Multi-boot utility Ventoy updated to 1.0.98 - Fixes for Arch Linux, KAOS, RHEL9 ( github.com )

Ventoy is an open source tool to create bootable USB drives for ISO/IMG/VHD(x)/WIM/EFI files. With Ventoy, you don't need to format the disk over and over, you just need to copy the disk images to the USB drive and boot them directly. You can have multiple images on the disk and Ventoy will give you a boot menu to select them....

Personally use Ventoy for non-Linux ISOs (ie: Windows), and everything else Linux-y I install through the netboot.xyz ISO image with Ventoy. I rarely need to update my USB stick that way, and most systems I have to deal with have access to the Internet.

Not a bad move, Google already does it for Workspace admins, and GitHub is about to do so for accounts with specific capabilities.

Slack is now using all content, including DMs, to train LLMs ( mastodon.sdf.org )

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/15741608...

 We offer customers a choice around these practices. If you want to exclude your Customer Data from helping to train Slack global models, you can opt out. If you opt out, Customer Data on your workspace will only be used to improve the experience on your own workspace and you will still enjoy all of the benefits of our globally trained Al/ML models without contributing to the underlying models.

You can even use Markdown file and convert it dynamically to HTML using javascript through Markdeep by just dropping

<!-- Markdeep: --><style class="fallback">body{visibility:hidden;white-space:pre;font-family:monospace}</style><script src="markdeep.min.js"></script><script src="https://casual-effects.com/markdeep/latest/markdeep.min.js?"></script><script>window.alreadyProcessedMarkdeep||(document.body.style.visibility="visible")</script>

at the end of the markdown file. It makes it dead simple to update using a text editor later on and to host on a static website.

1000+ Firefox for Android extensions now available – Mozilla Add-ons Community Blog ( blog.mozilla.org )

The new open ecosystem of extensions on Firefox for Android launched in December with just over 400 extensions. Less than five months later we’ve surpassed 1,000 Firefox for Android extensions. That’s an impressive achievement by this developer community! It’s exciting to see so many developers embrace the opportunity to...

At that price point not really, and there is definitely going to be some tradeoffs required between power vs consumption vs price.

Why every TOTP app default uses SHA-1 hash encryption?

I use Aegis as my 2fa. Today on new token creation I observed that there's hash function set to SHA-1, later checked all my tokens and the result is same type of encryption used for all. So I have edited all my tokens to SHA-256 as a result my totp doesn't authenticate. Do I have to rescan my tokens for updating to SHA-256 or...

mp3 ,
@mp3@lemmy.ca avatar

And some TOTP apps don't interpret the algorithm parameter correctly, which makes it safer to go with the default SHA-1.

Lemmy in fact was using SHA-256 for its earlier TOTP implementation and reverted back to SHA-1 since some people locked themselves out due to poor support in some TOTP app (among other issues, another was that the activation workflow never asked you to confirm the code you enrolled was working and generating the correct code...).

Would Lemmy Benefit from Implementing Polls? ( slrpnk.net )

A popular way of dealing with discussions, and familiar to most people, I assume. As far as I see it, adding a poll system to Lemmy is a good way to enhance user engagement. I'm not really aware if this has been a topic before or not, tried looking it up but didn't see much juice on the topic, so thought I'd spark it up....

mp3 ,
@mp3@lemmy.ca avatar

I'd like to see that happen, especially if it comes with the following options to restrict the poll:

  • by time
  • by instance
  • by existing users at the time of the poll's creation
  • single choice, multiple choices, ranked choice

IMO talking about Jedi, Sith and the Force too much dilutes their importance.

They're indeed central to the story, but they're also extremely rare, to a point where most people in the Star Wars universe believe the Jedi are a myth which may not even be real. Seeing a Jedi in action would be like seeing the Messiah in the flesh.

Who else than a large corp with sufficient funding can develop and market lab-grown meat anyway? Of course this kind of stuff will come from a large corp at first. Is he willing to launch a state-owned lab to fund it publicly? Yeah, I didn't think so.

It's not like people will jump at the opportunity to buy some backyard-shed-grown meat today, as appetizing that might sound.

Car hoods are getting higher and higher, which makes hitting a pedestrian much more lethal than before.

The shape of smaller (sane) car is made specifically to be aerodynamic, and to also ensure the impact mostly happens at the legs and raise the pedestrian to minimize damage and hopefully avoid running over them. Those mastodons on the streets are insane.
