I dont know if this has been asked before or if this may be a little goofy of a question but I didn't see anything relating to it and I'm kinda curious what the culture of Lemmy is like and what sort of common things people see....
I am new, and I am sure that the culture has changed a lot like with Mastodon in the last few years, but what I perceive is lots of FOSS and Linux people, which is unsurprising. There's tech/infosec people like on Mastodon, and people that have what I consider a very healthy skepticism about big data, corporations, and corporate surveillance. I also notice that political attitudes have a much healthier range than any other social media I've been on in the last decade - and I don't just mean that there are more people like me. There is a good number of people I disagree with, too.
There are definitely people interested in games and niche interests/hobbies, but it feels to me like the community is still very FOSS-centric. Which is nice. :)
This is a genuine question, so please don't do me like Vlad the Impaler. What is your opinion about the benefits of upgrading to displays beyond 1080p?...
Eeerp. Yep, I meant PPI not DPI. Thanks for the write-up about text scaling, though, I will note that when I end up upgrading. The PPI calc also looks interesting.
I actually really like this poster. I have chatted at them a couple of times, and they seem like a good person.
I also wanted to say that - of course, people have biases. To me, the positive element of the heightened awareness and discourse around bias in the last few decades is that we understand that everyone has it, not that you should go seek out some kind of perfect, non-existent, unbiased source..
When I see Al Jazeera is reporting on an issue or an element of a larger topic in a way that has not been served by western media, that doesn't mean I forget where Al Jazeera's funding comes from. It does remind me that human beings do journalism at Al Jazeera, and if I disregard all of the information being served there instead of weighing it up to the best of my ability, then I am failing. I think that I extend the same attitude towards contributions of ☆Youngthugs☆ and others doing this news-sharing.
reminder for all the readers that social democracy killed Karl and Rosa with Freikorps personnel - quelling the communist movement threatening to achieve the aims of the revolution that put them in power. Freikorps then seamlessly transitioned into Nazi leadership a few years later
Precisely. I am interested in reading what people have to share, and for the most part I feel that people here are interested and thoughtful when they share! I am not taking it for granted - its good while it lasts - and can’t ignore that it is closer to Reddit than the 00s forums that I really miss, but it’s good.
I think you’re demanding a level of nuance and details from the answers that aren’t about the use cases of the noobs like me and OP.
I know you are right in specific Arch Man use cases, but by the time people will be ready or interested in going down that road, they will have better context and understanding and will not need to be convinced by anyone in this thread. They’ll be talking to you, by that point, and there will be no misunderstanding. These are different users.
