Why is replacement for home device controls so complicated?

I recently learned about Home Assistant here on Lemmy. It looks like a replacement for Google Home, etc. However, it requires an entire hardware installation. Proprietary products just use a simple app to manage and control devices, so can someone explain why a pretty robust dedicated device is necessary as a replacement? The...

Get any old enterprise workstation (they practically give Dells away for free) and get to know Docker.

Using multiple Pis for single applications is a fool's errand - my Optiplex was free and it is running ~30 containers with plenty of room to breathe.

Next tech is probably going to be dedicated GPUs or similar to run personalized AI

ExplorerPatcher + Open-Shell = ❤️

funkajunk ,
@funkajunk@lemm.ee avatar

To be fair, you can use just a couple open source tools like ExplorerPatcher and Open-Shell to vastly improve the UX.

I’d actually say it’s easier to get a modern environment in Windows 11 as it natively has a tabbed file manager and terminal.

I say this as someone who has to use Windows, versus wanting to use Windows.

sketchy third party apps

I was replying mostly about the “sketchy” comment. The apps I mentioned are open source, and are among the most popular programs for anyone customizing Windows - maybe even top 5.

If you’re not a Windows user, then yeah, why would you personally need to know of them? Much like the average Windows user would not be able to even tell you what ls and cat are for. Doesn’t make those tools any less valid.

ionos.com is $1/month and you can use external domain names. That plan includes the cost of a domain name as well, so you can transfer the external domain over if you really like it.

each plugin needs its own docker container.

What are you talking about? This is simply not true.

Depends on how the partitions are arranged. I’m assuming your Windows is first (going left to right), then probably your boot partition, then your main ext4, and then maybe a swap?

Definitely shrink the windows partition using disk management, but then in Linux you can clone your boot partition to the beginning of the free space, delete the old boot, and then expand the ext4. You don’t HAVE to do it from a live environment, but it is the safest.

I didn’t google much, but this seems about right: www.baeldung.com/linux/resize-partitions

By default it’s only for the the same account, but you can change it in the download settings to allow transfers to “Steam Friends” or “Anyone”.

Yeah, I mostly use Linux. Unfortunately, certain games only run on Windows and you’re stuck using it if you want to play those titles.

This device looks to be supported by the custom firmware project over here: mrchromebox.tech

Basically it allows you to replace the stock firmware and just run regular ol’ Linux, entirely replacing ChromeOS.

There’s also a pretty good video outlining most of the process here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6oyqrrXTLM

I used archinstall to setup my laptop with Gnome and only use pamac-nosnap for package management (flatpak is fine, but fuck snaps).

I made the most noob Arch install ever and I love it.

I figured out how to make IPTV as easy as using Netflix so you dont have to ( lemmy.myserv.one )

Disclaimer: Obviously this is for educational purposes only. I would personally never use my internet connection for anything illegal at all. I simply tested the below setup then deleted everything out of pure interest to understand how things worked and do not use any IPTV service. I love paying Netflix and other streaming...

A CMS is way overkill for what you need.

I suggest something like Hugo, with plenty of templates available and even the ability to host it out of Github, it’s a pretty good option.

I’m a sysadmin and do most everything in Powershell, there’s very few things that I need a GUI for.

If it’s something not documented, I usually run the program on a test bench while using procmon, that will show me which registry key or config file needs to be modified, which can then be done from the command line.
