time, and I specifically avoided watching it because Jack Black was doing just terrible shit at the time. Now, my closest and oldest friends and I quote it at each other all these years later. I am truly sorry you didn’t like it!

@ettyblatant@lemmy.world avatar

Dude, Where’s My Car? - I don’t remember a thing about it (and would likely not hate it today) but I just remember being so… exhausted at the comedy used. I looked at my friend and asked if they’d be open to leaving and they were like “oh yes, let’s leave JFC”

ettyblatant ,
@ettyblatant@lemmy.world avatar

I agree wholeheartedly, but I guess my point is this: look at Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle v. Dude, Where’s My Car? and maybe the latter didn’t even put in the effort to even be slackercore? I honestly will likely watch this in the next week, and will likely have a great time, BUT, at the time I was 17 and my scruples were palpable

When : person A and person B are coworkers, or family, or otherwise established with each other. Person A asks me directly to do something. I have no reason not to, so I comply. Person B then comes up to me, IRATE, does not just ask me why I did such a thing, but lectures and belittles me and my judgment as well. Person A does not step up, and if I “throw person A under the bus” then person B doubles down on why I still shouldn’t be doing it.

This has happened to me since I was a child. I am now 37, and ultimately just don’t give a fuck if someone asks me to do anything weird unless it’s in fucking writing. I’m so pissed off even writing this AAAAAAAAAAAA FUCK YOU SHAUNA

Zoomers: how are Millenials hypocrites?

In my observation, a big part of social progress is each generation pointing out the hypocrisy of the previous. “All men are created equal” so how can you enslave black people? If men can vote, why can’t women? How come straight people can marry but gay people can’t? How is it fair to send an 18 year old to war but not...

Also, Vivek Ramaswamy has talked about raising the voting age to 25 unless you serve in the military. Which is in effort to keep young people (especially Swifties!) from voting Democrat.
