truth, I feel pressure to buy the things I want because I have no faith I will be able to afford them later. I figure, get it now while I can so that when I can't, I'll have it.

4grams ,
@4grams@awful.systems avatar

That’s why one of the things I bought is a 3D printer.

4grams ,
@4grams@awful.systems avatar

I can’t argue with any of that. What I’m stuck on is just what the fuck to do now and what comes next.

Can you elaborate on your thoughts? I honestly can’t see a way out except for eating another shit sandwich and hoping that incrementalism can save us once sanity returns. But fuck, we’re cooked, sanity is gone for good so I’m out of ideas and the alternative only makes it worse for everyone. I’m at a point where I’m happy to vote against my best interests but that’s kinda what I feel I’ve been doing all this time.

4grams ,
@4grams@awful.systems avatar

So right, I get all that, but I’m not terribly interested in retribution for what got us here, I’m interested in tangible ways to go forward. I think all our choices are shit right now so what, just don’t vote so that I can sniff my own farts for being above it all?

I’m at the point where I agree…ish. I do believe that there is a lot of deliberate actions by the power structure of both parties but I see some actual humanity and thought coming from one side, pure spite and malice from the other and complete and utter insanity from the comedy option. Problem is the humanity in the party has gotten nothing done (not for their lack of trying) and has no control so I am have officially given up on them.

So I’m left with zero options. Great fucking country we have here that I’m utterly trapped within.

Thanks, I appreciate the perspective, I’m trying to pull myself out of this bullshit, never been more clear that my vote means nothing, the system does as the system does.

Bought some of the old versions for backup drives. That was a mistake.

4grams ,
@4grams@awful.systems avatar

Bingo. Sorry, had typed a reply about my failure rate and difficulties getting an RMA but forgot to submit.

4grams ,
@4grams@awful.systems avatar

At the time it was fine. I had an array of 4tb drives that I was backing up with a series of 5gb drives. They were just so unreliable; all but one failed while the array they backed up is still spinning strong.

4grams ,
@4grams@awful.systems avatar

Not exactly reliable and less than easy rma process.

Sorry, had typed this and forgotten to hit submit :(

@4grams@awful.systems avatar

Why is anyone even pretending to buy his bullshit. We all have seen the rulings, we’ve all heard his shouting, we’ve all witnessed his willingness to shred, delay, and deal for his party. so let’s drop this did he or didn’t he bullshit and figure out what the fuck to do about it.

Edit- sorry for the rant, not targeted at anyone.

Edit2- except alito

It’s Debian based so gets a pass, so long as it’s headless.

4grams ,
@4grams@awful.systems avatar

absolutely nothing, it's my preferred distro (and I have the grey beard to match). what I mean is that despite not using Ubuntu (or honestly even liking it that much), I give it a pass since it's the offspring of my preffered flavor.

4grams ,
@4grams@awful.systems avatar

bingo, I enjoy the stabilty and simplicity for my servers but I wouldn't run vanilla debian for a desktop. ironically I tend to use Linux Mint for desktop which I guess is a grandchild then, since it's based on Ubuntu :). oops, I use LMDE, not Mint.. forgot that I switched a while back since it's directly debian based.

4grams ,
@4grams@awful.systems avatar

does the job I suppose. I don’t use desktop enough to have any useful thoughts about it. I like that it’s a decent gui over what I’m used to.

I feel like they belong in separate categories though. Lawnmower man was regular bad, like it started as something that had value but effects and writing just weren’t up to where they should have been resulting in a hilarious, guilty pleasure mess.

Battlefield earth never stood a chance, everything about it was cursed start to finish and was a complete vanity project by a religious weirdo. There’s just plain guilt with it, no pleasure.

4grams ,
@4grams@awful.systems avatar

Pretty much. At this point a religious weirdo is a religious weirdo no matter what flavor they prefer.

I know, right. I honestly do not believe in reality anymore. This shit is too fucked up.

Funny how there’s always a valid reason and it just so happens to always favor the orange turnip.

I have an m2 iPad pro. The last thing it needs is more processing power, what it needs is better software to make use of the power that it has. I’d love to run full OS X on it considering I paid more than some MacBooks.

I feel the same way. I feel like we used to buy things and hold onto them for a while, nowadays, everything seems to be designed to have a single year lifecycle. I like AirPods but now that their battery died and I can’t replace them, I’m looking at going back to the cord. But now of course we’re in dongle hell since there’s only one port..

I’m someone who vastly prefers to work in an office. It’s kind of a pain in the ass dealing with remote workers, meetings having gone to teams instead of in person, it just feels impersonal and as a former manager it is harder to maintain and keep your staff engaged.

But this is the modern workforce, and we have plenty of evidence that productivity is still there with a hybrid or remote office. When I was a manager I had to change my strategies, I had to adapt and learn, just like everything else I do in my professional life. Now that I am part of leadership but without direct reports, it’s just more adapting and learning that I am doing to stay relevant.

poor management is why all these companies are trying to force people back, it’s just people who cannot adapt.

@4grams@awful.systems avatar

lol, was kinda going for that :)

just look at the abortion debate, folks are celebrating that AZ now has a 15 week ban instead of a full ban.

    Feels like the automotive world is in utter chaos. I do believe in EVs and hybrids but manufacturers have focused on the premium segment to their own detriment. If they had started with the MVP instead of a flagship things might be in a different situation.

    Yes, I am an aware of the Tesla strategy of starting high end but they seem to have abandoned that goal in favor of prestige meme wagons.

    It ain’t just young people. I’ve got a lot of lefty friends and family who have been lost and are willing to gamble on turnip because they think there is no way to handle things worse than we are now.

    you won't get any argument from me. these folks are the same ones telling me that I'm pro-war (generally in not such nice terms) because I want to avoid the abject horrors of a dictatorship; but apparently I'm just paranoid and overreacting.

    IMHO, he's hedging his bets. turnip isn't exactly a barr fan so he's calculating that he'll stay off the list after the next election. he knows that nothing he says matters and so is laying the groundwork to keep his head.

    I wish I could figure out if I have it. I asked my doctor how to get diagnosed, he said I’d need to talk to a psychiatrist. I got a referral and tried to setup and appointment but they said I couldn’t be tested since I have no history of it. They instead want to put me on antidepressants but I’ve gone through enough of them to know that ain’t what my issue is.

    Mental health care in this country is a fucking joke.

    4grams ,
    @4grams@awful.systems avatar

    I honestly don’t want to be medicated, but I’d like a diagnosis to help me find strategies. I’m middle aged so have figured out how to live with the brain I have but it would be nice to not have to struggle against my nature so much.

    I’m probably just lazy or easily distracted, or disorganized, etc. and am looking for excuses.

    Good advice, thanks. I am not ruling out medication, but I would hesitate to put one of my kids on it if they were diagnosed and so I am hesitant for the same reasons. The reason I’d like a diagnosis though is that I am pathologically unable to act without data. I’d feel like a complete imposter at an ADHD event unless I was sure I was one of the ranks.

    I do believe it, more self critical than anything but I'm working on it :)

    4grams ,
    @4grams@awful.systems avatar

    thanks, I do appreciate it. it's a me problem though that I'm working on.

    part of it is I suffered a brain injury last year and I'm still unsure if my faculties are fully intact.

    4grams ,
    @4grams@awful.systems avatar

    well, I've got other stuff going on, depression and a brain injury last year that I'm still working through. on top of that, as a kid in the 80's I was tested for ADD but at the time they were more looking at the inattentive behaviours. however, I'm pretty sure I'm the other side of that coin and ADHD didn't become a thing (at least mainstream) 'til several years later.

    anyway thanks, I really appreciate the advice.

    the garage. I was 6 or 7, my mom was undergoing a major health situation and the medication wasn't doing her mental processes any favors. One morning she was running late and so asked me to start her car. I'd never started a car in my life, I had no idea what to do and I couldn't reach the pedals so I asked my younger sibling to help out. I stayed on the floor and operated the pedals, my sibling was in charge of the key.

    mind you, this was a stickshift and it was parked in the driveway, facing the garage door.

    I have no idea what we actually did, I only remember the crashes as we went through the garage door and through the back wall. The front of the car now blocking the alley, we yanked the key ran to hide because we had just taken down a fucking building ruined mom's new car, and thought we were going to be killed. Of course she instantly realized what happened and knew that she was at fault so when she found us we were of course in no trouble; but man, what a ride that was...

    @4grams@awful.systems avatar

    She takes full responsibility but in her defense, the meds she was on really did a number on her, especially as a single mom.

    I’m convinced it’s the same “fuck you get mine” mentality that it always has been. turnip just is showing them how to play the game. these clownshoes all think they can be the next one to cheat their way to the top. new american dream everyone.
