Idea: Try exclusively using Lemmy for a week.

If you love it, switch. If you hate it, don't. If you miss Reddit, use both.

I've heard Sync for Lemmy is a bit similar.

Decent use case. You do use snapshots now, right?

PiratePanPan ,
@PiratePanPan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

That's weird. I've had zero issues with BTRFS and I have both compression and snapshots.

Have you looked at bcachefs, by the way?

PiratePanPan ,
@PiratePanPan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Yeah. I'm hoping bcachefs ends up being good.

1000+ Firefox for Android extensions now available – Mozilla Add-ons Community Blog ( blog.mozilla.org )

The new open ecosystem of extensions on Firefox for Android launched in December with just over 400 extensions. Less than five months later we’ve surpassed 1,000 Firefox for Android extensions. That’s an impressive achievement by this developer community! It’s exciting to see so many developers embrace the opportunity to...

How's the battery life with the 3a? I feel like the battery has degraded to hell unless you replaced it but I am curious

PiratePanPan ,
@PiratePanPan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Flaming hot take that's probably gonna get me downvoted to hell: releasing a new version of Firefox on mobile before there was a high level of extension compatibility killed a lot of the momentum it had going for it.

I know that maintaining two separate codebases is a huge challenge, but having the power of all desktop extensions on mobile was a pretty big draw and being told that only a small fraction of them work probably turned off a lot of people. I kinda wish they just put the old codebase in maintenance mode with bug fixes since it was pretty feature complete while rolling out Fenix as a beta.

Sandboxing also still sucks even after the rewrite, (still no Fission!) which is unacceptable in today's day and age. I say all this as a Firefox diehard on all platforms, but I'm tired of people acting like it's a magic bullet to kill Chrome. It still has a lot of problems, including its resource usage. I'm hoping Servo takes off soon, because that's what made Firefox so fast on desktop even though only a fraction of it was implemented.

After announcing increased prices, Spotify to Pay Songwriters About $150 Million Less Next Year ( www.billboard.com )

When Bloomberg reported that Spotify would be upping the cost of its premium subscription from $9.99 to $10.99, and including 15 hours of audiobooks per month in the U.S., the change sounded like a win for songwriters and publishers. Higher subscription prices typically equate to a bump in U.S. mechanical royalties — but not...

BOOM! Only works for non-official / premium from Ultimate-Guitar, so I don't know if that's what you wanted. This works for Songsterr, though.

I know you can download stuff from MuseScore for free and MuseScore has guitar tabs but I don't know if you can download guitar tabs directly..

While I personally love LibreOffice, I get why your mom might not. It's super easy:

  1. Download and install Office
  2. run irm https://massgrave.dev/get | iex in Powershell and follow the instructions
  3. Profit!

What doesn't she like about LibreOffice, out of curiosity? It's easy to make the layout like Office
(View > User Interface > Tabbed) if that's her problem - I felt the exact same way, but the second I found out I could do that, I never went back.

Bitcoin was both a massive failure and success - a failure because it ended up not accomplishing its biggest goal of being a bank killer, but a success because it demonstrated not only the demand but that such a system wasn't a complete moonshot.

There's a lot of equations that go into this.

  • Where are you located? A lot of countries don't enforce laws - Switzerland, Poland, and Spain even permit torrenting for personal use. Third world countries are usually pretty safe.
  • What internet are you using? If you're on your own WiFi at home, a VPN is mandatory if you don't want nasty letters. But if you're doing it on, say, Macca's WiFi, you'll be fine. Bit of a dick move if a lot of other people are using the internet, though. It's also worth noting that some internet providers not only prohibit it, but also detect any BitTorrent usage.
  • What are you torrenting? More obscure torrents are less likely to have bots scanning for IPs.
  • Are you seeding? Seeding and/or uploading torrents without a VPN is insanely risky, because not only does it expose your IP for longer, you're also committing the crime of sharing copyrighted content (which is prosecuted far more often than merely downloading), so unless it's a torrent that's close to dying, your best bet would be to leech and run.

It's also worth noting that there are ways to download from torrents without even having to run a client.
