streaming or torrenting today vs. 5 years ago

I've been a good boy for 5 years or so but the seas call to me. Are streaming sites the way to go now or is torrenting still a better bet for mainstream movies and tv? I'd imagine all of my accounts have been deleted on those sites so I'd be starting over.

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

There is if you intend to keep torrents alive.

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

It's honestly sad, almost to the point where defederating from them would be better

But I'm sure we'd be loosing good people from hexbear too

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Reading 100% feels better, seeing tiny icons/logos without it being a pixelated mess is also good, and video looks much crisper, same goes for videogames, and the performance hit from 1080 to 1440 isn't bad at all.

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Is your statement true? Probably

But if we set our standards to "enough", there wouldn't be any progress

Was the switch enough for couch gamers? Sure. Did valve want to progress further? They did.

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Gnome isn't bad, at all. The team has caused controversy and made mistakes, but gnome's experience is great.

Talking about ubuntu, snaps suck, and it is more "bloated" than what you'd expect, but still, ubuntu isn't half bad. Is mint better for what the ubuntu audience wants? Yes. Does ubuntu still work well? Yes

And ubuntu server rocks

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Some will use the built in note editor, some the built in music player, some the built in video player, and now some will use matrix

Mint isn't overly bloated, or even "bloated", these apps are useful for a decent part of the demographic, and having them preinstalled lowers the friction a new user feels when installing a new OS

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I don't know how you messed that up, usually the switch is as easy as it can be, and the issue comes when using it, for its lack of explicit sync, causing apps to flicker, and frame pacing in games to be plain bad

This is being fixed in the next two months thankfully

Edit: Taking about Nvidia wayland support here, AMD and Intel are great

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Your work app may be electron based (which is a bit too common nowadays), and until they update to electron 29, wayland won't probably work.

(or until they add xwayland video bridge, but the former option is better than the latter.

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Fedora 40 with kde plasma 6 dropped a day or two ago, and they did remove x11, you have to get it from the repo in case you want it, otherwise, it only comes and is planned for wayland, which I believe is great, for once it does seem like the year of wayland

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Ubuntu 100%, if you count how many distros are ubuntu based (and collaterally debian based), but I believe it is the most used one even if you only count official ubuntu releases

Maybe arch would be quite high, if you count the steamdeck as desktop (maybe), and the big increase on arch users in the past couple of years (wen't from being rare to 1 in 3 users saying "I use arch btw")

I’ll invest in yourself, I have 1 euro, is that plenty for you sir?

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

It turns off in you install linux

Great success

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

May I add, I also use Symfonium, it’s the best one by far, but it isn’t open source as OP is asking.

That said, the Dev is a good guy, and the app has 1 month free trial (without asking for credit card or anything)

It’s 5,49 I believe, single payment. Totally worth it.

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I’m not a fan of him, nor a twitter user, but as far as free speech is concerned, that should mean your opinion is not censored, but the platform doesn’t have to be free to use, but if it doesn’t discriminate opinions, and everyone is allowed to make an account, and everyone has to pay the same

That’s equal treatment, and isn’t going against free speech.

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I hope github “enshitifies” to bankruptcy

Let’s use codeberg :))

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

You know what doesn’t suck?

  • Freetube on PC
  • Libretube on Android
  • SmartTube on AndroidTV

I like revanced, but these are cooler :)

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

That works, but If you are okay with that experience, I encourage you even more to give libretube a try

It’s open source, and doesn’t collect user data, and works in my opinion better than firefox+ublock on android

On pc firefox+ublock is great, for now at least

How do you check a website is trustworthy?

Prowlarr has listed in its default indexers a domain that reminds me a lof of another domain that closed in the last few years, but it’s clearly a revival using the same name and adding an article behind it. I don’t want to risk downloading from it but it looks well made and legit and responsive and well kept, basically too...

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

If you care about quality and want to grind for a couple or more months*

Where/how to efficiently download music in bulk?

I have a relatively large collection of songs I downloaded from YouTube, one-by-one, on my Android phone. I would like to download a lot more of the songs I like, with correct metadata and without having to manually edit the album cover art, artist, and more, on my Windows PC....

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Until you hit a wall looking for some indie stuff and the only guy you find asks you for money lol.

But besides a couple of those, soulseek’s great, and usually people there try to go for quality, or at the very least will have the right metadata. If not, there’s a couple deezer downloaders on github that work really good, and an older one hosted in the internet archive I believe.

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

To summarize: It was a copycat version of CocoaBob’s GBA4iOS, uploaded without his consent, and on top of that, filled with ads and tracking user data.

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Where’s the rocket launcher? Rockie thumbnail

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar
  • Mullvad: Very privacy focused, ok priced, very robust. Sadly they removed port forwarding not too long ago.
  • AirVPN: Good speeds, many servers, cheap, port fowarding.
  • ProtonVPN: Works well, specially if you like the idea of getting their services together (mail, cloud, vpn)
shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Oh no, how will I get spyware into my pc then? What a shame

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Is explicit sync a good enough solution to make wayland gaming with nvidia a reality(+ remove window flickering like some people claim it will)? It’s the last obstacle I find now trying to move my main pc to linux, and I don’t really want to use x11.

Pd. Lesson learned, next time I’ll get an AMD gpu.

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

First: This looks really great, awesome man

Second: Fucking great taste, I was just watching a two minute papers video when I saw this, Brodi’s awesome too

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

This may actually push users into thinking about modding discord, or even better, switching to matrix

Good move discord, I like it

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Worth it? Sure, but I’d try to grab a 2nd hand steamdeck instead, similar prices, but much more capable

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

It isnt the best one, but its cheap, allows port forwarding and its not sketchy as far as we know

Air vpn

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Download stremio, install the “torrentio” addon, and you’re good to go, search a movie and play it, it keeps track of half watched movies and series, has subtitles integration with opensubtitles, and supports tv android pc etc

If you have the money, pay for real debrid and you’ll get better reliability

Follow-up: OpenBSD routers on AliExpress mini PCs

I got lots of replies to the last post showing the little OpenBSD internet gateway setup (super interesting; thanks!). Here's more info and pictures:

Something I've been meaning to share for years now.

Been thinking about buying a similar setup, and you just pushed me into buying a “Chinabox

Let’s see how this goes, if It explodes you owe me a beer, and a pair of hands, and another chinabox (I’m not a quitter)

I’ve needed something like this for a while, thank you buddy

Reddit is licensing its content to Google to help train its AI models ( www.engadget.com )

Google has struck a deal with Reddit that will allow the search engine maker to train its AI models on Reddit’s vast catalog of user-generated content, the two companies announced. Under the arrangement, Google will get access to Reddit’s Data API, which will help the company “better understand” content from the site....

@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I just have to port over some guides I did in the past to iFixit, and then I’ll pull the trigger on reddit. <

Thanks for making my decision easier.

And that’s the right way to approach it, but in a platform were niche communities are so empty, even a meaningless comment counts

But yeah, I try to follow the same approach, I’m interested in many things, and subscribed to a lot of communities, but why should I comment if it doesn’t help or adds anything to the theme of the post

Well, If anyone reads this, keep this as a good habit, even if it feels a bit weird in here, comment when you are of help, and learn from others when you have nothing to say

Edit: I love how the replies to this are doing the exact opposite lol, take care boys, I actually got a good laugh from this

Piracy as a quality of service issue

I am one of those suckers (:sigh) who paid for Youtube since it bundled Youtube Music with it. However, today I used the latter’s Revanced version and it was so much customizable. Right from removing menu items to the stupid cast button Google has forced on us; it seems a billion dollar company can’t compete with these folks...

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I find this to be the case to absolutely every app, free versions being filled with adds, selling your data, trying to fry you with more and more dopamine intensive content. And then the paid version, which usually is overpriced, happens to be worse than a modified client of the same app but free.

Youtube for example, doesn’t allow you to download content in 1080, 1440 or 4k, 720 is the limit, for a paid subscription. Then you try revanced and oh wow, you can download 4k content for free, how cool is that?

And usually changing the interface to make it more addictive, forcing shorts on Youtube, reels on Instagram, making the base app worse so people go for the paid version, is why people end up with moddified clients/applications, yet the companies are obviously going to blame us, “pirates oh very bad, they steal content and avoid ads, why would they do such crime”,

Instead of wondering why their app is 4 times heavier than a couple years back, has 8x the useless crap built-in, and is priced 2x than a year ago. At least this crap has taught me to value actual well built apps by great people, in many cases, out of passion.

Props to Freetube, my greatest discovery last year, I can’t even express how much I missed using a useful interface for youtube, instead of what we have now…

Well that’s it, no-one should feel bad for using alternative apps when the actual company is the one to push users out of their apps with shitty updates and anti-consumer practices.

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Yeah, on pc yt-dlp is absolutely the best option, If I remember right, there’s even a way of downloading the high bitrate versions of videos spoofing iOS or whatever, but maybe this was using a fork of it

And on android, I used to rock youtube mate

Discord:

  • Takes down accounts for mass reporting without checking the issue.
  • Takes down accounts for sharing slightly copyrighted content.
  • Takes down accounts for using alternative discord clients.
  • Doesn’t take down accounts related to coordinated spam attacks to another platform.

Discord being discord I guess, but it’s weird, I’ve seen them take down servers and accounts for all sorts of light issues, but not for this?

shaytan ,
@shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Wow, thank you, I’m really new to this, I’ll edit the comment, and do that from now on :)
