Caught an interesting encounter - a blue jay attacked a squirrel. I've heard jays are territorial but never witnessed it first hand.

The blue jay makes contact with the squirrel and tries to peck and push it off the post.
The blue jay flies away while the squirrel regains its balance on the post.

@cheekycrowstudio they're fearless. I let my cat onto my 3rd floor balcony sometimes to soak up the sun but I can't if any are hanging around.

One of the interesting things about being friends w/ autistics is we're usually not going to tell you everything is gonna be ok if there isn't a good chance of that outcome (it feels like lying?).

So pretty please tell us if you want that because it's not what we usually want...and therefore doesn't occur to us.

Neither way is wrong depending on who you're interacting with. Just different 🙃

Multiple creative writing classes and years of hobby writing means I will absolutely look at a toot and think, "jfc that sentence is SHIT," and then have to edit some words. Not so much grammar n*zi stuff but the flow & balance or if I used "that" when I didn't need to. Things literally no one else cares about 🎉

@jasonp oof, I was lucky & went to a small school in the suburbs. And then took creative writing classes later in college. No one is more brutal than a failed author who now teaches poetry writing.

As a software engineer I wish there was an agreed-upon convention to let each other know if they're the kind of collaborator who wants or needs a heads-up about a PR just sent, or the kind who finds that intrusive and rude

Feels like there's an emoji pairing that could be used in Slack display names or whatever.

@jasonp I have no idea what a PR is but, having lived with a software engineer for years & having worked with other kinds of engineers for even more years, I can say that the rest of the populace usually sends a heads-up on things to be polite--In case there's something time-sensitive related to it or there are people waiting or who-the-fuck-knows-reason.

Having one idiot manager chew your ass into the stratosphere for not letting them know something inane can change your outlook forever.

@LikeItOrLumpIt pretty sure there's a happy medium there. My family taught me to always expect the absolute worst (not just plan for it, which I do, but expect it 🙄) and I've had to disown friends who are so toxicly positive that they can't even consider something going wrong.

I think "realistic while hoping for the best" might be the healthy target.

@LikeItOrLumpIt I try to look at things logically and figure out what's likely to happen but then hope it'll be better than that. Unless the logical thing is already good.

People don't tend to understand probability or that luck isn't actually a thing. Like, flipping a coin and getting heads ten times in a row doesn't mean you're due to get tails soon. There's still always a 50% chance.

That's why someone saying something bad is going to happen because lots of bad things have happened to them in the past isn't true. Unless witch's curses have become a thing 👀

@LikeItOrLumpIt unless it's something involving people's behavior. Then you have to take past behavior in account just as basic self preservation. But if you're flipping a coin or doing something else with two possible outcomes of equal probability, heck yeah!

    Cached US Kindle giveaway: 10 copies of Tanya Huff's GATE OF DARKNESS, CIRCLE OF LIGHT. I liked this book! A particular scene has always stood out in my memory: the very nubile, adult-aged, but developmentally-challenged young woman asking the adult but not challenged dude to come sleep with her, and him feeling she must not mean for, you know, that. I also managed to confuse this book with Jane Linksgold BROTHER TO DRAGONS, COMPANION TO OWLS. Because of the titles, nothing else.

    @kithrup sometimes Amazon or the author will temporarily take a listing down if there's quality issues to be fixed. This happens a lot with books that were converted to digital back when it was a new thing.

    An author will also sometimes take a listing down when the rights are sold to a different publisher. Anyone who previously bought that version can still access it but the link is gone off Amazon. I have several ebooks where that's the case...I can still download them from Amazon but it wouldn't show up for anyone else.

    The author mentions that it's less like its Sandman origin (which is one of the most horrific parts of the series aside from the diner, imo). But I think that's because it's based more on the spinoff comics (which seemed very YA to me). I still loved it & feel like it marries the two.

    Plus it starts leaning more into some horror in the third episode 🤷
