Except neither the entertainment nor the bread is free. I wonder what percentage of the average person's income is spent on food and/or entertainment.

Trying to source this quote, all I could find was this tweet attributing it to politician and former professional athlete Joshua Turek. Interesting if that's correct.

Also, for the sake of putting the text in question here in text instead of a picture of the text:

I wonder if future generations will look back in bewilderment that citizens allowed themselves to be taxed to build sports stadiums that billionaires then charged us to enter for the sake of rooting for millionaires to play children's games whose outcomes distract us from getting robbed by rich people for things just like this.

Though I know it means "et cetera" when reading my brain has always "heard" that word - whether in the context of the word "etc." or the computing /etc - as pronounced "ettick." As in, "you need to edit your ettick f-stab file."

Is that really an enforced rule somewhere, or just one of those loose intentions from the early days of domain names?

If you like boiled eggs, you need a boiled egg timer.

It's a clear "egg" made of heat-tolerant plastic with a color-changing temperature gauge visible inside. You throw it into the pot when boiling eggs and it lets you know when the eggs are soft boiled, medium boiled, or hard boiled. It's very readable even in boiling water, and the results are always perfectly accurate. These things are totally worth the few dollars they cost.

Another bonus of showing them "Corbomite" first is that they won't be wondering what the hell the deal is with that freaky face thing at the end of the closing credits when watching other episodes.

"Darmok" is so far the only Trek episode I've shown my spouse, because she wanted to know what the deal was with a t-shirt I had with that episode's famous line on it. It did the job, she seemed to get into it despite being only vaguely familiar with the show.

"Who Watches the Watchers" is self-contained but you can also show someone "The Drumhead" after they've seen it. Beyond that also being a good episode for newbies as suggested elsewhere in these threads, the callbacks to "Who Watches the Watchers" nicely illustrate how threads from one story can keep affecting and enriching the show's universe.

EA wants to place in-game ads in its full-price AAA games, again ( www.techspot.com )

EA has tried this before, with predictable results. In 2020, EA Sports UFC 4 included full-screen ads for the Amazon Prime series The Boys that would appear during 'Replay' moments. These were absent from the game when it launched, with EA introducing the ads about a month later, thereby preventing them from being highlighted in...

A business model wherein the thing someone makes and sells brings in a profit just by customers buying the thing, without the long tail of continuing to sell the customers' eyeballs to whoever forever after, is not an unreasonable concept. Countless indie games and smaller publishers have managed this for generations and still do.

If EA and the other massive blockbuster publishers can't figure out how to make their business model work in a non-exploitative manner, too damn bad about it. We don't actually need them.

This thing seems to be a later iteration of the Atari Mindlink idea from the 1980s, which presented the illusion of controlling the game with just your thoughts/brain waves/whatever but which was actually just reading the neuromuscular voltage from your forehead (meaning you scrunch your forehead muscles around to control it).

    I created a board game alternative for evil people ( lemmy.today )

Guys, I have something to brag about. After almost a year of hard learning, I finally created my first mobile game! Storiado is a board game alternative that will make you wonder what's wrong with your friends. Play by answering simple questions, mix all the answers, and generate the most twisted story you've ever read. And then...

To use pro-wrestling terminology, this is an obvious "work."

The goal of this setup is to continue to shore Ramaswamy up as one of the "good Republicans" so that those people who still identify as Republicans but who also consider themselves "one of the good Republicans, small government yadda yadda, not one of those bigoted ones!" and are at risk of leaving the party over its overarching fascism can latch onto him in this interview and still keep that R after their names. Meanwhile, the Republicans who agree with Coulter can cheer for her side of this.

The Republican party is more and more openly nazi every day. Stunts like this - including the whole phenomenon of Ramaswamy as their "look we're not racist, we have an Indian friend!" token - are to keep the party's numbers bulked up with enough unsuspecting "decent" people to empower the nazis at the top continue to nazi in all their names.

I’ve [fired a gun] a lot in movies, but there are too many guns in the real world. I know people with guns, and they always say the same thing. “If somebody breaks into my house, I have to be able to defend myself.” But what they’re really saying is, “I hope somebody breaks into my house so I can use this thing.” It’s so wrong.

I loved Max Headroom (the American drama series) as a kid, and am now rewatching it and while there’s the odd bit of 1980s cringe, it still holds way up in a “how the hell did something this hip ever get greenlit on a major network?” sort of way.

My wife is not into cyberpunk dystopia stuff, but she’s watching for the first time with me and doesn’t hate it.

Good luck finding an affordable “dumb” TV. They’re just computer monitors and they cost a hell of a lot more at TV size than most people are able to spend. The smart TVs are so cheap because they are subsidized by the shit vendors paying the manufacturer to load their malware in front of your eyes.

Court Bans Use of 'AI-Enhanced' Video Evidence Because That's Not How AI Works ( gizmodo.com )

A judge in Washington state has blocked video evidence that’s been “AI-enhanced” from being submitted in a triple murder trial. And that’s a good thing, given the fact that too many people seem to think applying an AI filter can give them access to secret visual data.

And, generally speaking, ink is the stuff with a ridiculously draining business model which costs consumers far more than is justified for cartridges which quickly dry out over time even when not in use, while toner is relatively inexpensive stuff which basically lasts forever and keeps just as fresh and usable as the day you bought it.

…one Thursday, nearly two thousand years after one man had been nailed to a tree for saying how great it would be to be nice to people for a change, a girl sitting on her own in a small café in Rickmansworth suddenly realized what it was that had been going wrong all this time, and she finally knew how the world could be made a good and happy place. This time it was right, it would work, and no one would have to get nailed to anything.

Sadly, however, before she could get to a phone to tell anyone about it, a terrible, stupid catastrophe occurred, and the idea was lost forever.
