Flying the US flag upside down on ship is apparently a distress signal.

(Flying the UK flag upside down just makes people think you're an idiot.)

RobotToaster ,
@RobotToaster@mander.xyz avatar

Yes.

In the upper corner of the flag nearest the flagpole, the wider diagonal white stripe should be above the red diagonal stripe. If the red is above the wider white stripe the flag is upside-down.

Even our own government screws it up though https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2020/03/05/union-flag-has-flying-outside-parliament-upside/

20 years ago, no one owned a smart phone.

The handspring visor, one of the first smartphones, was released in 2000. I owned one, although later and second hand.

It still works too, except the phone part is 1g only, so there's no network for it any more.

Why are we still relying on manufacturers for software updates?

I know there's driver issues, but I'm pretty sure google could engineer android to at least allow direct security updates within the same android version. Google play services still provides updates for android 5. Even Yocto linux has opkg for updates.

What band or music group would you not have minded if they didn't have a certain band member? ( kbin.social )

My pick is Five Finger Death Punch and the obvious answer is Ivan Moody. The guy radiates that alpha-male wannabe energy and it definitely rings through all of the songs he has written and performed with this band. The guy is just a prick and a self-victimizing asshole....

It doesn't say what license they are going to use, so it may not be open source. The wording is very weaselly.

My understanding is Adderall isn't that much different to dexamphetamine?

RobotToaster ,
@RobotToaster@mander.xyz avatar

I think it's partly decompensation.

RobotToaster , (edited )
@RobotToaster@mander.xyz avatar

I'm prescribed it in the UK. Adderall is just a 3:1 mix of dexamphetamine and levoamphetamine.

One thing to be aware of, at least when I've tried it reports do not federate from Lemmy to kbin.

I'm on an instance federated with them, and subscribed to a couple of their comms, but their most popular politics boards are exactly what you'd expect from it being where r/chapoTrapHouse went.

I'm not a gamedev, but have you considered LGPL? My understanding is it allows the use of the library in proprietary software, but still requires improvements to the library itself to be released (although without the network requirement)

Asked last week if any of Kennedy’s health issues could compromise his fitness for the presidency, Stefanie Spear, a spokesperson for the Kennedy campaign, told the Times, “That is a hilarious suggestion, given the competition.”

That's hard to argue with tbh.

It looks like they do, yes https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wong_Wing_v._United_States

The fact that they bothered to pass a law at all could be argued to be a tacit admission that tiktok has constitutional rights, if it doesn't then you could just march in and confiscate it's servers, since it wouldn't have the right to due process.

In my head this argument is a little shaky, since it seems to be effectively arguing that Americans have the right to access foreign propoganda machines?

I don't see why that's shaky? There a plenty of books written by members of the CPC (Including Xi Jinping himself) on Amazon, in English, should Americans be banned from accessing that foreign propaganda?

Would Lemmy Benefit from Implementing Polls? ( slrpnk.net )

A popular way of dealing with discussions, and familiar to most people, I assume. As far as I see it, adding a poll system to Lemmy is a good way to enhance user engagement. I'm not really aware if this has been a topic before or not, tried looking it up but didn't see much juice on the topic, so thought I'd spark it up....

RobotToaster ,

One way encryption, same way passwords are stored.

RobotToaster ,
@RobotToaster@mander.xyz avatar

Open polls are one of the few good things about Facebook.

RobotToaster ,
@RobotToaster@mander.xyz avatar

Potentially, but any amount of obfuscation opens up the system to abuse.

If you trust the server hosting the community to handle all encryption, it's trivial for the admin to disable.

If you trust the server sending the vote, then it's trivial for a server admin to game the system and send hundreds of votes.

The hitperson is the only competent employee left at Boeing.

RobotToaster ,
@RobotToaster@mander.xyz avatar

“Hitperson” makes it sound like some HR-designated position, awkwardly titled in some neutral, milquetoast way as not to offend anyone.

That was intentional, I'm happy someone noticed.

Does color change how hot a laser can get something?

For convenience sake let's say you have 2 identical lasers, one is blue and one is red. And you shine it on lead (so none of the light leaks through) until the lead doesn't heat up anymore. Would the temperature change at all between the different color lasers. It doesn't have to be red or blue, it could be microwave or x ray,...

RobotToaster , (edited )

doesn’t have to be red or blue, it could be microwave or x ray

Technically those wouldn't be LASER (light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.) but MASER or XASER.

I'm probably the only asshole left that cares about this though.

Eh, most of those will just be scrapers, and fediverse inter-server communication is technically a bot.

The military isn't buying from Amazon, they buy from "xyz hardware supplies ltd", who buy from Amazon and charge three times the price to the military.

Some will be companies that specialise in sourcing obsolete hardware, who just buy shit off Amazon/eBay and issue the correct paperwork.

I've read that the US government has to give preference in contract bids to small businesses, veteran owned, woman owned, etc, businesses, which is great in theory, but it can create situations like this.

How do you build complex shapes? ( i.imgur.com )

I've made a large number of custom prints, and all of them were created using TinkerCad. It's an amazing toolkit, stupid easy to use but versatile. That is ... until something needs a tiny adjustment somewhere. That's when I feel it would've been neat to use parametric CAD instead....

RobotToaster ,
@RobotToaster@mander.xyz avatar

"Wedge shaped"? as in at an angle, or tapered?

If you want tapered then openSCAD has scaled extrusion or hulls. I think Fusion has similar tools.

The way I do this in TinkerCad is that I build the hollow first

Open SCAD calls that "difference", I think fusion calls it a cut.

If you're working in fusion you usually want to start with a 2d sketch and extrude it. You would make each holder as a component and then attach them later.
