How big is that backlog?

Mine crossed 1500 recently 😅

lazycouchpotato ,
@lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah I collect all the free games that Epic gives out, plus other random freebies and game bundles.

Will I go through all 1500 in my lifetime? Absolutely not.

Which game(s) are you currently playing?

It is still just Beta 2, but it is disappointing to see Android 15 not get any acknowledgement at all on stage at I/O.

Pixel by any chance?

I run into this bug every other day on my Pixel 6a. Also causes "swipe down on pill to use one-handed mode" to break. Have to reboot every time to fix it.

Audio has been pre-generated.

Not a great example after yesterday's GPT-4o announcement which appeared to be live.

Did they demo new Google Glasses :O

lazycouchpotato ,

Ok I'm done watching the stream. Boring as hell.

Thank you for all the updates! Looking forward to tomorrow's Android announcements.

I've been loyal to Sync. Few quirks that need to be resolved like support for Lemmy spoilers, but other than that it's been fantastic.

To me they are social media.

You can also follow topics/communities on other platforms, and on Reddit you can follow people/accounts.

There's not much difference.

Gift article I found online.

The part that interests me is this:

Jill Braff, head of ZeniMax studios, said in the town hall that she hoped the reorganization would allow the division, which also develops Fallout and Doom, to put more focus on fewer projects. “It’s hard to support nine studios all across the world with a lean central team with an ever-growing plate of things to do,”

Why gobble up so many studios to consolidate into a gaming megacorp, then get gobbled up yourself by Microsoft? What's the purpose of acquiring so many studios and holding onto so much IP if you can't handle them?

@lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world avatar

“We think there is a fundamental misconception about piracy. Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem,”

“If a pirate offers a product anywhere in the world, 24 x 7, purchasable from the convenience of your personal computer, and the legal provider says the product is region-locked, will come to your country 3 months after the US release, and can only be purchased at a brick and mortar store, then the pirate’s service is more valuable.”

Things I like:

  • Brighter screen and now upto 120 Hz
  • 256 GB option, weirdly for the obsidian color only. Aloe and bay are nicer! (Also annoying how Google phones don't have microSD card slots because they offer Google Drive. smh this company)
  • Will get Gemini Nano for on-device AI
  • 7 years of OS updates

Rest is pretty much the same.

Google Store, Amazon and Best Buy are offering a $100 gift card for pre-ordering. Best Buy and Google Store are accepting trade-ins - you'll have to compare to see which one is offering the most value for your phone. Best Buy gift card will be more useful than a Google Store gift card though.

If you can wait half a year or so, it should drop to about $375 like the previous A phones have, making it a solid bang for your buck.

lazycouchpotato OP ,
@lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world avatar

MKBHD says to get the 8 over the 8a but I disagree. The improvements are marginal. Unless you really need wireless power sharing, the 8a offers pretty much everything the 8 does if slightly slower.

Best Buy gift card + trade-in or waiting till a price drop make it more enticing than paying $500 for the Pixel 8.

I'm plenty happy with my 6a so I'm going to hold onto it.

lazycouchpotato OP ,
@lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world avatar

Interesting. Did a reviewer mention this or were you able to try the device yourself?

I'm one of the few who has had zero issues with the 6a fingerprint sensor. Sure it's a little slower but it works accurately for me.

lazycouchpotato OP ,
@lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world avatar

It can and most likely will. Why MKBHD did not consider that puzzles me.

Google Fit dev APIs shutdown set for June 2025 ( 9to5google.com )

Google’s migration guide for developers lists what they’re supposed to switch to on Android phones and Wear OS. However, there is no replacement for the Goals API that lets Google Fit users set “how many steps and heart points they want to aim for each day.”

Would've appreciated it yesterday when I went grocery shopping.

Noticed a few weeks ago they raised prices by 40-50 cents on certain items, then "discount" them by 10-25 cents to make them seem cheaper.

I have a list on my notes app with prices per pound/oz. You can't fool me, Aldi.

In case anyone finds this comment, the last time I checked it out I was able to get free tickets. You gotta find the person working there holding a QR code. Scan the code and it auto-adds some coupon code to your booking, making the tickets free.

Java is quite popular online due to all the mods and the videos people upload to YouTube using those mods, but I believe in terms of number of users, Bedrock outscores it quite a bit. The barrier to entry is lower – $7 on iOS/Android and most people have phones.

lazycouchpotato ,
@lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve been using SecureTether play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.panjava… to get around it. Requires a bit of setup but works without issues after.

I dont believe something like this is possible on iOS.

lazycouchpotato ,
@lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world avatar

:(

I bought the V2 suite of their apps at release to support the company because I’m tired of perpetual subscription software. I’m not expecting lifetime updates or support, I just want whatever I paid for to work reasonably without hassles.

lazycouchpotato ,
@lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world avatar

The easiest way I’ve found without root or ADB is to use Solid Explorer. Well worth the cost.

I select the APK I want and copy it to a different directory. Extremely painless.

That’s pretty clever. I bought 3 for my family living in the same house…

Aside from the Nexus One, Google phones have not had micro SD card slots. It’s crazy how one part of the company (Google Drive) can influence the other (Nexus/Pixel).

Then again, Samsung makes micro SD cards and gutted the slot from their S series too…

I had the 8 GB Nexus 4 and it was annoying to have to clear cache from apps ever so often.

lazycouchpotato ,
@lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world avatar

It’s pretty good but it works with a limited database stored on your phone.

With Google Assistant’s music recognition you get to access a larger database stored on their servers.

lazycouchpotato ,
@lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world avatar

I used to think the same, until it happened to me twice…

I got playful groans both times for being the only person in a class group with an Android. I have an iPad so it ended up being a non-issue.

Heck, I was talking to a guy with a Pixel 7 who said the woman he was dating thought it was a red flag. She’s 28.

I’m not saying it should exist, but stuff like this very much affects people whether we like it or not and pretending like it’s a non-issue doesn’t help them.

lazycouchpotato ,
@lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t think it’s an Android feature. It shows up on desktop as well.

lazycouchpotato ,
@lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world avatar

Ease of use.

With your one Discord account you join all the servers you care about and interact with online/IRL friends.

There are downsides that people at Lemmy will find dealbreaking and I absolutely agree with them, but the convenience of it being a chat, forum (almost), voice/video calling and gaming platform for free with (currently) no ads triumphs all of that for the majority of people, and that’s what makes it popular. It’s also cross-platform so no one’s left out.

lazycouchpotato ,
@lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world avatar

I miss my Nexus 4 :( Loved everything about it.

Took it to the beach like an idiot and killed it.

I had the 8 GB version and it was madness. I would have to keep clearing cache from apps every week. Rooting it and installing custom ROMs on it was fun.

Before that, my dad had the Nexus One. It was kinda slow.

@lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world avatar

We had guests over, and they made homemade perogies.

They were great.

Haven’t felt the need to use them as often. Emojis and “lol haha” work fine for me.

Ah I wasn’t aware which script it was. It’s just one of the emoticons available in Sync for Lemmy.

Here’s the thing – I really like Google’s products. For the most part they make good stuff. Google Search at one point was great. YouTube for all its faults is an invaluable resource. Maps is critical to me for navigating and determining traffic on the way to somewhere. Android (when Google isn’t busy locking it down) is extremely powerful. I loved my Nexus 4 and love my Pixel 6a. The Android/Pixel-exclusive features are great party tricks and conversation starters – Call Screen, Now Playing, Emoji Kitchen on GBoard, etc. Chromecast is super handy.

In the end though, they’re an ad company, and to them I’m nothing but commodity. Every interaction or thought of mine is a resource for them to monetize and abuse, and that’s not something I am comfortable with.

I also do not want my entire life tied to a Google account. If anything ever happens to it, I don’t want to get locked out of everything.

I haven’t deGoogled completely. Going through the process slowly. For the services I’m still using, I have search history, location history, watch history, etc. disabled.

For apps:

  • Chrome has been replaced with Firefox.
  • Gmail app with Spark, but I’m in the process of moving away from Spark to K9 Mail (soon to be Thunderbird)
  • Google Authenticator with Authy
  • YouTube with NewPipe
  • Google Keep with Standard Notes
  • Google Photos with Simple Gallery (may have to look for a replacement soon since it was sold to a sketchy buyer)

Google Search was replaced with DuckDuckGo and Kagi. Gmail with a custom domain and Mailbox.org for hosting. I have a Nest Mini speaker with its mic turned off used exclusively for casting music.

I’m still using the Play Store because of paid apps, but if there’s a FOSS app I need, I get it from F-Droid.

The one service I’ve actually gone back to Google on is GBoard. Emoji Kitchen is far too good for me to give up right now.

I’m still using stock Android because of the Pixel-exclusive features. I’ll maybe experiment with GrapheneOS in the future.

lazycouchpotato ,
@lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world avatar

Looks good!

From the screenshots I saw, it doesn’t appear to have the editing capabilities of Simple Gallery. That was a huge plus - especially for video.

lazycouchpotato ,
@lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world avatar

Unfortunately, yeah.

It has been forked, thankfully, under the name of Fossify. Following the project for updates.

lazycouchpotato ,

Gonna give it a look. Appreciate the recommendation!
