This should be put in the Uplifting news sub, as it is a sign that still there are independent investigations and people are held accountable no matter how powerful they are.

filister ,

It is not only PR. This will restrict considerably the ability of Netanyahu and Gallant to travel abroad. Because every country that is members of the ICC should theoretically arrest them on arrival and would not allow their planes to fly over their territories.

Israel and the US are not signatories and they don't recognise those rulings, guess why. Because both countries are acting with such a sense of impunity that it is absolutely disgusting, when they think they are above the law and those laws don't apply to them.

Thank goodness America doesn't spy on everyone... /s

I also have 3440x1440 curved at home and flat at work. My personal recommendation is to get a curved one. But if I have to shop now for a monitor, I will simply get a 4K flat. 32-34 inches. The lost vertical space is a real deal breaker for me and it annoys me.

Ultra wide are nice for example for audio/video editing, where you want to visualise the timeline, but majority of tasks you would do, including gaming on them are better on a standard 16:9 monitors.

It is amazing how many companies rely on ffmpeg and built their businesses around it.

filister ,

What makes you think that they are not scraping Lemmy too? The only reason they might not be is probably how niche Lemmy and the fediverse are, but I am sure there have been people already doing it.

The same way Israel is solving hunger with AI in Gaza.

Stalin once said, "Net cheloveka, net problemy" ("No person, no problem").

filister , (edited )

You do realise that if Israel wanted they could have flooded Gaza with humanitarian aid, and all those equilibristics with air drops and floating piers would not have been needed, right?

This is in a way like an open admission for the US that their closest Middle East Ally is using hunger as a weapon of war and they are trying to appear the good guys, while sending even more weapons to Israel to "defend" themselves.

I am all about giving people the possibility to put an end to their lives and there are plenty of people who are living almost unbearable lives, full of pain and suffering. And I know it is wrong to judge people without being in their shoes but, part of me is refusing to accept that a person who is apparently, young and physically healthy and in a relationship where the other partner obviously cares about her is so depressive and miserable that she wants to die.

So I have mixed feelings in this particular case and I feel sorry for her family and partner, who I am sure really wanted her to get better.

Nevertheless, I am happy that there are still doctors who are willing to take such cases because I can imagine how hard and psychologically challenging it would be to work with those people and they have my full respect.

filister ,

It will be fought with AI.

Israel gave us already a short glimpse of what's to come. Unmanned drones, with cameras, targeting civilians and killing them without any human intervention, where the execution order is given by the AI. AI spreading disinformation, and flooding public forums with negative opinions about their adversaries.

Whoever has the most money and the most advanced technology will rule over the poorer and less technologically advanced nations.

It is a bleak reality/future.

filister ,

Hahaha, so instead of reducing their emissions, they are actually increasing them year after year. What a hypocrisy!

filister ,

That's a very strange title, I think in the end the US would suffer more, because China would be able to easily replace this talent, but the same cannot be said for the US.

filister ,

Do not forget their so-called open document format (OOXML), which is everything but open, and their deliberate efforts to suffocate the competition, by abusing their market position.

filister , (edited )

You guys should also check out Typst https://typst.app/. It is a lot easier than LaTeX even though not as powerful. It has meaningful error messages making the debugging a lot more user friendly.

filister ,

The compiler is open source: https://github.com/typst/typst

And maybe because LaTeX is a pain to work and debug? So please don't tell me that you have never been frustrated with it.

filister , (edited )

I think that boat is gone now with Bernie being so old. But yes, you could have elected him and have one guy who genuinely cares about people. But I guess money is before people.

Kind of sad, isn't it?

filister , (edited )

While literally creating a second Nakba. Seriously I would love all those far right or even Israeli politicians to live 1 month the life of a regular Palestinian, be it in the West Bank or Gaza. Just one month!

And then they are surprised that Palestinians don't like them and are getting radicalized. Hmmm I wonder why...

filister ,

This AI craze propped a lot of companies to new historical highs. It is of course logical that most companies would like to jump on that bandwagon.

Right now we are on the honeymoon period of AI and I can only guess we are fast approaching the limits of what the AI can do.

New OLED screens are very resilient to burn-ins. You can check for yourself. And mind you, the majority of users won't have any problems with burn ins because of the way they are using those monitors, this test is far from how the majority of users will use their monitors. https://libreddit.oxymagnesium.com/r/hardware/comments/180cc44/rtings_10_month_update_permanent_burnin_oleds/

filister ,

I am waiting for a 4K monitor at least 120fps, that has proper DP 2.1 support. It is ridiculous that even today most of those monitors are coming with DP 1.4.

filister , (edited )

The DP1.4a supports maximum 4K at 120fps, everything above that is using DSC (display stream compression).and if I am not wrong adds a bit of latency and a bit of processing overhead, because your GPU has to compress the frames. Additionally the compression adds some loss to the equation, but according to reports it is very hard to distinguish it from the lossless picture.

It is not a big deal but it is nice to have support for DpP2.1. DP2.1 has more than double the bandwidth of DP1.4a, meaning that it supports 4K 240fps, introduces FEC (forward error correction) and improves the HDR quality.

The bottom line is that if I shed north of 1K I would like to get something which is future proof.

filister ,

Yes, I am aware of that limitation, but hopefully the new gen will have fully featured support for it.

filister ,

You ever wondered why traditional carmakers are pushing so hard for hydrogen? That's because they can still reuse those super inefficient combustion engines, which they perfected in the last 50-100 years, and which is serving as a big gatekeeper to newcomers.

And with EV, they need to start from scratch like everyone else and they hate it.

filister ,

It is never too late to learn something like this. Especially now when there are so many resources that can help you to learn it. It is another story if you want to find a job as a programmer, because I think the majority of companies prefer to hire younger talents.

Python is an excellent choice for a beginner.

Good luck and keep going!

filister ,

Then explain why this is a global phenomenon?

filister ,

The things I like in the PS is that they still sell a disc edition, meaning that you can buy and sell games on the cheap.

But on the other hand PC games support mods and that's unbeatable. Plus PS games usually work on two generations only and then finito.

filister ,

That's why I also switched to Obsidian. Used it for a while, but the inability to port it to another app turned me off.

filister OP ,

I am looking forward to mods adding some new content.

filister ,

Little known fact is that Israel exists today due to the acts of terror they did to the British Mandate back in the days. And they exist today thanks to those terrorist acts and thanks to the UN.

But of course nowadays they conveniently omit to mention those facts and instead claim historical ownership over the whole of Israel, even though before the foundation of Israel the Jews population in those territories was less than 10%.

filister ,

This is pretty much what is happening in most developed economies, unfortunately. Because real estate became a very profitable investment, and as a result we are now running out of affordable accommodation.

‘We will fight with our fingernails’ says Netanyahu after US threat to curb arms ( www.theguardian.com )

Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed that Israel will stand alone and “fight with our fingernails” in defiance of US threats to further restrict arms deliveries if Israeli forces proceeded with an offensive on the southern Gazan city of Rafah....

filister ,

And everyone who dares criticizing them is obviously antisemitic.

filister ,

While at the same time they forbid AI generated answers on their website, oh the turntables.

filister ,

And already have 98% positive reviews. Crazy.

filister ,

If only the döner prices were exploding. Everything seems to be way more expensive, including the rents and the only imploding thing is the purchasing power of the general population.

filister ,

Welcome to the club

filister ,

Don't go into that rabbit hole called Node-Red. You will end up writing a lot of code, and node.js isn't the best scripting language, and my suggestion is to just write a simple Python script.

Debugging is hell, version control is hell, it doesn't have VSCode integration, plus sometimes it has some weird bugs, when you forget to clean up headers, etc. and it can truly make you crazy.

If you need something super simple and it has a good integration, you might consider it, but for anything more complex, stick to Python, or some other scripting language you are familiar with.

filister ,

And I am using it almost every day and believe me I am writing a lot of code in those function nodes.

As soon as you want something more complicated that's not covered by the nodes, you need to write your own code. And then debugging this code or version controlling it becomes a nightmare.

No matter how much you hate China, China is an enormous market and the most important one for a lot of European and American companies.

‘They’re sending a message’: harsh police tactics questioned amid US campus protest crackdowns ( www.theguardian.com )

There have been 970 US student protests related to the Israel-Gaza conflict between 7 October and 26 April, the vast majority of them peaceful, according to the latest available statistics from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (Acled), which tracks political violence and political demonstrations across the US...

filister ,

You know if they were protesting Russia's war in Ukraine, police wouldn't be deployed, and no one would have been accused of racism/antisemitism.

filister ,

I don't get how people can watch reality shows but apparently they do.

Plus entertainment is a great control tool. Give people enough entertainment and they will never revolt.

filister ,

My good deed for the day: https://archive.is/fxufa

filister , (edited )

Yes, I am predicting that at some point society will reach a tipping point when certain parts of the society will start to revolt against the status quo. Because younger generations are really screwed.

I don't think they can even afford paying their rents and buying their own food by simply working. And this is pushing more and more young people to stay with their parents as long as possible, which ultimately is responsible for lowering birthrate in developed economies. And this puts additional pressure on the social system and weakens the economy of the said country as there would be less working age people for a pensioner.

Social media is creating this social stigma, where everyone pretends to be a better selves and you have a lot of comparing and this of course is unlocking mental diseases. It doesn't help that now we are living in a looming climate crisis, extreme data collection, and exploitation that benefits very few, creating an even bigger social divide.

And call me sceptical but I think a lot of things will change in the future and probably not for the better. We see what is happening in Gaza and this is just like a sneak peek of a bleak dystopia, where the working class will be controlled by the upper echelon with buzzing drones monitoring their every step, and everything monitored for even the slightest signs of descent and violently crushing them in order to preserve the status quo. We already have something similar in China with their social credit system. Authoritarian governments would become more common across the globe and it will be way harder for their population to overthrow them.

Either this or we will experience a big financial crisis when a lot of people will lose huge chunks of their savings and their livelihoods destroyed. And this will be followed by perhaps full restart or the dystopian future, where we won't own anything and everything will be loaned to us by huge corpos.
