Performers at Disneyland theme park in Anaheim voted overwhelmingly in favor of unionizing in an election this week, the National Labor Relations Board announced Sunday. They will be members of the Actors’ Equity Association, the same union that represents performers and stage managers at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

The election at the theme park involved more than 1,700 employees in the character and parade departments. The vote count was 953 in favor of unionizing and 258 against it, according to a board spokesperson.

Actors’ Equity said in a statement that those workers had been an “exception” among the heavily unionized workforce at Disneyland “until now.”

“I couldn’t walk away from the pen and ink thing,” says John Evelyn, creator of The Collage Atlas, a dreamlike storybook adventure recently released on Steam. The entire game is hand drawn, from tiny flowers and insects to huge buildings and the clouds that float over them. Exploring this world unwraps its dreamlike story, with environments folding out in response to your approach.

“I had been drawing for many years before that [
] and I’d always draw with ink straight away, without any kind of prior pencil work or sketching,” he says. “I liked all the incidental details and the accidents that come out along the way.” He compares it to improv music — “actually, sometimes it goes horribly wrong!” — but says that the feeling of getting into a stride and being surprised by unexpected outcomes was important to the whole game.

It’s because of this that the art style underpins the rest of the experience. Where individual pieces of game art can fall into the background, The Collage Atlas requests your attention to detail — and rewards it. At the very start of the game, a pinwheel appears from a grassy plain; look at it, and it begins spinning. It was one of the first things that Evelyn created, for what was originally an app meant to accompany a picture book.

Sticky trick: new glue spray kills plant pests without chemicals ( www.theguardian.com )

The insect glue, produced from edible oils, was inspired by plants such as sundews that use the strategy to capture their prey. A key advantage of physical pesticides over toxic pesticides is that pests are highly unlikely to evolve resistance, as this would require them to develop much larger and stronger bodies, while bigger...

There are plenty of ways we shorten a specific phrase that renders it general but still understand it as the specific version.

The word “chemicals” is rarely misunderstood when used this way. Colloquially, many/most people mean “harmful chemicals” when they say it.

Is there room for misunderstanding? Yes. Is that a problem? Not any bigger than most problems with using spoken/written language to communicate.

You don’t come off as wise when you point this inaccuracy out, and It doesn’t invalidate the whole article.

Well “technically correct” is the best kind of correct, so I’ll agree.

Opts out?

Look, if we’re going to have draconian copyright laws, then we should at least be able to count on works being used without permission for AI to be verboten like all the other uses.

It doesn't have a name yet, but it's described on Gilbert's Terrible Toybox website as "classic Zelda meets Diablo meets Thimbleweed Park."

Gilbert's been posting about his new game on Mastodon (via Time Extension) since early 2024, but it's gone largely unnoticed until just recently. In February, he shared an image of a whiteboard rough-out of the opening area and quests, and a little bit of stats work; from there, he's posted a few more in-progress images, along with some brief thoughts about his process.

‘My whole library is wiped out’: what it means to own movies and TV in the age of streaming services ( www.theguardian.com )

*What rights do you have to the digital movies, TV shows and music you buy online? That question was on the minds of Telstra TV Box Office customers this month after the company announced it would shut down the service in June. Customers were told that unless they moved over to another service, Fetch, they would no longer be...

What are the most private social media platforms?

I've been feeling uneasy about the privacy implications of using Lemmy and similar platforms. The ability for anyone to view your entire posting history feels to me like publicly sharing my browser history. In contrast, most other social media platforms allow you to limit your feed visibility to just friends or followers....

News / Plaza: Nintendo is discontinuing Twitter sharing support

If you've wanted to post some inkredible drawings to the plaza, you might have noticed that you can't because you don't have a account.

This is now changing from June 11th @ 1am BST, where you will be officially able to post to the plaza again as the sharing function will instead go directly to Nintendo servers!

is also affected by the change, and it looks like plaza posts will become unavailable after June 11th. The only other game that seems to be affected is the Smash World section in the NSO app for .

So yeah, hardware is hard. But there are a lot of passionate people working on making it more accessible and transparent, tearing down the walls around technical secrecy. We’ve been saying it for years: Your devices don’t have to be incomprehensible, you don’t need to be a certified expert to figure out how it works. Understanding empowers tinkering and we need more tinkerers.

It would be much better if the hypocrisy was pointed out in the article. Republicans are responsible for repeatedly taking away protections and supports for the most vulnerable in our society. And most of their voters don’t know or don’t care as long as they’re hurting the right people. This wearing of diapers is a mockery of support for people with disabilities.
