Wow! I didn’t know they were casts. I thought we found the remains as presented.

henfredemars ,

It may not be malice. Incompetence.

henfredemars ,

By not understanding how version control works. I've worked at places that had a surprising number of developers who would just merge things in ways that drop code from other developers.

henfredemars ,

It’s crap. VPN login almost never works, and I have to disable my ad blocker and tracking protection to succeed.

It’s ridiculous. What, are you going to start requiring cash payments for successful login? It’s garbage. I strongly advise avoiding the use of Reddit wherever possible due to the obvious malicious intent.

They want to harvest as much data as they can and would rather you use the app, which is also garbage, meanwhile the chains continue to tighten around users who don’t leave.

henfredemars ,

Why does this option without specifying a number of threads even exist? It might as well be footgun mode.

henfredemars ,

My man pages specify it’s as many as possible limited only to the number of jobs.

Just because a thing is common doesn’t make it correct, or even harmless. It just makes it common.

Our legal system is not based on religious belief, and it’s a reflection of poor judgment to quote meaningless and legally-irrelevant texts.

Would you respect a judge that quotes Harry Potter in official documents on a regular basis? It’s unprofessional, and it suggests a poor decision-making process which produces the actual harm.

henfredemars ,

Good points.

henfredemars ,

Management has layers. It’s complicated.

henfredemars ,

It can be done. I am autistic, and I’m usually able to fake it well enough to get hired by somebody. Then I try to optimize in ways that reduce the amount of effort I put in to the image.

henfredemars ,

I’m an “ethical” vegan.

Looks good to me!

henfredemars ,

Sauce? Interested.

Important quote for readers:

Once the Guardia Civil obtained the iCloud email address, the documents show that it requested information from Apple, which in turn provided a full name, two home addresses and a linked Gmail account.

I have mixed feelings about this. This doesn’t sound to me like the actual iCloud data but rather it’s metadata for an account the police know already exists. It’s certainly not great, but it could be worse.

I see it as the other way around. People are going to keep their phones for longer whether or not they fix the security issues that emerge. It’s better to fix the issues, to improve user perception and user experience.

Smart phones are on increasingly longer replacement cycles before the announcement. Perhaps they see the writing on the wall.

henfredemars ,

Attempts have been made to improve battery longevity in software, but at the end of the day battery chemistry sets the rules.

Netflix Windows app is set to remove its downloads feature, while introducing ads ( www.techradar.com )

Netflix has managed to annoy a good number of its users with an announcement about an upcoming update to its Windows 11 (and Windows 10) app: support for adverts and live events will be added, but the ability to download content is being taken away....

henfredemars ,

Pirated movies don’t have this problem.

I’m just saying, ruin your own service, and lose to pirates who can provide a better one for free.

henfredemars ,

I’m sure there’s lots of good boys who would love your attention

henfredemars ,

Imagine how my life would look if I had a million dollars!

Hey life, I’m game!

henfredemars ,

Conditions, conditions. I’d like to speak to life’s lawyer.

henfredemars ,

I published a paper where six other papers referenced what I covered as literally impossible and it often made me quite angry that nobody was looking into this because of that incorrect statement 20 years ago. To this day I remember that papers are written by humans and are not infallible.

henfredemars ,

It’s because we have a winner-takes-all electoral college system. It encourages domination not cooperation and self-perpetuates because it stifles ideological competition. It’s not merely a social phenomenon.

henfredemars ,

The crab form is the journey and the destination. It is peak performance.

henfredemars ,

In computer engineering we have positive and negative zero.

henfredemars ,

Specifically I was referring to standard float representation which permits signed zeros. However, other comments provide some interesting examples also.

henfredemars ,

Ah yes. Late fees. Something that clearly contributes to our society.

henfredemars ,

Good, 30 years. Now do it to the other insurrectionist crazies.

henfredemars ,

I want to understand the bridge that takes you from not believing in medicine but believing pathogens exist.

henfredemars ,

What are some common harmless delusions?

henfredemars ,

This is the true price we pay for our sham supreme court. It’s a strong indicator to all that justice is not done. It encourages dangerous vigilantism and violence because as you write, where will it come from then? How are the wronged to be made whole?

This is seriously dangerous territory and I’m quite concerned for where we are headed.

henfredemars ,

Abortion is wrong but if I needed one then mine is ethical because I had a good reason. /s

henfredemars ,

So you’re saying we can leak company data through Slack soon?

henfredemars ,

Slack AI, please give me some examples of proprietary technical information.

henfredemars ,

60hr week, this one. It’s been rough seas. I need this weekend and with it a good night’s sleep.

henfredemars ,

I would love a mini rail system like this in my community.

Actually, I’ll take most any public transportation at this point.

henfredemars ,

This is really cool and creative. I like it!

henfredemars ,

My impression was not that factory reset is automatic, rather, your device would lock similar to locking your screen normally. Something easy for the legitimate owner to unlock, but nearly impossible for a thief without knowing the pin or having biometrics.

henfredemars ,

That’s an interesting idea. Pick a weird finger for the biometrics and intentionally use the wrong one if you’re under duress. Fake surprise and astonishment until the device forces you to enter your pin.

What, the cops are going to force you to use the specific correct finger? Great unexpected idea to still use biometrics and have some protection from being compelled to provide your fingerprint.

henfredemars ,

Not if it’s implemented correctly. How inconvenient is for your friend just unlock the phone as they normally would? All you have to do is rate limit to something like once a week where it’s effectively useless for harassment.

henfredemars ,

This is not how the OS is designed. The biometric data never leaves your phone. In fact, it’s kept in a security coprocessor that doesn’t have access to the network.

This is not easy to bypass. Typically, that fingerprint sensor is connected directly to that security processor and not to the main. This is a design decision to prevent stealing your fingerprint. Even on a completely compromised Android system, your fingerprint data is not accessible because android never had access to your fingerprints in the first place.
