Then I think this isn't directed towards voters like you. It's directed toward those who say you shouldn't vote for Biden as a protest.

nexguy ,
@nexguy@lemmy.world avatar

Well of course. It's directed towards them but just like almost everything on social media is meant to make those who agree feel better.

Unnecessary politically related comment

There isn't a single non-genocidal candidate. Either they support Israel committing genocide or don't support Ukraine defending itself from genocide.

Uncommitted voters are not apathetic. The Democratic party is ( www.theguardian.com )

What happens in November is up to Biden – it will not be the fault of the protest voter if Trump is elected. The questions remain: does the Democratic party fear Trump as much as we do? And does it value its voters enough to shift away from an approach to the onslaught in Gaza that a majority of Democratic voters are against?

nexguy ,
@nexguy@lemmy.world avatar

It won't be the protest voters fault of Trump is elected but it would be something they could have prevented. Four more years of radical conservative judge appointments would create generations of degradation of women and minority group rights.

nexguy ,
@nexguy@lemmy.world avatar

So then protest voters are just wasting time by not voting since their protest doesn't matter?

They are free to sell to non American companies just fine as long as the new company is not ultimately controlled by the Chinese government.

nexguy ,
@nexguy@lemmy.world avatar

The u.s. still wouldn't control the algorithm even if bytedance sold because they are not required to sell to a u.s. company. As long as the new company isn't controlled by the ccp(or probably also russ, n Korea, iran) the u.s. doesn't care who owns it.

nexguy ,
@nexguy@lemmy.world avatar

U.S. wouldn't be taking over... it could be a New Zealand company for all the u.s. cares.

nexguy ,
@nexguy@lemmy.world avatar

The can sell to non-us companies no problem. Doesn’t have to involve Wallstreet.

nexguy ,
@nexguy@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not saying they would, just saying it doesn’t have to involve Wallstreet.

Non-sensationalized summary from the article:

Although Section 702 authorizes electronic surveillance of non-US people overseas, the official summary of the reauthorization bill notes that "information about US persons may incidentally be acquired by this type of surveillance and subsequently searched or ‘queried’ under certain circumstances.”

The reauthorization bill imposes some new limits on data collection. For example, FBI personnel must obtain prior approval from an FBI supervisor or attorney before making queries about US people. But this provision has an exception allowing such queries without prior approval if “the query could assist in mitigating or eliminating a threat to life or serious bodily harm.”

There are also some new limits on queries involving elected US officials, political candidates, political organizations, media organizations, journalists, and religious groups. There is a prohibition on “the involvement of political appointees in the approval process for such politically sensitive query requests,” and a requirement that the FBI director "establish consequences for noncompliant querying of US person terms, including zero tolerance for willful misconduct.”

They are not banning the content type that tiktok provides, they are banning the foreign authoritarian government control of American user information. If Bytedance Sells tiktok to a business in a non authoritarian state then they no longer care.

Record numbers in the US are homeless. Can cities fine them for sleeping in parks and on sidewalks? ( apnews.com )

The justices on Monday will consider a challenge to rulings from a California-based appeals court that found punishing people for sleeping outside when shelter space is lacking amounts to unconstitutional cruel and unusual punishment....

nexguy ,
@nexguy@lemmy.world avatar

Homelessness is without a doubt a major problem that needs immediate attention but I wish they would give proper context. Homelessness was FAR worse in the 80s so these are in fact not record numbers. Also, take lessons from Mississippi on homelessness. Yes, Mississippi as they only have about 1000 people state wide who are homeless.

nexguy ,
@nexguy@lemmy.world avatar

20 seconds on Google. The US government estimated 200k to 500k homeless in 1987 though this is criticized as a gross underestimate as they did not record it as well as they do today. Regan policies were responsible for a dramatic increase in the mid 80s.

nexguy ,
@nexguy@lemmy.world avatar

The chances of a person being homeless in the mid 80s is much higher than today.

How could someone improve democracy and who would it be?

Edit: weird that I would be down voted for asking who and how to improve democracy.

You didn’t answer who. Who is so much better than Biden that they would be able to do all of this.

Ukraine backers blast ‘double standard’ after allies rush to Israel’s defense ( www.politico.eu )

If the United States and its allies can rush to Israel’s defense in the skies, shooting down dozens of drones and missiles fired by Iran, why can’t they do the same for Ukraine — which has suffered under Russia’s missile attacks for more than two years?...

nexguy ,
@nexguy@lemmy.world avatar

What would Russia’s response be if NATO countries defended Ukraine with missile and drones shot down over Kiev, Levin, Odesa. Not sure they would do anything.

Can homeless people be fined for sleeping outside? A rural Oregon city asks the US Supreme Court ( apnews.com )

The scenes were emblematic of the crisis gripping the small, Oregon mountain town of Grants Pass, where a fierce fight over park space has become a battleground for a much larger, national debate on homelessness that has reached the U.S. Supreme Court....

Sure. West hasn’t said he wants that. But he has said he doesn’t want to help Ukraine defend itself by supporting it which empowers Putin to get what he wants. What incentive does Putin have to give anything back if he didn’t have to?
