I prefer to buy video games without knowing anything about them

When I hear about a new game, I usually read the first sentence or two on Wikipedia. I rule out games described as certain genres or types, like soulslike or online-only multiplayer games. Then, I check reviews on a site like Metacritic. If the critic or user reviews (doesn't need to be both) are good enough, I add it to a list...

shadowSprite ,

I look at genre, average review, and watch maybe 30 seconds to a minute of a game play type trailer. If it looks interesting, I'll add it to my wishlist and buy it when I can afford it. I've been let down a few times, and absolutely lost my soul to a few games that I knew nothing about prior.

I used to be an EMT (am going to be working as one again soon) and where I worked we had some good cops and some real shitty cops who had no business being cops, but one thing that they all had in common was that the rules were if someone asked for medical help, they had to call the ambulance. Didn't matter if it looked like obvious bullshit, all the departments in the area I worked had a blanket policy that they weren't medical professionals and they couldn't make that decision. You could have a tiny little cut on your finger and ask for medical help and even the shittiest cops would sigh and call for EMS. These cops infuriate me. How many more people have to get murdered? If someone asks for help fucking help them and sort out the details later.

I was a little lost until the iPod and the t9 showed up, then it was almost scary how normal it all felt. I didn't even realize I still remembered t9 but I didn't even have to think.

shadowSprite ,

Yes, you're right, my mistake!

When was the last time you felt helpless in life?

I'm 24 and dealing with high blood pressure. I've seen five doctors, had countless tests, and they all say the same thing: "Take these pills and try to reduce pressure in your life." It's as though my blood pressure and heart rate have minds of their own, fluctuating freely without any reason....

shadowSprite ,

If you've had covid, it's done a number on some young people's cardiovascular systems. I know a person in their 20s who was very healthy, got covid, and was shortly after diagnosed with POTS. I've heard of several other people being diagnosed with POTS after getting covid.

shadowSprite ,

Shit, Iā€™ll never forget being at home watching the towers burn on TV as a kid and seeing things falling from them and asking my mom what they were and hearing ā€œthose are people jumping rather than burn to deathā€. Horrifying. What a choice to make.

shadowSprite ,

Iā€™m also joining the group coming here from All, Iā€™ve never heard of this, but just wanted to chime in and say Iā€™m sorry some of you have to DYI your own healthcare because the system is failing you, please be safe and healthy.

shadowSprite ,

I wish the EU would fucking invade the US already. Either put us out of our misery or save us, either way, it stops our leaders from spreading the evil and murder around the globe.

shadowSprite ,

I just got an autofeeder for my cats. Wonderful thing. My cats still come to me and sit and scream for food for the hour before each mealtime, and we argue about whether or not they currently need my participation in mealtime, right up until the thing kicks on, then theyā€™re off like a shot. Itā€™s hilarious.

shadowSprite ,

I feed my cats their wet food on large plates the size of dinner plates. The assholes still prefer to paw it onto the floor and eat it off there, and then leave a mess everywhere. They get their kibble in a wide shallow bowl, and that stays in place.

shadowSprite ,

Iā€™ve never been motivated to create a time machine, but youā€™ve suddenly made it extremely appealingā€¦

shadowSprite ,

You think zip ties will hold together at those speeds? Not to mention cause drag due to the tiny bumps? Do you know anything about aerodynamical engineering?

You have to zip tie it together, then duct tape over top nice and smooth for extra holding strength and to reduce wind resistance. Boeing, hire me instead!

shadowSprite ,

(Clearly I donā€™t know anything about aerodynamically engineering)

shadowSprite ,

1 is when I have had to pee for the past 2 hours but have had a warm happy kitty on my lap that I didnā€™t want to disturb but now the situation is dire.

2 is every other time.

shadowSprite ,

Iā€™m down 40ish in a year. I mean, itā€™s weight Iā€™ve been trying desperately without success to lose for years, but eventually Iā€™m going to run out. And then when itā€™s 3am on a Tuesday and Iā€™m lying awake mentally working through my budget for the 11th time that week I go ā€œIā€™ve been stressed and skipped meals before and never lost weight, do I have cancer? Because I really canā€™t afford that.ā€

shadowSprite ,

Alcohol turns me into a very morose, mellow philosopher who thinks the world is even darker and more fucked than I think when Iā€™m sober. It also gives me the munchies.

I thought that was supposed to be weed that did that. But Iā€™ve never smoked weed, so idk. Iā€™ve pretty much stopped drinking.

I worked at [generic big-name eyeglass store/optometrist] for a few months and we werenā€™t allowed to adjust any eyeglasses that werenā€™t purchased at our store because if they broke while we were trying to bend them we couldnā€™t just get another frame and replace them, but also it was 2022 and they only paid me $12/hr so if someone came in and seemed chill Iā€™d always be like hey, Iā€™m obviously going to try really hard to not break your glasses, but sometimes shit happens and if it does you are on your own because you didnā€™t get them here and Iā€™m not allowed to do this, and would just adjust them.

shadowSprite ,

I have mullvad and also browse certain Reddit communities without an account. Some of the servers still get through. If youā€™re using US servers I know there are a few of the NY, Atlanta, and Virginia servers Iā€™ve been able to get through on. Iā€™ve also gotten through on some of the West Coast ones but I canā€™t remember which ones, I only remember the last 3 because they were the last ones I trial and error throughed while actually paying attention to which servers I was connecting to instead of picking at random.

shadowSprite ,

Ooh, can I share a sweet story instead, because this made it pop into my head and itā€™s a memory of a wonderful person that I wish everyone could have known?

I used to work at this small business when I was younger, and one of the employees was an older guy in his 80s who had retired and worked a few hours a week just to keep busy. He loved us teens and twenty somethings and we adored and respected him.

As time went on, the assistant manager left and I ended up being promoted to assistant manager. And eventually daylight savings happened and the clock changed. This employee came in for his first shift after the time change and looked half dejected and half embarrassed and he quietly explained to me that he didnā€™t know how to change the time on his watch, that the previous assistant manager had always done it for him, so now he was trying to deal with his watch being an hour off. I happily changed the time for him, and after that I changed it for him every time change. Even after he retired for good he would come in during my shift and give me his watch and Iā€™d set it forward or back the hour so it could be right and heā€™d be thrilled every time.

Medieval combat. Iā€™d love to learn how to sword fight, like genuinely sword fight.

shadowSprite ,

What if we canā€™t see God because weā€™re all just a bunch of random synapses firing in some higher beings brain while theyā€™re having a fever dream? After our world ā€œendsā€ theyā€™re gonna wake up and go ā€œholy shit that was a fucked up dreamā€

What do you think about that most big VR technology is owned by big companies like Meta and Tik Tok?

I mean yeah itā€™s obvious that itā€™s an oportunity for making money on a new marked and so on, but, even if itā€™s a bit silly, dreaming of VR technology like in Ready Player One(minus the distopian world) for real life it feels like the bad guys already won, when we will have the technology. Like the omni One is just about to...

shadowSprite ,

Modded Skyrim in VR is amazing too. Iā€™ve put my Index on and had hours slip by without realizing it. Thereā€™s nothing like wandering around Skyrim and killing dragons in VR. And then of course thereā€™s also Half Life Alyx. That game will make you forget youā€™re in a gameā€¦

When I was in my late teens/early twenties I truly thought that in ten years Iā€™d own a home for sure, with some hard work and dedication.

Ten years later, I donā€™t even get to buy groceries every week or eat every day. Iā€™ve lost 30 pounds in the last year just from skipping so many meals.

I canā€™t wait to see what the next ten years holds.

And if one more person tells me I should make sure to invest for retirementā€¦ I canā€™t even feed myself, what you want me to invest? My retirement plan is work until Iā€™m too old/sick/injured and then off myself.

shadowSprite ,

I wasnā€™t smart enough to make that choice this time around, but next life being born into a rich family is my number one criteria :)

shadowSprite ,

The funny thing is that Iā€™ve never had avocado toast and I tried coffee once, hated it, and never tried it again. I canā€™t drink energy drinks either. Take that, financial columnists!

shadowSprite ,

I dont smoke, Iā€™ve never done drugs, and I drink a few times a year. Have I been guilty of a few frivolous purchases in the past? Sure, but now I literally do not have the money, so I canā€™t. I just make lists of things Iā€™d like to buy ā€œsomeday.ā€

Iā€™ve gone out and bought a $7 rotisserie chicken, a $3 bag of noodles and a $3 bag of carrots, thrown them in a pot with a bunch of garlic, spices and water, slow cooked them for an entire day, then pulled out the chicken, ripped off all the meat, discarded the carcass, and lived for an entire month off that soup. I was sooo sick of chicken noodle soup.

But I shouldnā€™t have to. Why should I work my ass off for companies who make more and more profits while my rent goes up, food costs more and more, and every other fucking bill goes up, yet if I ask for a raise Iā€™m a lazy millenial?

Have some fucking empathy.

shadowSprite ,

Genuine question, I just tried this on my phone with both Firefox and Brave (my backup browser). Why does Firefox leak so much more data than Brave? Brave pretty much only showed which number version of Android Iā€™m running and my time zone, Firefox showed all kinds of unique data including all the sensor readings from my phone, how many cameras it has, all the hardware components, and that fingerprint reading is allowed and I have all my settings as strict as they can be. I thought Firefox was supposed to be the way better option.

Do YouTube series count? If so, the boys from Adventures in Azerum are on their way to go get the Horn of Jurgen Windcaller for the Greybeards.

Amazon Subscribe & Save percentages not adding up ( lemmy.ml )

I only needed one more item to ā€œunlock extra savings up to 15%ā€, so I added an extra item to see what the savings would be. I didnā€™t think the savings matched what was advertised, so I removed an item to see what the difference was (making sure to screenshot before/after this time). Turns out the price of 3 out of 4 items...

shadowSprite ,

Chewy is amazing. Price is very consistent and customer service is scary good. I once ordered food for my cat while sitting eating dinner. The next morning at 6am I opened my door to go to work and literally tripped over my cats food. I still have no fucking clue how the hell it got to me so quick, it was 12ish hours. When I moved and switched my auto subscription their system flagged my change of address as fraud and emailed me to call customer service. I called at literally 3am (because Iā€™m a freakish night owl) expecting to work my way through an automated system and the phone rang twice and a very cheerful person answered. I almost hung up in shock and then almost was the jerk calling at 3am asking ā€œwhy are you answering the phone at 3am?ā€

shadowSprite ,

I gave myself myself a concussion almost the same way, except my clumsy ass was getting into my car and I slammed the side of my head on the roof of my car, everything went black, and then the door that I had already started to swing shut came and slammed into the other side of my head, knocking me back to my senses. I had a dent above my ear for a year lol.

shadowSprite ,

I want to be able to live in a small place with a backyard facing woods, hills, or water. I want to be able to pay my bills with enough left over for some savings, some fun stuff, and maybe a short vacation once every year or two. I want to go hiking on the weekend and I want to sit on my back porch at night and drink tea while wrapped in a blanket and I want a gaming room with a big window so I can play games late at night looking up at the sky. Why are my dreams so unattainable?

shadowSprite ,

I know youā€™re talking alcoholic cider, but you just brought back one of the few happy memories of my childhood. There used to be a small (nonalcoholic) apple cider making business relatively close to where I grew up. Every fall weā€™d compile a whole bunch of empty gallon jugs and make the drive over there. They had a giant keg of apple cider that theyā€™d fill all the jugs from, and since I was just a kid the employees used to let me help them fill up the jugs. The smell of that place was absolute heaven. Weā€™d leave with about 10 or 15 gallons of apple cider that weā€™d freeze for the rest of the year and a small jar of apple butter.

Can Linux be dual booted on a computer with Windows?

I have a Lenovo Yoga running Windows 10 on a 1TB SSD and at some point will probably have to upgrade it to Windows 11. I use it for school and have to keep Windows on it for now because of what Iā€™m currently doing. I want to start getting into Linux in hopes of making the switch sometime down the line. Is partitioning the disk...

shadowSprite OP ,

Thank you! This is all good advice. Iā€™ve never actually used a VM but will have to do more research on installing and using one. When you (and everyone else here) say shrink the partition from inside windows, do you mean from within the disk management software? Iā€™m familiar with that, having added extra drives on my other computers. I actually have 3 computers, 2 laptops and a gaming rig I built, but they both have Nvidia GPUs and Iā€™ve heard so many bad things about Nvidia and Linux and I donā€™t want my first Linux experience to be fighting it out with those. If I like Linux Iā€™ll probably switch one of my other computers over to Linux either entirely or on one of the second drives (both my other computers have 2 different drives).

shadowSprite OP ,

I have no idea. Iā€™ve known it for years. All my computer knowledge is self taught so random things Iā€™m fairly knowledgeable on and then thereā€™s things that are common knowledge Iā€™ve never heard of. Iā€™m doing my best out here! I was a sheltered kid who grew up into an adult that doesnā€™t know anyone tech savvy!

shadowSprite OP ,

Thanks! Iā€™ve been interested in Linux for awhile now. I donā€™t plan on sharing files between the two OSes, and Iā€™m religious about my backups. If I donā€™t have at least 3 or 4 backups I donā€™t consider my data backed up :)

shadowSprite OP ,

I did google it, and found a bunch of articles about dual booting with windows 7. I didnā€™t know if it was still possible or if it would be smart to try for someone with no experience with Linux, so I thought Iā€™d come to a sub where there are tons of people who use Linux daily and could give me some advice about whether I should try it or not. Thanks for the input :)

shadowSprite OP ,

Thanks! This is all good information and I appreciate you taking the time to write it all out for me!

ā€œWe must stop eating!ā€ cried Toad, as he ate another. ā€œYes,ā€ said Frog, reaching for a cookie, ā€œwe need will power.ā€ (Frog and Toad Together)

Thatā€™s me when I have good cookies.

I noticed a few months ago that if I would put things in my cart and not order them right away, the price in my cart would jump a lot without notice, but the price on the page would stay the same. Like, I added something that was $30 to my cart, 2 days later it was $50 in my cart but the store page still showed the price as $30 and there wasnt the usual ā€œan item in your cart changed priceā€ message. I had to delete it from my cart and re-add it to get the price to drop. There was no deal, it wasnā€™t subscribe and save, nothing. This happened multiple times. I also had prime and couldnā€™t tell you the last time my shipping took less than 2 weeks, and I live near a city. Iā€™ve since canceled prime and stopped ordering from Amazon unless I canā€™t find what I need elsewhere. Want to scam me, fuck you.

You can only pick 2 games from steam to play for the rest of your life, what games are they? ( sh.itjust.works )

I have a large library of steam games, but yet always come back to Garry mod and ravensfield. I keep coming back for the modded content and every other game is excellent, donā€™t get me wrong. But a lot of big games like RD2 and watchdogs 2 just seem like such a long time investment. What 2 games do you infinitely come back to?

shadowSprite ,

Skyrim and Witcher 3. Shoutouts to Baldurs Gate and Witcher 2, but the latter is far too short for me to want it on my ā€œyou can only play thisā€ list, itā€™s quirky but thereā€™s something special as hell about it for me. Iā€™ve played it through about 15 times.

shadowSprite ,

I dream of being in New Zealand or a Nordic country, but Iā€™m a broke American loser whoā€™s too poor to even go visit those countries, and so they donā€™t even want me there in the first place. I will keep dreaming, and die with my dreams unfulfilled. Maybe next life.

shadowSprite ,

Thatā€™s why Iā€™d only go there if money wasnā€™t an issue :) otherwise Iā€™d rather be in a Nordic country. Itā€™s a shame to see countries look at the US and think weā€™re something to emulate.

I'm tired with all this Big-Phone-Elitism

Iā€™m someone with relatively small hands, plus I want my phone to be on the smaller side since I prefer to use my tablet/computer/tv to watch content. But this trend where many manufacturers tend to keep futures away from smaller phones to drive people to bigger phones is driving me crazy and really makes it hard for me to buy...

shadowSprite ,

I was cleaning out awhile ago and found my first ever smartphone, a Galaxy s3. Boy, the memoriesā€¦ that phone sure wasnā€™t perfect, but I think itā€™s still my favorite phone, and it was literally the perfect size for my tiny ass hands. I hate hauling a small tablet around.

shadowSprite ,

Im a broke woman with chronic health problems in a red state who may be homeless soon and who sure as hell canā€™t afford to leave and go somewhere better. I guess Iā€™ll just keep trudging along and hope that somehow weā€™re all being hysterical and things wonā€™t actually get that bad but if they do and if I lose what little social assistance I have I guess Iā€™ll just tap out and call it a life, ya know?

shadowSprite ,

This is adulthoodā€¦

Married 8 years. Worked my butt off when we were dating/engaged and never managed to go to college, but he did. Iā€™ve always wanted to go. We finally got somewhat stable the last few years, so I enrolled. A little over a year of FT in, Iā€™m busting my ass again, not working at all since I started, because he told me ā€œdonā€™t work, just focus on studying and getting good grades, and finish as soon as you can.ā€ Iā€™m a fucking idiot. He left me last week with literally no warning. I have no job, no money, no friends, and the only 2 family members I have are 1000 miles away. Been going to classes because I have no idea what else to do but fuck.

shadowSprite ,

Same. Grew up very sheltered, under-educated, and brainwashed. Got out into the real world, started learning, started seeing how things actually worked. Realized that it wasnā€™t just ā€œslutsā€ having abortions for convenience. Realized that even though I was super careful and in a committed relationship, getting pregnant would ruin my life and Iā€™d probably seriously consider an abortion and Iā€™d better re-think my stance or have to accept I was a genuine hypocrite. Got into EMS, started going out into peopleā€™s housesā€¦ the poverty Iā€™ve seenā€¦ the way we allow people to live in this countryā€¦ itā€™s appalling. Not only am I incredibly pro-choice, Iā€™ve gone from conservative/libertarian to so far left/pro social services. I think anyone who wants to sit on their couch and talk about how people donā€™t deserve abortions or donā€™t deserve social services should be forced to go talk to these people because I met so many people who were unfortunate enough to be chronically ill and unable to work or who worked harder than me but in low-paid jobs and who had no hope of ever getting out of the hole they were in.
