The pirates innovated and made content available long before the corporations did.
Before streaming services took off, it was the only way to get movies and music (besides some IRC rooms). There were even a few golden years where movies would get leaked to torrents in full quality, before the theatrical release.
Music too was easier to find on napster, limewire, and torrents, than your local music store.
I like codeberg, but they also removed a torrent project I was working on because it didn't comply with german law. Kind of unavoidable when you use any centralized service, especially in a country that's severely anti-piracy.
If I type a space followed by a quotation mark, the quotation mark replaces the space, making it difficult to type start quotes. I could go on and on, but I am pretty sure all this is just “misogyny” and I need to read certain theory and I need to surround myself with feminists who are thirsty to oppress men at all costs.
Feminists are not "hungry to oppress men at all costs". You have no idea what feminism is, and its clear you're getting all your information about it from right-wing chuds. I recommend reading more books and actually engaging with feminist theory, rather than watching anti-feminist / manosphere troll channels. There are plenty of resources we can recommend, that you should read before going on these rants.
Tread carefully, because we will not hesitate to issue temp ban for misogyny. Follow Mao's advice here: No investigation, no right to speak.
Also no US auto-manufacturer is going all in on EVs, they're all mostly building gas-guzzling oversized trucks and SUVs. US automakers intentionally killed EVs in the 90s, and hoped no other country would start building them.
The point of trade decisions, is to import products you don't have enough domestic production to cover the demand for.
We know that the US auto and oil industries have no sincere desire to build EVs anyway (or any green industry whatsoever), because they did their best to kill their domestic production of EVs in the 90s, and there's no US industry for solar panels.
This is all just part of the US's trade war with China, that is prioritizing the profits of its auto and oil industries over the wellbeing of the environment, and the desires of its citizens for electric vehicles.
For a tiny language, I really like toki pona, but it's meant to be a minimal artistic language, more than an IAL (international auxiliary language).
Last I checked tho, Globasa looks really interesting. The way that they add new vocabulary, and have a good representation of world languages, seems to work well.
Esperanto is also good, but when my partner tried to learn it, they were weirded out by some of it's quirks, like noun declinations based on whether it's a subject or object, that seems unecessary.
For sure. A dissapointing number of IALs have nearly all their vocab from european languages, but there are a few that try earnestly to source their vocab from a wide set of language families. Any global initiative for an IAL needs to have a global vocabulary set to have any hopes of being introduced.
Recognizeable for whom, is the question. The majority of IALs to date have had a highly eurocentric vocabulary, so they can't be recognizeable to even a plurality of the world.
Aren't you Irish? You know the English colonizers did their best to wipe out the Irish language and replace it with the one you're advocating for right???
So why are you advocating for the displacement of the majority of the world's language families based on european languages popularity it gained through colonial displacement?
The majority of the world don't speak european languages.
Kind of wild that you use Haiti as an example here, considering the european genocide of the Taino people, as well as the european importation of african slaves, two groups that didn't speak european languages, and had their languages erased by the same process you're advocating for.
I don't get it at all. There are plenty of platforms like matrix, xmpp, simplex that don't require phone numbers tied to your identity. Signal has somehow managed to convince people that it's a private platform, despite it being a US hosted service that requires phone numbers.
Metadata and social graphs are more important than message content, esp since not many people have the time to read through individual messages to build meaning.
Signal stores phone numbers (meaning your identity, and home address), and message timestamps: who texted who and when, and who's in chats with who else. More than enough to build social graphs and connections, and also figure out where people are through their IP addresses.
Signal can't see who is texting who. They can't see which groups you are part of. Those information are end to end encrypted, same as your chats itself, your profile picture, your stories, etc.
This is completely false. They can absolutely see who is texting who, in fact they need it to be able to route messages. They have message timestamps, and phone numbers stored in their database.
Question, why do you "trust" signal? You can't see what code their centralized server is running, unlike matrix which you can self-host and build from source. You don't have to "trust" matrix, you can verify it for yourself.

With a few more additions, lemmy could serve as a good replacement. We already have a Forum / NewComments sort which is perfect for question / answer type communities. We could add a feature to make default sorts for specific communities, so they would feel less fast, or possibly a sort that brings zero comment posts (IE meaning unanswered), to the top.
The reputation and "accepted answer" features from SO are a lot less important than threaded comments can be, especially since questions often need new answers every year, making the "accepted answer" pointless.

Nowadays we constantly hear denunciations, directed toward Islam, of ‘religious totalitarianism’ or of the ‘new totalitarian enemy that is terrorism’. The language of the Cold War has reappeared with renewed vitality, as confirmed by the warning that American Senator Joseph Lieberman has issued to Saudi Arabia: beware the seduction of Islamic totalitarianism, and do not let a ‘theological iron curtain’ separate you from the Western world.
Even though the target has changed, the denunciation of totalitarianism continues to function with perfect efficiency as an ideology of war against the enemies of the Western world. And this ideology justifies the violation of the Geneva Convention, the inhuman treatment of prisoners in Guantanamo Bay, the embargo and collective punishment inflicted upon the Iraqis and other peoples, and the further torment perpetrated against the Palestinians. The struggle against totalitarianism serves to legitimate and transfigure the total war against the ‘barbarians’ who are alien to the Western world.
To add, there is only one country on earth with > 800 external military bases, and through an incredibly effective propanda campaign, they've managed to convince the world that its not them, but their enemies that are "totalitarian" and "authoritarian".
I'd like to add that the nordic countries are not socialist by any metric.
Also, we shouldn't be so quick to trust western media on the DPRK, who have gotten to the point that they can literally say anything about their enemies, and have it be believed.
I don't care about dorsey or whatever, but a lot of privacy advocates don't consider signal secure, drew devault for example. I'm def among them, you should not trust any centralized US-hosted service.
You shouldn't need to trust open source, it should be independently verifiable. Unfortunately that's not possible with either signal or telegram, as there's no way to tell what server code they're running.
Haha no, but we do have some things inside lemmy to make it better suited for question / answer communities, like the forum / new comments sort. But ya I'd be down to hear ideas on how to make lemmy better for that purpose.
Zionism is a settler-colonialist ideology dedicated to the eviction and genocide of the indigenous inhabitants of Palestine. We don't allow them or their defenders a platform here, so you'll have to go to reddit if you want to see people defending their atrocities.
