If you're actually asking how to reach people about a delusional belief they hold it seems often if you try to show them evidence that directly contradicts their belief, argue reasonably, etc they will often become more entrenched in a defiant 'you can't teach me anything' stance to protect their perceived self identity from unwarranted attacks. You have to demonstrate the warrant first.

A possibly more effective method seems to be temporarily accepting their proposed perspective, and asking skeptical questions to reduce their confidence in the delusion. Providing the questions to work it out themselves instead of forcing the conclusion. I haven't read it yet but I've seen
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combating_Cult_Mind_Control recommended as a study on cults and breaking their indoctrination & control tactics but I'm open to more contemporary recommendations if anyone has them.

Published by Elsevier their parent company 2023 financials: https://www.relx.com/~/media/Files/R/RELX-Group/documents/reports/annual-reports/2023-ar-sections/relx-2023-financial-review.pdf nothing noted as funding research or science that I can see, it would probably eat into their 33% profit margins or 800m stock buybacks.

Yes, it seems right now the only thing holding back that change is researchers treating paid journals as prestigious and adding clout to their name and publishings, and lacking a system to engage in peer review outside of journals and conferences. ArXiv is basically halfway there to registering users and publishing, they just need features for registering as a peer review, engaging for a review, and judging as acceptable or not. Most of that could be covered by votes and comments like Lemmy but limited to an accredited community of peer researchers.

Edit: to be clear not all researchers, some reject paid journals just not enough to change behavior in the general field/branch yet

Yes, if you consider more than one issue (X, Y, Z) when deciding who or who not to vote for you are a multi issue voter, if you only consider a single issue (X) when deciding who or who not to vote for, you are a single issue voter. It's not per candidate, it's per vote.

Didn't read the article, did Nintendo pay to develop this to be able to preserve the games history and release them for free so they can get some new fans for these retro games and IPs to maybe encourage them to buy some newer released games in the same series?

Maybe it was written that way to make you read faster as you get toward the end to convey a sense of facetiousness because I didn't need to read the article to know none of that's true, who knows. I'm probably just spending too much time online lately.

BOM U+FEFF is another fun one, most editors won't show it but it can cause errors like when I found one in a SQL script that was combined from existing utf-8 files together with cat. You'll see it in a hex editor or in notepad I think it just made the rest of the line italic.

If Reddit had a soul/conscience, I think it was us, and we're all on Lemmy now...

As a little background, I didn't actively use Reddit for months following the blackout. I still barely stop in over there and if I do I'm never logged in our contributing to the communities there (where I was previously a daily poster/commenter)....

I think there's also a general age demographic shift down as the mods and people who care about moderation, third party apps, bots, etc left. Something similar happened during the digg exodus where social norms and consensus around some topics changed, just not at much with the bots at the time. People who remain may not care, or they just may be unaware. There was always some propaganda blindness too in the 'i don't use social media just reddit' crowd.

White phosphorus is incredibly easy to obtain in small volumes (if you have a matchbook you already have some red phosphorus), and in larger volumes it's found in some pretty common minerals. Unfortunately the possible damage done or weapons use of a material isn't always reflected in how difficult it is to obtain. According to the ACS 900,000 tons are produced annually & mostly used in fertilizer and pesticide.

Any streaming service that tries to combine ads+sub is just as greedy as cable TV and I can't support that kind of shitty business practice. Ads free or sub no ads. Cancelled each service as they rolled out that trash. Currently only subbed to Criterion and thinking of resubbing to Shudder.

How come liberals dont hate conservatives the way conservatives hate liberals

I constantly see angry mobs of people decrying "woke", "critical race theory", ""grooming"", and whatever other nonsense they made up this week. They march around with guns, constantly appending lib as a prefix to any word they can use to denigrate. They actively plot violence and spew hatred in the open....

whotookkarl ,
@whotookkarl@lemmy.world avatar

Hate requires you to consider them first competent with shared common values that inform their beliefs and actions. Otherwise it's mostly pity and disgust that they have no values other than authority and loyalty like a criminal enterprise, and usually can't tell if they are being evil on purpose or by accident/inaction/ignorance.

Not scary for the auto workers who want to work on them, build them, supply parts for them, etc or the families who want affordable EVs. More scary for the wealth class who didn't reinvest enough into updating their facilities and processes to stay competitive businesses. The government already gave them extra time with the embargo but that isn't going to last forever.

Within minutes of the assault on the building, Columbia University officials said they had no choice but to request police intervention.

"We regret that protesters have chosen to escalate the situation through their actions,"

The Columbia administration forgetting they have nothing without the students. One person gets yelled at and they clutch their pearls and call the bastards in to beat and arrest peaceful protesters. They are escalating things, not the students.

Students asking to expunge arrests related to these protests should be putting on their resume they are willing to stand up for their rights and the rights of others without a voice. The university and cops are the ones who should be embarrassed and ashamed.

Yes, prohibitions of addictive substances creates dangerous black markets and criminals out of addicts who usually need medical support not a judge or jail. We try to prevent children from driving, drinking, smoking, etc for the same reason we don't send children to jail & that's not a good way to legislate adult or general populations.
