Why am I not surprised they found a way to blame us for it?

PseudorandomNoise ,
@PseudorandomNoise@lemmy.world avatar

Except no because the fact that he's President while campaigning still matters. It absolutely affects how he behaves.

Let's also go after the folks in the plastics industry who intentionally misled the entire country into thinking their products were recyclable. Even now they use that symbol that was designed to look like the recycle symbol but it just tells you which type of plastic it is.

There’s some old Reddit posts like this too. Advice threads where the person who posted a solution went back and overwrote their comments during the boycott last year. I know why they did it but we still lost some information in the grand scheme of things.

The judge at Friday’s sentencing told the court that once he completes his prison sentence, DePape will be deported back to Canada by ICE immigration officials.

Good, I was gonna ask if were booting him out because we should.

Article says he’s to be deported after his sentence though.

Do you recall any of the names? I'd love to read those papers and see how effective it was. Depending on the city and the route, people might have no choice but to go over a bridge like that regardless of traffic reports.

It’s unchecked because customers don’t really care. When is the last time there was a boycott of a game due to how the developers are treated?

Does that really matter? The owner of a given instance can still choose to sell everything on their server, no?

You know it’s serious when you’ve set up a whole new subdomain for this one big!

PseudorandomNoise ,
@PseudorandomNoise@lemmy.world avatar

Oh I know it’s minimal effort to spin one up, especially for a static page. It’s just funny that that’s how this goes now.

parse the astronomical amounts of personal data corporations and governments have been collecting for the last 20 years

Always the plan, funnily enough. They didn't necessarily know what they'd need the data for, just knew it was valuable and should be sucked up and saved until the opportunity presented itself.

Senators urge $32 billion in emergency spending on AI after finishing yearlong review ( apnews.com )

A bipartisan group of four senators led by Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is recommending that Congress spend at least $32 billion over the next three years to develop artificial intelligence and place safeguards around it, writing in a new report released Wednesday that the U.S. needs to “harness the opportunities and address...

Keyword searches stopped being useful years ago. Every site owner stuffed every single word they could think of into that field making the whole thing effectively useless.

It’s like how they’re now returning results stuffed to the brim with AI-written crap. Google can only show what’s on the web and that’s all the web is now.

Much cheaper to have an external company do these things sometimes

It’s bosses who are sick of Teams meetings. “You just can’t collaborate like you can in an office setting” is what I heard most during my job hunt.

I’d trust a wish.com raft more than that thing

We saw it at Blizzard but the woman they hired left within a year because she was paid less than her male counterpart.

What’s the reason? Using more electricity than whole nations just to move some money around hardly seems worth the cost.

PseudorandomNoise ,
@PseudorandomNoise@lemmy.world avatar

At the end of the day I don't think this really changes the conversation substantially (if at all), but it's always important to ensure the right facts are out there for discussion

You got any kind of source on that extra 10k of unidentified bodies? That’s a big number to just throw around.

He’s commenting on bad reporting, and in particular a confusion that no one in this thread here seems to be making.

The text of the constitution only mentions being 35 "to serve". Nothing at all about that having to be true during the election.

PseudorandomNoise ,
@PseudorandomNoise@lemmy.world avatar

Yes but it still looks bad because it’s saying “you can talk about it, but only if you say nice things”. A full embargo would’ve made more sense and wouldn’t have raised any eyebrows. This current contract leads me to believe it’s a shit game.

They're much more likely to spend time on the easy wins than on anything that'll take time and money to fight in court. Since these folks aren't redistributing any of Nintendo's copyrighted content, it's not as simple of a takedown as an emulator that includes private keys.

This is my server and about 28GB sits unused. Just in case I might want to run a new VM or something... 🤣

Laziness, porn addiction and maliciousness have been powered by worse energy sources for over a century. But I do agree that power efficiency should be the focus before we go to the "insanely fast scale-up" phase.

Windows aint free, which just makes it that much worse!

Even if he wins he won't accept any states he lost that he thought he should've won. I could absolutely see a situation where Trump sues one of the Secretaries of State and tries to pull all the same shit he did in Georgia (which he has yet to be punished for, assuming he ever will be)

PseudorandomNoise ,
@PseudorandomNoise@lemmy.world avatar

They're just using antisemitism as a convenient excuse to regulate schools further. Dragging admins before Congress is not what Jews are asking for right now.

The password crackdown will work, sadly. However is it going to be enough to make up for the fact that Disney's got nothing right now except shitting out sequels?

PseudorandomNoise ,
@PseudorandomNoise@lemmy.world avatar

How many additional people sign up when these password sharing crackdowns happen?

Several million

Which every company saw, and that's why they're all gonna do this too.

PseudorandomNoise ,
@PseudorandomNoise@lemmy.world avatar

The second part of your post is too vague and subjective to comment on. Are accountants not supposed to be happy with an additional $59 million in subscription revenue? That's all in a 3-month period.

And even if not, note the rest of the article. They're not solely cracking down on password sharing, the service is getting more expensive too. They all are. Disney is not charting new territory with any of this.

PseudorandomNoise ,
@PseudorandomNoise@lemmy.world avatar

It's a win-win situation for the streaming companies no matter what. The people who weren't paying will either stop watching entirely (no longer costing Disney anything) or they pay up and become an additional subscriber. It doesn't matter if it's a small increase in profits or not, it's still an increase so it's happening.

You can scroll back through older social media posts from when Netflix announced this. How many folks said they were done? How much did that cost Netflix in the end? Literally nothing!

PseudorandomNoise ,
@PseudorandomNoise@lemmy.world avatar

That remains to be seen here. Netflix was all "love is sharing your password" and now they're "fuck you pay up" and they're being rewarded with millions of subs.

I get where you're coming from but so far there's no data to back up what you're saying.

PseudorandomNoise ,
@PseudorandomNoise@lemmy.world avatar

2 of those came out in 2020 and Raya was still during COVID, so it's really not fair to lump those in. I was mostly talking about the movies they released just last year, their big 100th year. Indy 5, Wish, The Marvels, Ant-Man 3. None of them did as well as Disney needed.

Meanwhile movies about long-established toys like Mario and Barbie each made a billion+, and people were willing to go see a 3-hour docu-drama about a scientist. So we know it's not the "people don't go to the theaters anymore" excuse. People just aren't getting dressed to watch crap and that's what Disney's been known for lately.

Liberal icon Bernie Sanders is running for Senate reelection, squelching retirement rumors ( apnews.com )

Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont announced Monday he will run for reelection this year, squelching speculation that the 82-year-old progressive icon might retire at a time when the Democratic Party is anxious about the advancing age of its top leaders....

PseudorandomNoise ,
@PseudorandomNoise@lemmy.world avatar

I do. I blame him. How are we supposed to cultivate the next generation of progressive leadership when the previous one refuses to leave?

And I don't care if it’s ageist. 80 year olds have no business being in positions this important. I’m sick of seeing people being literally wheeled into the Senate chambers to cast votes before being sent back to a hospital.

PseudorandomNoise ,
@PseudorandomNoise@lemmy.world avatar

He's a Senator. This doesn't just affect Vermont. Having yet another Senator over the age of 85 will absolutely make a difference to me! I just can't vote on it because I live in Ohio.

PseudorandomNoise ,
@PseudorandomNoise@lemmy.world avatar

It’s Vermont. How likely is it that a republican’s going to be elected if he doesn’t run? I can’t even process why Bernie wants to be working when he’s 88 but that’s what he’s setting himself up for.

I don’t like being governed by people who are 40 years my senior. Bernie is no exception. Time to pass the torch.

PseudorandomNoise ,
@PseudorandomNoise@lemmy.world avatar

Ok but the other side of this argument is that folks like Chuck Grasley and Mitch McConnell won’t leave either.

I’m really just over the idea of 80 year olds being our leaders, and I’m not the only one who feels that way.

PseudorandomNoise ,
@PseudorandomNoise@lemmy.world avatar

OK so what's the logical conclusion here? Bernie has to stay in office until he literally dies because his seat might go to a Democrat?

PseudorandomNoise ,
@PseudorandomNoise@lemmy.world avatar

The very fact that you can think of people who qualify as the new guard just tells me that Bernie has more of a legacy in place than he might think. He went from giving speeches to completely empty chambers to there being an entire 'squad' of politicians that share his views. That is progress. That is a major accomplishment that he should be thrilled about!

I get that people like him, and I'm sure he doesn't feel like he's too old, but I'm firmly of the mind that age limits in government are necessary. Being a spry 82-year-old is still being an 82-year-old. He can find a progressive millenial or gen z-er in the state of Vermont to throw his weight behind for the future. If he can't, well frankly that's his fault and not a valid excuse to be yet another dinosaur clinging to power.

PseudorandomNoise ,
@PseudorandomNoise@lemmy.world avatar

He pretty much said that exactly. Told people days ago that Israel was gonna raid Rafah regardless of any ceasefire deal. Surprised talks didn't break down right then and there.

It's not difficult at all, these companies just have no reason to do it that way. They force you to agree to their terms before you can use the website at all, which means they're in a much better position to make demands. We can't counter with anything, it's just "agree that we own this copy of your content".

And most of us agree to it because we have no way of knowing that someday our content might actually be worth something.
