Koalawalla Woods

Hi folks! After a number of months of pondering this and having a recent incident happen a few days ago where I couldn’t find another koala community, I had decided to go ahead and make a koala community on Lemmy. Since I’m already getting a lot of people checking it out, it seems Lemmy may have been in a dire need for this...

You may be offered a free premium Telegram subscription – but please don’t accept ( archive.is )

Telegram is giving away FREE Premium subscriptions! All they need from you is to use your cell phone as a relay to text out their OTP codes! And the recipient of the OTP sees your phone number! What could POSSIBLY go wrong with this deal?...

Matrix still doesn’t have a multi account client with threads.

I don’t mind Matrix, but every time I bring this up to a hard core Matrix defender to how the clients are lacking, they don’t have much to counter.

IRC v3 anyone?

Blaze ,

Fluffychat doesn’t support threads at the moment

Threading doesn’t tend to work the same way tho.

Indeed

Nice list!

My theory is that if we start with an up-to-date list, we can crowdsource updates without too much trouble. In theory?

One way to do this could be to have a GitHub repo where the list is hosted. That way if someone wants to update it, they create a pull request that can be accepted by the moderating team

Seems interesting, but where is the link?

I just found an old post from reddit of a guy who suggested people to come here in another post saying he was wrong about lemmy and the lemmy devs are bad ?

I have a lemmy.ml account and i didn’t know that they were bad . I created this account after seeing that post .( I am not into politics as you can see if you visited the account i have put in my bio ) so is that true ?...

Interesting, what would be the alternative? Technology, culture, religion, military? Taking those options out of Civ

Fosdem 2024 Schedule Streaming - anyone currently there? ( fosdem.org )

FOSDEM is a free event for software developers to meet, share ideas and collaborate. Every year, thousands of developers of free and open source software from all over the world gather at the event in Brussels. You don’t need to register. Just turn up and join in!

Nice that you enjoyed it!

Good question. They have a Youtube channel, but don’t seem to use it that much: www.youtube.com/@fosdemtalks/videos

Blaze OP ,
@Blaze@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Also they have a Matrix room, you can maybe ask there: matrix.to/#/:fosdem.org

Wait, there were Lemmy stickers?

Nice meme.

However, couldn’t also Eärendil be considered?

Edit: found another possibility:

Legolas is the geographically-closest “elf-prince” to Erebor, where the coat was found. But it’s made of mithril, and that can’t be found in Erebor.

So it was probably forged in Moria. The mithril was definitely mined there. We don’t know exactly when, but we know Moria bordered not one, but two elf-kingdoms (Lorien and Eregion).

Elrond was Gil-galad’s right hand elf, and probably could have claimed the title of high king after the Last Alliance, although he didn’t. He also lived in Eregion for a while, and met his wife in Lorien. He had two sons, both born well before Moria fell to the balrog.

Conclusion: it was forged either for Elladan or Elrohir. They wore it, outgrew it, and gave it back to Durin’s folk, who then brought it with them into exile.

Well, to be fair this community is much more active than !tolkien.

Thank you for your contributions, by the way!

Blaze ,
@Blaze@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I appreciate the effort, but what is happening is option 1, aka merging of communities, naturally.

About knowing where to post, you can usually have a look at lemmyverse.net/communities, search the community name, and have a good idea of which one is the most active.

Sometimes different communities can coexist, and that’s fine. !science and !science have different audiences, and that’s okay.

Blaze ,
@Blaze@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

That seems promising

Blaze ,
@Blaze@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

In this case, it’s the first, which is obvious based on the number of subscribers and active users. You don’t even need a third party tool, it’s literally in the sidebar

Blaze ,
@Blaze@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Do you have an example? Because all the evidence shows that people want to be seen when they post, and will naturally gravitate towards the most active communities, except if they are against the instance the most active community is.

Blaze ,
@Blaze@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

There isn’t one “most active one” because federation isn’t perfect and every instance sees a different number of users/posts.

Number of users is pretty similar in my experience, with an average difference between 2 and 10 users.

Blaze ,
@Blaze@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

What would help is that people stopped trying to find a “canonical place” to put content and just went on to put content without much worry. I have been basically posting on !humanscale by myself. Would it be nice if more people posted? Yes. Do you think I will just give up because it’s been six months and no one else cared to post there? Of course not.

Today I learned about this community, seems interesting

Blaze ,
@Blaze@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I do think it would be nice if there was a way for community mods to choose to combine two communities across instances,

If they are willing to cooperate that far, they could as well merge the communities

Blaze ,
@Blaze@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I’m in plenty of communities where there are lots of low value posts that would normally be consolidated into a single stickied post for the community but there isn’t a large enough userbase to make a stickied post worthwhile despite there being multiple communities for that topic.

Any examples of those? What prevents those communities from merging?

Blaze ,
@Blaze@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Sure unless your instance is defederated, we need more ways to control the content without relying on defederation

Hopefully defederation will happen less and less with 19.X allowing users to block instances themselves

Blaze ,
@Blaze@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

.ml is okay to discuss Linux, the overlap between the two communities makes sense

Blaze ,
@Blaze@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

The PDev version is better anyway.

I have a few communities that are still on .ml, I forgot you guys were defederated, maybe I should move them elsewhere

Blaze ,
@Blaze@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I meant hardcore leftists
