We should stop putting anything about MTG in the limelight.

So you just need 3 4090's with 1 displayport each to the monitor and a whole new version of sli.

I vaguely remember that being a thing for early commercial 8k projectors, but I don't know anything about the implementation.

Any idea what happened to the second strawberry pot? ( lemmy.world )

Both pots were started at the same time from the same batch of strawberry starts. They should have the same soil box. Both grew vigorously last spring/summer and got visited by deer in the fall. Both bounced back pretty well before winter set in. The left pot is very happy, the right... Not so much. I do recall the big pot...

Fermion ,

Do you see any stems with missing leaves? The main difference I see is the netting on the metal pot. So maybe there's some grazing pressure?

There's so many people paranoid about the remote possibility of dirty bombs. Meanwhile, Norfolk Southern is actually spilling tankers full of toxic chemicals that get set on fire by being incredibly negligent.

If terrorists did want to poison an area, there's plenty of insanely toxic and commercially available compounds to choose from. The fixation on nuclear fuel is an indicator of someone who is just repeating a ghost story and doesn't actually know/care what the biggest sources of danger are.

Harvard is a $50 Billion endowment fund that happens to run a school. So Harvard divesting from Israel affiliated investments is potentially significant.

If an upvote is an "I like this" button, then it's bad UX design to expect people to not use the downvote as an "I don't like this button." If there needs to be an "off topic" button then it shouldn't be styled and placed to look like the exact opposite of the "I like this" button.

Frozen food is processed way closer to where it's grown as opposed to the produce that might be shipped across hemispheres before you get it. So frozen stuff tends to be more consistent in quality.

These images are generated from processing many out of focus images while scanning across the area. They use the differences between the out of focus images to compute what must have caused those differences.

So this technique is pretty far from being able to capture real time events as it requires capturing hundreds of images to produce a single computed image. The paper talks about how thermal motion of the nuclei is what now dominates the limits of resolution for this method.

There are other ultrafast imaging techniques that can capture essentially real-time chemical reactions, but I believe those don't come close to this spatial resolution.

Maybe they finally learned from the fiasco of the rural broadband subsidies.

That would be great if we could get most governments to pass the same rule. If adversarial governments aren't restricted by the same rules then it tips the power balance in a way that favors foreign warhawks.

Why do they even bother charging the patient at all if the vast majority of funding is coming from the national system?

Even just getting above the boiling temp of liquid nitrogen is a really big deal. Liquid helium is something we will eventually run out of and is largely dependent on fossil fuel extraction to be collected. Helium can't be recaptured after it escapes an open loop cooling system.

LN2 is so much cheaper to run and it's sustainable. We'll never run out of Nitrogen so long as there's power to cool it. LN2 is cheaper than craft beer.

The portrayal of sexism that Samantha Carter and other female military members face is actually an overall positive part of the shows writing. They highlight how problematic it is and Dr. Samantha Carter continues to rise through the ranks as her accomplishments are recognized by the good leadership that she serves with. She is far from a token character and she provides some of the most significant contributions to the team.

So that issue you have does get better. I would argue that the writing overall is rather progressive for the time.

Feel free to not like the show though. It can be a bit hokey. Not everyone enjoys cheesy sci-fi.

Zz and snake plants are also very forgiving and would do well in the light conditions you describe. Snake plants grow as straight upright blades. Zz plants grow in more of fanning structure.

A mix of pathos and zz plants could be pretty nice having both semi upright and trailing foliage but could look a little on the messy side.

You could try separating the leafy part from the stem. Cook the stem with everything else but don't throw the leafy part in until the very end when you've turned off the heat. The residual heat from everything else should be enough to wilt the greens.

The threat of lawsuit is usually enough to get an employment offer rescinded. It’s rare for a company to want to take on a legal defense just to hire someone new. Even though they weren’t actually legally binding, non-competes still limited options for a lot of people.

Overall I agree with you that this isn’t as big of a deal as people make it sound, but it’s easy underestimate their influence if only looking at the result of cases that go to trial. In many situations, the damage is done well before a case can go to trial.

The speed of sound in seawater is around 1500m/s or 5400 km/hr. Something tells me they won’t actually be going supersonic.

The article shouldn’t be referencing the speed of sound without specifying the medium for the sound waves and conditions such as temperature for water or temperature and pressure for air.

Also, the supercavitation would be incredibly noisy underwater, and at those speeds the vessel itself would produce a very loud pressure wave that would be easy to detect. So its advantage wouldn’t be in avoiding detection, it would be in moving fast enough that detection doesn’t matter because no torpedo could intercept them.

Red Lobster eyes bankruptcy option after $11M in losses from endless shrimp ( abcnews.go.com )

“Last year, Red Lobster reported $11 million in operating losses following its flubbed ‘Ultimate Endless Shrimp’ deal, which backfired when it reeled in too many customers after the limited-time promo became a permanent menu fixture last June. The restaurant chain later reported $12.5 million in losses in the fourth...

For me it’s driving while under the influence. If you couldn’t tell, I like me some ganja. I bet you could find a professor near you that would let you attend office hours and ask whatever questions you have.

Fermion ,

Don’t overthink it. Look up faculty and try to find one that teaches introductory courses. Send them an email stating something along the lines that you’re a non student looking to learn a little more than high school introductory terms. Ask if there’s a lecture you could audit or a time like office hours where you could ask questions. A bunch of professors would probably be willing to talk to a flat earther if they were approached on a polite and courteous manner.

If your interest can’t be satisfied with a question session, you could look into whether a local university has an option for non-degree students to enroll in classes. That’s an option that’s frequently not advertised but is pretty common (at least in the US.)

Leather that is kept dry is very resistant to rot, leather that is allowed to stay wet is not.

How Would You Handle Students Cheating?

I gave my students a take home exam over spring break. (This is normal where I teach) One of the questions was particulary difficult. It came down to a factor of three in the solution. That factor inexplicably appeared with no justification on many of their exams. I intend to have the students I suspect of cheating come to my...

Hold an in class quiz with essentially the same problem but with different values. The students that actually worked through the problem should be able to do it again with the changes. Those who didn’t understand and just put down what their peers got will struggle with a quiz. Bonus points if you can restructure the problem in a way to elucidate which specific aspects you think the students were skipping over with help from their peers. Feel free to have specific requirements assigned point values in the problem statement.

Don’t call them into your office and put them on the spot. That will make this adversarial. Your job is to teach them how to solve problems and communicate their methods in a clear fashion. You should reevaluate your problem writing and grading policies if just looking up answers can earn a passing grade. If you give a quiz, be up front with them that you have concerns about some students skipping the work and copying answers. Reiterate that the point of the exam was to make sure they can solve problems, the correct answer is merely a byproduct.

I will add speculation that there is a difference between what your students think you expect from an answer and what your expectations actually are. Mismatches in expectations are immensely frustrating for both parties. So don’t leave your students guessing. Give them specific examples of work of different quality and what aspects earn full points and what things might lead to point deductions. Some of the best professors I had would publish all the prior year exams with their solutions. That gave everyone the opportunity to mimic the workflow and match the level of detail expected. That also elliminates the concern of students finding the answers online or from prior year students for exams as the teacher will have had to avoid reused questions entirely.

It’s definitely not a complete nor perfect solution, but I’ve noticed that a number of accounts disproportionately post very negative news links. I’ve started blocking some of those users. It helps break it up a bit. I’m sure I’m missing some news now, but there’s only so many times I can see posts about the world burning up or genocide before browsing lemmy becomes stressful and nihilistic.

So if I see the same negative news story on multiple communities, I’ll click on the user and if they’re blasting negative stories everywhere I just block them. For example, I just blocked [email protected], not because of any harassment or anything, it’s just that they almost exclusively post political and climate doomsday stuff.

Not at all. I’ve shoveled snow once in the last five years and didn’t enjoy it one bit.

I grew up in WI and have had enough of winters for a lifetime.

I had a lot of professors who put most of the grade weight on large projects. It made for a very heavy workload, but projects/ papers give a much better picture of how capable someone is of not only reciting knowledge, but also applying it.

I rented a Nissan that would scream at you for deviating from a lane. I couldn’t turn it off fast enough. Driving on a small winding road was constant false positives. Even on the highways, faded and repainted lines was throwing false positives. It was more of a distraction than a help. When driving in an unfamiliar city I didn’t need the car distracting me with its disfunction.

Turning it off was buried deep in a menu that was not convenient to find. There would be no way to quickly or safely toggle it on and off as conditions vary.

Rada makes some pretty decent metal spatulas if you want specific recommendations.

The blade part is way thinner than plastic spatulas. Now that I’m used to the stainless steel ones, I feel clumsy and inept when I have to use someone else’s nylon spatula.
