I had the same on revanced, thought they found a new way to fight adblock.
Turns out if you clear the cache occasionally it goes away. The youtube app is a piece of trash.

I would switch, but I only use it for music and I haven't seen another frontend support mixes, which I rely on

Redjard ,

I cannot open that, it shows a login page. Could you post a screenshot of what this is supposed to contain?

Redjard ,

thx and wtf.
How can people even use android without adb shell?

Redjard ,

I guess adb backup was before my time. I did use adb to transfer my apps when I last restored a twrp backup. In perhaps a similar manner to what that did, going by the name. But I did use adb root for that.

Otherwise, I use it to set a lot of otherwise inaccessible settings, like making the back gesture a lot thinner than intended because my touchscreen can handle it, or forcing 120Hz everywhere. I can also set my dpi there without anoying apps.

And ofc I use it to uninstall system apps I don't need.

After initial setup I do all of that in a root bash session in termux admittedly, but if I hadn't rooted my device I would still want to do most of that using an adb shell, as most of it doesn't require root (besides maybe the restoring backups part).

I also use shell environment to semi-automatically transfer media files for certain processes, though I'll probably move that over to syncrhing at some point.

The main remaining advantage is the ability to automate things on my phone from my pc, I don't see a lot of those as replacable unless my rom installs kde connect as a system app and they add an immense amount of functionality

Shoutout to boost at this point for still not supporting spoilers btw. /s
@rmayayo if you needed a reason, observe

Redjard ,

And a grandmaster at that! Has such unpresidented talent ever been seen on this world?

Redjard ,

Shame they lost the display, that was the main benefit of the Xperia line for me.
Regular ~400 dpi screens look terrible and pixelated after being used to 650 dpi.

Guess I'll have to hope another high dpi phone with headphone jack releases before mine dies.

Redjard ,

Could you correct it for us mere mortals without in-depth aurora knowledge?

Redjard ,

The Google internet sure is pretty on Maps

Redjard ,

This really seemed like a good simplification until you threw in that d'Alembert operator at the end

Redjard ,

That can’t have been the reason, rather the fact it could tell.
Your browser sends information about its version and the os in the useragent string. It is supposed to lie and say it is a very commonly used useragent, specifically for purposes of fingerprinting. That would be windows, default configuration, firefox version something not you firefox version

Redjard ,

That would be a fail of the fingerprinting protection. A properly set up TOR browser for example should not allow that detection by any means. If you know how to detect it, please report it as a critical vulnerability.

I could think of maybe some edge case behavior in webrenderer or js cavas etc., which would mainly expose info on the specific browser and underlying hardware, but that is all of course blocked of or fixed in hardened browsers.

Further, if you have a reliable method, you could sell it off to for example Netflix, who are trying to block higher resolutions for Linux browsers but are currently foiled by changing the useragent (if you have widevine set up).

Redjard , (edited )

Default linux works too ofc, I didn’t know they took that route.
Most other browsers have very specific useragents, so the main pool of same useragents will be hardened browsers anyway.

Thank you for checking

edit:
github.com/…/0001-Set-Tor-Messenger-preferences.p… would indicate it should be Windows, Ill check later.
Try it with high security settings in tor, it might be something like canvas. Did you enable any permissions for the website?

Redjard ,

I was joking about everyone sending the alt text in a slightly different style. Hence also “alttext”

Redjard ,

All oleds do it at lower brightnesses. They can’t dim very far, so they need to flicker to get a usable color-depth

Redjard ,

you can physically wire A into C, it’s the same protocol. This won’t be broken like other adapters because neither device even knows about it

Redjard ,

I would not say that necessarily. I asked the Gentoo people and they had similar setups with 12h. At 4GB ram it’ll mainly come down to swapping, so disk speed.
If the 5 days were you experience, was it using a slow hdd?
Edit: remember to disable pgo, wherever you see it. It can double your compile times

Redjard ,

For reference my modern system sits well below 20 minutes without pgo, and below 40 with.

Redjard ,

The missing number is drive speed, because 4GB ram are not nearly enough, swapping is necessary. But with fast moder drives (were pcie ssds a thing back then?) expect half a day

Redjard ,

I built it 6 months ago on a 3700x, took 3h. Where firefox took 20 minutes

Redjard ,

ssds are a really cheap upgrade, and have been for a while. My systems of similsr age have had ssd upgrades for about 5 years now. It’ll likely be limited to sata speeds though.

Android phone saving metadata for screenshots ( i.ibb.co )

I always remove this data from my screenshots before sharing, but is there any way to prevent this from happening in the first place? I’ve searched and searched, but all I can find is information about how to remove the data after the fact, which I already know how to do, but it would sure be nice if it never got added in the...

Redjard ,

On lineageOS 20 it records the exact android build string as the Software for me, so “Android lineage_pdx215-userdebug 13 TQ3A.230901.001 b30079afa2”. Which is probably enough to uniquely identify me, and you if you have a less common phone or are on an older or uncommon version.

Needless to say I am pissed.

[solved] Can't install KDE Initiary? ( lemmy.world )

Hiya, I’m trying to install KDE Initiary as I’ll be travelling soon. Heard this was a good travel planner on the Late Night Linux Podcast, however when I try to install the app I get the message as seen in the picture. Anyone got any idea of how I could this to work?...

Redjard ,

I’ve had similar problems with kde apps on fdroid. I think they are rebuilding very often and that somehow gives a decent chance they are chaning the file you are downloading. So the store is correctly identifying the apk is not matching the info of the repo, because the repo is outdated compared to the file.
I suspect droidify had outdated repo info while fdroid did not. A refresh would have probably made it work on droidify too.

Redjard ,

What is the actual plan?

Navalny:

I like the idea of anti-Putin voters going to the polling stations together at 12 noon, at noon against Putin.

Well, what can they do? Will they close the polling stations at 12 noon? Will they organize an action in support of Putin at 10 a.m.? Will they register everyone who came at noon and put them on the list of unreliable people?

It had long been clear the election would be neither free nor fair: Putin would be the only real candidate standing, with all his prominent critics either dead, imprisoned, in exile or struck off the ballot. But by simply showing up at the appointed hour, Russians could voice their disapproval and expose the vote — intended by the Kremlin to deliver the ultimate acclamation of Putin after his assault on Ukraine — as bogus.

How can I upload books (to libgen, et al) without a trace back to me?

I know Calibre can remove DRM, but it seems that Calibre does not remove things like watermarks, references to the buyer by name, etc. Now maybe I can try to find those manually, but that is an error prone process. Plus, what if they embed a unique digital signature that ties back to me? I understand that this is a very uncommon...

Redjard ,

Even with OCR, couldn’t your copy at least in theory be laced with strategically placed minor word changes? Say throughout the book you pick 30 spots to change a word without changing the meaning of the text, or you introduce a typo. If every copy gets a different set of those that would be a unique identifier.
I think I have heard that being done with imperceptable changes in films sent for showings in theaters.

In essence, if that where possible someone could build an api and donate his ID into it that answers all the authentication requests for everyone. There needs to be a way to ensure different users use different IDs, which necessitates a bunch of tracking.

And that in the ideal case

Redjard ,

To be able to catch that, you need tracking. Some identifier to determine if you had 1000 authentications from the same source or different ones.

Redjard ,

It’s a user input device, that in an electric circuit can allow power to either pass through it or not.

Redjard ,

In boost I have a list of all my uploaded pictures, where I can delete them.

Redjard ,

Yes, the deletion would have to be federated, there is no way to guarantee anything at that point. But as I understand OP this is about acting quickly, on an upload that isn’t even part of a post yet.

If I doxx myself on any service, someone can take a screenshot, it could be archived. But If I delete it before anyone sees it, there is a good chance it will never get out, if the primary platform properly removes it.

Redjard ,

With federation it’s kinda like complaining archive.org doesn’t have a good way to purge page snapshots in case you post something on your website you regret later. Or search engine caches. Or the local scammers replicating your page with curl for a phishing scam.

Redjard ,

There are tvs that wait a month before giving you a big manually dismissed popup about not being connected to the internet.

Been paying a bunch on my rooted custom a13 rom in the past 2 months. 1 single magisk module (Play Integrity Fix by chiteroman) was all it took, simpler than it has been in a long time. I have full safetynet or 2/3 play integrity reliably, which to my understanding is all google can reasonably enforce on modern devices and android versions for a while to come.

So with sadness I must say I can’t use google pay at all … cause they killed it. But google wallet (formerly google pay, formerly android pay, formerly google wallet, formerly google checkout), works just fine

Redjard ,

Indeed. I have found an article which I hope I can simply keep bookmarked to make it a simple task following whatever the next method may be.

But I have also found things calm down considerably over time, google seems to concentrate their resources on recent android versions. Once a15 or a16 are out for a bit, I probably won’t even have to update the module anymore.

All my older rooted phones have access to everything, even after years of not caring at all.

Redjard , (edited )

You can use Simple Play Integrity Checker on IzzyOnDroid (fdroid repo) or the play store. It also checks safetynet.
If gpaywallet works that would indicate 2/3 play integrity if your android is recent I think, so it might be unrelated to the api. 3/3 isn’t enforceable yet afaik, too many legitimate devices can’t pass it.

Apps can still bring their own root checks, but magiskhide should allow you to pass those.
Unless the app is quite nasty and checks for the mere presence of apps that don’t do much without root or xposed, in which case there are also modules that allow you to limit what apps other apps can see being installed (really seeing installed apps should be a permission, but sadly it isn’t on most roms yet)

What's a good phone now that doesn't force ads on me?

I’m using a Pixel 6 Pro right now, and I’m looking around to see if there are any good phones. However, I have heard that there are ads in the newer flagship phones (Samsung, Xiaomi). I am willing to spend around USD$750 on a new phone, but I just don’t want any crazy ads or preinstalled apps like Facebook. Are there...

Redjard ,

How about phones sold preinstalled with a custom rom?

Redjard ,

It outright prevents any legislation mandating backdoors, on a level harder to change than even a constitution.
