As a software engineer I wish there was an agreed-upon convention to let each other know if they're the kind of collaborator who wants or needs a heads-up about a PR just sent, or the kind who finds that intrusive and rude

Feels like there's an emoji pairing that could be used in Slack display names or whatever.

@jasonp I have the Github app installed in slack and notifying me immediately on my PRs, mentions, and review requests, with a daily reminder on pending reviews. But I certainly do not like getting additional pings.

@elithebearded That's exactly what I'm doing. Send me a PR and you'll likely have an approval within the hour.

I just wish that anyone would return the favor.

About 1/4 of the reviews I get have three or four redundant reviewers; I roll a die to choose whether to pick it up or remove myself.

@jasonp I find out of band for merge requests which are not either emergencies or long past due to be offensive, not just intrusive.

These things send email or, if you're using a competent (i.e. not MS Teams) chat system, a message. Getting into flow takes time. "Hey, pay attention to my request, it's got to be done NOW" feels rather rude to me.

@psa it drives me bananas that some people will:

  • perform an un-asked review on a draft merge request;
  • say "oh, you should have pinged me; NOW I'll look at it"
  • refuse to set up automation as you say;

All at the same time and somehow not see how obvious they are being that they don't really care about anyone's productivity but their own.

Myself, it's not uncommon for me to respond to a "heads-up" about a PR just sent to be "did you not see my review?" but I begrudgingly accept that people are different and can have other expectations.

@jasonp I have no idea what a PR is but, having lived with a software engineer for years & having worked with other kinds of engineers for even more years, I can say that the rest of the populace usually sends a heads-up on things to be polite--In case there's something time-sensitive related to it or there are people waiting or who-the-fuck-knows-reason.

Having one idiot manager chew your ass into the stratosphere for not letting them know something inane can change your outlook forever.

@ElizabethLeeCo A PR is a "pull request". Usually regarded as the most important thing to do should one land in your lap.

At the same time, any kind of interruption is regarded as The Worst because (ta da) it distracts from writing the stuff that will go in the next PR.

I've gotten to know some coworker's habits, but not all. Everyone has slightly different expectations about if or when to send a heads up, and guessing wrong is all but guaranteed to irritate the other party.

@jasonp I know it's impossible with engineers but people probably need to chill a little. There are enough things to deal with at work where people are intentionally trying to be a pain in the ass.

@ElizabethLeeCo Ooof, you've cut me to the quick. I am famously un-chill at work!

I take the fifth on whether I am, at times, intentionally being a pain in the ass.

At least at the current job everyone is working on basically the same product so there is not direct competition with coworkers for funding and resources.

@jasonp see? I am familiar with your people 😁

@ElizabethLeeCo Yeah, we kind of ate the world. I did not really have an expectation as a kid that dinking around with computers would be a job that anyone else would really care about or be familiar with — I didn't know any programmers, why would anyone else?

@jasonp I know y'all are a necessary evil but I refused to ever date one again after my ex. I'm too old & exhausted.
