For me it's a pattern of "Ctrl+t" to open a new tab and then I search "my interesting query". After that, I use "shift+tab" or "Ctrl+shift+tab" to navigate between tabs. Rinse and repeat until I get tired.

I don't like searching in my current tab because I don't want to lose the info I have.

We're getting closer and closer to wrapping back around and just having community. Just remove the sex aspect and boom you got a community going.

Why are the clouds inverted? The cloud shape is black and the moon is visible inside it, but it seems super clear that the purple part has too many sharp edges to be a cloud? Therefore the black shape is a cloud? It's just weird looking. Also the garbage men seem ancillary.

Weird artistic choices.

[Serious] Why do so many people seem to hate veganism?

Seen a lot of posts on Lemmy with vegan-adjacent sentiments but the comments are typically very critical of vegan ideas, even when they don't come from vegans themselves. Why is this topic in particular so polarising on the internet? Especially since unlike politics for example, it seems like people don't really get upset by it...

captainjaneway ,
@captainjaneway@lemmy.world avatar

There in lies the rub, though. Most vegans are vegan for a moral reason that they believe applies to you:

  • Animals deserve life / don't deserve livestock conditions
  • "Growing" meat is speeding up global warming compared to growing crop

There are more fringe reasons for veganism such as: diet, health, etc. But those aren't relevant to the point I'm making.

"Live and let live" doesn't apply to situations where we're talking about global warming or the abuse of animals. Most vegans are trying to educate others and - yeah - they probably vote for things that would result in more expensive meat or less meat being available in your local markets. I believe most vegans are hoping their efforts will slow global warming and provide better living conditions for livestock.

I'm not trying to sit on a moral podium here and judge. I eat meat too. I'm not vegan. Though I've tried to reduce how much meat I eat in yet another small, feckless, civilian effort to slow global warming. All I'm saying is: I sympathize with people who want to improve the world and I understand why they spend time and effort talking about being vegan.

But meat in america is cheaper than the vegan stuff and definitely tastier. So it's hard for us to meaningfully change.

captainjaneway ,
@captainjaneway@lemmy.world avatar

I was talking about meat replacements but I put tofu in that category as well because I don't have a lot of experience with tofu outside of "we have this instead of meat".

Vegan food is cheaper in America, for sure. Beans, veg (some) and rice are cheap. However fruit is expensive.

But the alternatives to meat are not cheap: tofu is like $5/lb compared to chicken which can be as low as $2.99/lb. Steak is expensive in America, but it can be close to the cost of tofu. It's definitely cheaper than the steak-alternatives like beyond meat.

While you might find meat replacements to be unnecessary, most Americans (myself included) struggle. 90% of the meals I used to eat were some variation of: protein (meat/chicken/fish), plus a veggie, plus a carb (rice/bread). That was the basic dinner. It has a nice ratio of protein to carb. It was tasty (to me at least) and the cost wasn't too bad.

I'm guessing I'm not alone, culturally. It's not like you can fry up two slabs of tofu and just call it a day. Tofu is just different. It doesn't cook the same and it doesn't taste the same. I cook tofu at least once a week, but I treat it very differently.

It's just not easy for Americans to justify going vegan. It's culturally very different and - if you want to stay within the culture - it's expensive.

But that's why I always advocate for meat reduction, not replacement. Eat more vegetables. Try other dinners. Etc. But most Americans are remiss to be told what to do.

I didn't until apps started breaking. The snap version of steam, Firefox, and Unity (I think?) all started to have issues. When I googled around people would often ask "deb or snap"? I uninstalled the snap packages and installed the deb packages and most of my issues went away.

I ultimately switched to Linux Mint because I kept having stability issues and I was just desperate for a solution. But snap was not a great experience for me.

Dyslexia is broader than you're thinking. Struggling to spell, read, or write can all be signs of dyslexia: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/dyslexia/symptoms-causes/syc-20353552

Scroll down to school age/teen symptoms for such examples.

Thermostats are easy to change out. So this isn't a huge deal. But I don't love the idea that tech isn't built to be self-hosted or maintained in any meaningful way. If you're not shipping an open source version of your software when you close up, you're an asshole.

Yeah, self hosting isn't for most lay people if it's just a GitHub repo. But GitHub repos quickly become adopted by nerds like me who build tooling around it that eventually let lay people self host software with the click of a button.

captainjaneway ,
@captainjaneway@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah the majority do it and I think it's bad.

I just heard about Brazilian Butt Lifts which is a procedure where they take fat deposits from somewhere on your body and place it in your butt?

My question is once this procedure has been completed and say the person really got into some heavy cardio and thus were burning a lot of fat would the body be able to burn the fat that was moved to the buttocks or does it not have the associated blood vessels to enable this?...

captainjaneway ,
@captainjaneway@lemmy.world avatar

What about ketosis? Are ketones a legit way to remove fat?

It's not just the boiling process. The alcohol in beer is anti-bacterial which allows the water to remain safer to drink for longer.

It wasn't beer in many cases. Grog is basically rum, water, and limes/citrus which help sailors prevent scurvy whilst also protecting them from bacterial infections. I don't believe they boiled the water at all in that case. I believe it was just mixed all together.

Great examples are already in the thread, but generally speaking the answer should be "no". Smart phones are just slow at typing. In the case of a smart phone, hitting a button is far faster than typing a command. Not to mention our devices aren't really being used for file management, tooling, complex work, etc. So it doesn't even make sense to have a command line unless you're a huge unix fan or if you are doing something quite niche. And in that case, I recommend just connecting via adb.

captainjaneway ,
@captainjaneway@lemmy.world avatar

I see. Well without a command line, I wouldn't call it a terminal. I think you just want tooling to be available on an Android? It would probably look like a button or series of buttons on an app. Maybe you could connect the dots between them to insinuate a pipe? E.g., you have a "mv" button and a "file" button. When you drag from mv -> file you could maybe kick off a process that moves the file. Maybe it would prompt you for other arguments like destination? I suppose this theoretical app could allow people to install additional tooling and make their own custom commands.

But I just feel like a button UI for these kinds of things will always be awkward. If you don't have a keyboard/terminal interface, it's hard to implement anything that would even behave like terminals in terms of functionality.

Open source e reader ( lemmy.ml )

I recently got a Sony prs 600 e reader from 2009. The battery is at the end of its life (It lasts about 3 days with heavy reading, and a couple weeks without reading). No backlight, no Wi-Fi, just an SD card that I can load epub files and small PDFs. The screen is slow and the contrast isn’t the best. The “touch screen” is...

Watch a full screen movie while you do something on another monitor. Virtual desktops can’t do that.

captainjaneway ,
@captainjaneway@lemmy.world avatar

Full screen

captainjaneway ,
@captainjaneway@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah I can do both. Most movies are dialogue forward so I’m not always watching the screen. And then when there is a break in my game (loading screens, waiting for something to happen, mindless tasks) I can watch the screen. I only do it with games like Minecraft, Satisfactory, Cities Skylines, etc.

captainjaneway ,
@captainjaneway@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah I guess you could do something completely different than what I said.

captainjaneway ,
@captainjaneway@lemmy.world avatar

Oh yeah for sure I could use virtual desktops in addition. But a single monitor doesn’t accomplish what I said. Hence why I brought it up as a counter point.

did you even read the full thread which provides the context you’re neglecting?

No.

Anything “salad” where the salad includes tuna, mayo, or egg. I can’t handle it. I don’t know why. Egg salad. Tuna salad. 🤢

I like salad. I like eggs. I like tuna somewhat. I like mayo somewhat. But any of those weird combinations make me sick.

Why are Asian products so often wrapped in really *thick* plastics?

I live in Europe but sometimes shop at Asian supermarkets here. One of the things I notice with almost everything I buy there is that plastic packaging feels a lot thicker than that on European products. Is there a rational reason for this? Are plastics simply cheaper? Or do people worry more that products might spoil? Are these...

<span style="color:#323232;">#moustache {
</span><span style="color:#323232;">  position: absolute;
</span><span style="color:#323232;">  bottom: 10px;
</span><span style="color:#323232;">  margin: 0 auto;
</span><span style="color:#323232;">}
</span>

If that doesn’t work:

<span style="color:#323232;">#moustache {
</span><span style="color:#323232;">  position: absolute;
</span><span style="color:#323232;">  bottom: 10px;
</span><span style="color:#323232;">  left: 50%;
</span><span style="color:#323232;">  transform: translateX(-50%);
</span><span style="color:#323232;">}
</span>

Relative positioning is preferred but not always available if the parent face is positioned absolutely.

Edit: adjusted bottom from 0 -> 10px since 0 would be at the bottom of the chin but there is obviously some padding to bring it nearer the lip

Lock Screen Shortcuts Too Sensitive

When I got my Pixel 8 Pro, which I generally love, and Lock Screen Shortcuts were a new thing, I configured on for flashlight and one for DND. At first, I felt like the buttons weren’t sensitive enough and they were difficult to activate unless I got my finger JUST right, didn’t move, and held it the perfect amount of time....

captainjaneway ,
@captainjaneway@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve had that problem. The craziest thing about this is the pain. Most of the time, the reason I discover my flashlight turned on is I feel a dull burning sensation on my thigh. I always think “huh, that’s annoying. Must be a random aberration on my skin like a zit or a bug bite”. But the burning grows hotter until eventually I either pull my phone out to feel the spot on my thigh or I go to the bathroom to check. I swear it’s happened to me a half dozen times or so by now.

It’s not a big deal. The burning isn’t burning. Just uncomfortable having a bright LED on my skin for that long.

Yeah my plan (dream) has always been like this:

  • Use the internet while I have it (assuming people just all disappear suddenly) to download survival guides, solar panel repair/installation PDFs, maps, etc. Anything I can think of, I’ll download
  • Gas only lasts so long. I can use chemicals that extend it, but it’s definitely limited. I’d start with a gas powered truck and eventually move into electric vehicles. Batteries aren’t forever either… But I’d try.
  • I’d move to a warm, temperate climate
  • I’d find a building that claims it is powered by solar panels most of the year. I’d use that as my home
  • I’d immediately begin trying to farm. I have a black thumb so this would take me some years to get done correctly. But I’d hopefully have some potatoes and grain growing by the end of a year
  • In the meantime, I might find things to occupy my time such as: finding videogames to play, raising chickens, fishing, collecting guns/ammo, collecting books to preserve, storing solar panels, backup equipment, etc.

My end goal would be to survive as long as I’m happy. I’m pretty introverted so that would last a while. I’d use animals to keep me company. I believe nature would take us over pretty quickly. It would be hard to maintain the house, solar, etc. forever. But if I could, I would.

My wife and I already do a lot of foraging in our area and we have several guides for edible food. We also do some canning and prepping for disasters.

I don’t think a disaster would be a picnic. People are the problem. But if they disappeared suddenly, I think it would be pretty livable.

But yeah the adults should have known better. In addition, they should have at least been wise enough to not risk children. They are weaker, smaller, and more susceptible to dying from those things.

I feel bad for the children and their families.

Those are dope. I think it’s funny that the top comic has shadows always under the character. It exposes something about the drawing style the artist uses. It’s like the character is the origin of the rest of the scene: lights, setting, etc. I’m sure they just didn’t think too hard about it but it’s interesting.

Edit’: actually, technically, it looks like the lamp would cast that shadow. So it kind of makes sense lol
