That's good news I guess? But it's not the end of this story, right?

Hjalamanger ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

What's up with find? I've got so used to fd that I don't understand what this is referring to

Hjalamanger ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

Nice, UX is clearly a top priority (;

I'll have to try and see if FD does the same bullshit though

Hjalamanger ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

I don't really know, that might be true in some places but not here in Sweden. We have public service TV and radio that's free and add free. OFC the don't have everything and you'll probably end up watching things from other places anyways but it at least decreases the class divide.

However things on the internet are still as true. Not because it's that hard to use a add blocker but it's still mostly tech sawy people that do.

What is your experience with the search quality of 4get?

Hjalamanger ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

Not really? It has alot of icons which are all driven by nerd font. Also you can basically use any font you want, neard just addes some extra glyphs

Hjalamanger ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

From a Swedish standpoint, this is just nonsense. The Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Finland, Island and Denmark) are all in the top six most democratic countries in the world (according to The economist, England). These are were much socialist countries and most definitely democratic.

Then you have china, soviet and alike. Those are countries that call(ed) themself communist. I will argue that that's however mostly used as a label to legitimate the government and to obscure what they really are, in the same manner north Korea is formaly named the democratic people's republic of Korea (DPRK). Those countries does/did not operate as communist states the way that Marx and other political theorists imaginend them.

Hjalamanger ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

Hjalamanger ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

Thanks, but what should i get out of this apparat from Soviet and Chinese history? What is it you are trying to say with this?

Hjalamanger ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

Yes i know it's not perfect and the exact positions might not be completely accurate but I still think the overall picture it paints it useful. Maybe we aren't the most democratic countries but we're defently democratic. You can check this whit whatever source you happen to prefere

Hjalamanger ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

They Nordic countries type of socialism may not be a replacement for capitalism (I live in Sweden so I'd know) but works alot more like the type of socialism that's common in Europe.

This terminology might not be on spot but I still think the Nordic countries are what most people would refere to as at least a little bit socialist. Maybe the proper term is social democratic?

who needs imagination when you have algorithms to do the thinking for you? 😜

The trick is to not observe it but to simply glance over it as if you didn't give a f*ck about it and pretend like your simply trying to avoid walking into it. Look right at it and you may hurt it's feelings causing it to brick itself

I don't really think that the author of this book believes the world will "end" this soon but anyways. This is a post apocalyptic dystopia that sets it's scene in Moscow 2033:
the book metro 2033

spoiler about the metro series

In the later books it kinda seems like that it's only Russia that has been nuked out of existence so really the world hasn't ended. But if you just read the first book you would not get to know that

Those are amazing! There so cute 😍

I wounder if we could make a script to pick a random one and use it as a background image? It would be awesome to have those as background images but o don't know if the author would be okay with me using them for that

Please define “we”. This is a international community so you can’t assume that everyone lives in the same country as you.

What's the most interesting traditional or formal politeness behaviour or table manners in your culture? Or for any service personnel, in your restaurant? ( kbin.social )

I love all the ritualized behaviour, secret meanings and unexpected taboos - standing up when someone of higher status stands, elaborate rules for serving and eating, tapping the table to thank the server, never refuse a toast from a superior, stuff like that....

Hjalamanger ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

This is just a small thing and I don’t know if it’s exclusively Swedish (or even done in the entierty of Sweden) but anyways. In the grocery store all customers generally turn all products so that the barcode is facing forward, aka the way that’s the most convenient for the cashier. Partially done to pay respect I guess but also makes the whole thing go faster.

I have seen Gemini before but never tried it. Maybe i will but i do have a few questions first:

  • Is there a Gemini search engine?
  • Is there support for Forms/server side code
  • How big is it? Is there like just a few sites or a few hundred?

The exact probability is something more like 210^-921. Given that it would take around 9 gogol (910^926) years of constantly popping popcorns until that happens. Should we try?

Maybe you should just have something like the DMA in the US to?

non-Euclidean filesystem

I noticed that I only had 5 GiB of free space left today. After quickly deleting some cached files, I tried to figure out what was causing this, but a lot was missing. Every tool gives a different amount of remaining storage space. System Monitor says I’m using 892.2 GiB/2.8 TiB (I don’t even have 2.8 TiB of storage...

A typical quantum entangled hyperbolic non-linear file system, or QEHNLFS for short. This was first described in Einstein’s fourth relativity theory. I states the following:

In any QEHNLFS the perceived storage space (used and unused) may vary depending on the reference frame. All reference frames are equally valid and therefore the absolute storage space of the QEHNLFS is not well defined. QEHNLFSs generally appear around a central supermassive black hole, typically located at /dev/null in the QEHNLFS

If you ask someone for “multiple” of something their almost always going to give you three of that thing (or nothing). In that context multiple is just three and as @CatsGoMOW pointed out, if I use triple I could as well keep going with higher numbers (quadrupole etc)

Hjalamanger OP ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

It’s just me thinking of what I ordered people near me would do. But I’m not a native English speaker so my feel for the language might be wrong; I’m from Sweden (and my mother tongue is Swedish).

Hjalamanger OP ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

Yeah, your probably right; my English ain’t perfect. A few would probably have been better to use as @RainfallSonata pointed out

Hjalamanger OP ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

I’m not a native English speaker so you (and everyone else here) are probably right. I thought it meant the same thing as the Swedish word “flera” whilst the proper translation seems to be “ett flertal”

Mathematically this works just like our number system, your just not used to it

Hjalamanger OP ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

Smart, I like the shorter words. And for the suffixes your basically picking based on the digits position from the left? So you suggest the suffixes:

Place suffix
1 place
4 place
16 place Y
64 place O
256 place A

I believe we’d have to continue a bit longer and maybe also have a suffix for 4th place? I would suggest using both prefixes and suffixes, maybe in this order:

Place suffix prefix
1 place
4 place A
16 place A A
64 place O A
256 place Y A
1024th place O
4096th place A O

… And so on, you can probably see how you could keep going in order to express any number up to 16777216. After that we might have to start using two letter prefixes/suffixes like “la”, “ro” or whatever

Hjalamanger ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

Or you just ban it completely for everything but hunting and regulate that strictly (ofc with exceptions for police and military). This is the way gun laws work in most European countries and most of them are indeed very save places to live in.

Your point here is a typical American one and just not any good. Guns in self defense rarely help anyone and do way more harm when random idiots who suddenly feel a need to kill someone finds themselfs already with a gun in their hand. Not to say that it’s impossible to get your hands on a gun in (for example) Sweden but the price and complications that ce with it do stop a lot of people from doing stupid things.

Hjalamanger ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

Does that include a ban of UBI (universal basic income)? Because that is a idea I do indeed support

Hjalamanger ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

Planes are by far the safest way to travel due to the extremely strict regulations, regulations that don’t exist for other means of transportation

Hjalamanger ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

I’ve never seen anyone do it so I’m pretty sure it’s illegal in all countries were I’ve found myself on a highway. The US and Germany (due to their free speed generally quite weird autobahns) come to mind as countries that might allow it.

Hjalamanger ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

This whole thing is about civilians owning guns. Wether the police should carry guns is a completely different story.

They can’t be trusted

I do personally trust the (Swedish) police. Sweden happens to be the country I live in so I don’t know whether the police in whatever country you live in is trustworthy.

Hjalamanger ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

I think you are missing my point regarding polices/soldiers with guns. I really do not see why their gun owning is at all related to civilian gun owning. They have different motivations to have guns then, for example, my neighbour.

Soldiers need guns to do their job of protecting our country and generally don’t use them against other people in peace times. Here in Sweden I can only remember one incident like 30 years ago were the military misused their permit to own guns.

The police on the other hand use their guns in situations where they end up in dangerous situations due to their work. This happens way more often for them then for a regular person as its their work to handle dangerous, some times armed, persons. Of all the situation were the Swedish police used their guns 2022 in 471 out of 502 cases the just pointed their gun at someone. In 10 cases the shot a warning shot and in 21 cases they shot with the intention to actually hit the target. Four persons was wounded by the shots and two persons died that year. Our policemen isn’t just some random dude with a gun but people who have been trained to handle stressed out situations by other means then just shooting at some one and that’s generally isn’t true for most other people (like my neighbours). Overall the Swedish police seemingly can handle their permit to use guns but that doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t for example racist. But at least they don’t randomly kill people.
I pulled all of the stats for this comment from this report.

If you do trust your neighbors, what does it matter if they have guns?

I live in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. I have a ton of neighbours and I do indeed not trust all of them to own guns.

And regarding your UN report, I guess I’m just a regular Swede. From the article you linked:

We heard that most of the population in Sweden generally has confidence in the police

There ain’t really to much public discussion about racism here in Sweden and when it’s covered in the news it almost never related to the police doing anything wrong. Not because that’s a good but I hope you can now understand why I do trust police.

EDIT: small correction. The 21 cases were the police used their guns against some one includes times were they’ve shot at cars

Hjalamanger ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

So basically you suggest that we get rid of the police and just hope that the general public isn’t just as racist as the police force? Sadly I don’t think that’ll work; while I can’t back that up with statistics I don’t believe that the police is more racist then the general public and so the world wouldn’t be better without them.

I advocate that sort of training for everyone. Teach guns to schoolkids at the same time you’re teaching them to drive.
I also advocate the abolition of police

So you’re an anarchist or what? I don’t believe that anarchy will work in a modern society

Hjalamanger ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

And they also decided to put “not applicable” in the center

Hjalamanger ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

That’s just the feeling I got from your post; making memes online and finding yourself powerless without doing anything. But ofc I can’t back that up…

Sorry for that (:

Hjalamanger ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

a few states here control most of the power here due to the electoral college

Yes I’m indeed aware of that. It’s a way of electiong representatives and it has a lot of implications (most notably the two party system), good and bad. Doesn’t really change things though it’s just a different (and weird) way to do democracy

And everything down to state and local initiatives gets lobbied into the ground by special interests.

Yeah, I have nothing to say about that. It really seems like a big pain but I’m having a really hard time imagining what it’s like since we don’t have that much lobbying here in Sweden, it feels really absurd for me.
