"Every time we use an electronic device like a computer, a phone, or even a washing machine, we are using energy to power the device; and depending on how that energy is generated, this can result in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions." https://huggingface.co/blog/sasha/energy-star-ai-proposal
There is no "depending". All energy systems are polluting, CO2 generating and environmentally destructive.
It takes coal to make silicon.
Renewable, green, clean energy is a perfect example of greenwashing
And, posting consumes even more energy - propagation and replication to lots of servers on a federated decentralized network.
Though, every time we upgrade a device for a negligible gain of performance, even more emissions were produced in the manufacturing, than will be saved by a little bit better energy efficiency of the new device.
I’m not on TikTok but this account alone is almost enough to make me want to join. This dude is giving a real, unvarnished look at what truckers go through and the ridiculous wages they are being asked to work for. Fascinating, infuriating, hilarious: https://www.tiktok.com/@truckershaderoom
In case you missed it, Mastodon has an optional Tweetdeck-style multi-column interface which you can use on a computer or tablet in horizontal mode. Here's how to activate and use it:
Got an email today from a very smart computer science professor who is totally flummoxed by the #Mastodon signup flow. He tried to follow it based on what Mastodon tells him (the standard verbiage) at my site after reading one of my posts via a URL, and despite creating several accounts at other sites doesn't understand how to use any of it. This is a smart guy. The onboarding and basic explanations situation is still a mess.
I'm voting for Joe Biden in November and intend to continue donating to help him get reelected because: (1) the U.S. is in much better shape now than it was under the former president; and (2) many of the things that could be better (e.g., the makeup of the Supreme Court) are a direct result of the last president being in office.
No caveats.
No "even though..."
The rest of you can vote however you like, but my mind is made up.
In case you missed it, Mastodon's search system has lots of "operators", words you can include in a search to narrow down the results. For example to just show your own posts include from:me in your search.
There is a complete list of operators plus instructions for how to to use them at:
You can use several operators at once to narrow searches further. You can also use a minus sign in front of an operator to exclude certain types of results.
little #mastodon protip: due to how posts federate there's no guarantee someone will see a link/video preview when they see your post, especially on small servers. this means that you'll probably want to add some kind of relevant description in the post where you're posting the link, like repeating the headline or quoting a relevant excerpt
"ChatGPT consumes a lot of energy in the process, up to 25 times more than a Google search. Additionally, a lot of water is also used in cooling for the servers that run all that software. Per conversation of about 20 to 50 queries, half a litre of water evaporates – a small bottle, in other words."
AI is predicted to consume twice as much energy as the whole of France by 2030
Training GPT3, took 1,287 MWh (Megawatt hours) of electricity.
I do wonder why some people feel the need to #insult others like "fuck tech bros" etc. Seems #unnecessary.
In the end most, if not all, #energy slurping services keep existing because of users. Including "social media" like X, Face**, etc and yes even #Mastodon & the #Fediverse with its glorious cat pics..
Ya know...I didn't think about it until now, but it's kinda wild that the BlueSky bridge was REQUIRED to be "opt-in" by a massive amount of Fedi which just runs like a normal instance runs.
However, we currently have the Momostr.pink relay that bridges to Nostr with no such "opt-in" ridiculousness and Nostr doesn't even have "deletes" at all. You post something, it's there. No going back.
I guess the....6 instances that block it felt the same as the folks that hated on the BlueSky bridge but they decided to use the actual tool they were allotted in every such case, the BLOCK button....
So, why is a Nostr, no delete, opt out bridge, more admissible than a BlueSky, normal deletes, opt out bridge?🤨
I am now more confused than ever about the mindsets of people here.
I genuinely want to know if there's a reason one should be allowed and not the other, if there is one...😬
Lol. Just found a workaround for replies not showing up on followers timelines. Just boost the reply yourself!🤣
Idk why I didn't think of this. I guess some would find it annoying to see I boost my own posts, but I wouldn't have to do it that way if it was shown to my followers in the first place!🤦♂️
All in all, I found a temporary solution until the issue is somehow worked around down the line...🤷♂️
I really hope we can get some good people from Threads to move over before Meta starts to do even more untrustworthy things.
Besides the absolutely absurdly move of following and pushing a fake"Fediverse" account that makes people think Fediverse is a single entity or organization, they've already started discussions about expansions to AP to allow platforms to support ads and other shitty ways of monetization.
Fedi needs to make money to survive, I know that. I am behind that, but ads are the shadiest of all the monetization methods because of tracking. Nobody wants to be tracked no matter how "innocent" their activities are.
They've been REALLY quiet since activating AP on their end in a seemingly bad faith move to make the Fediverse seem "useless and pointless to use" by forcing users to educate themselves on the Fediverse if they even know it exists while also making the option to turn it on obscenely hard to locate from normal use.
All in all, I'm VERY skeptical of Meta's intentions and don't really think they'll end up fully federating in the end becuase "why enable a feature that a wide number of our users think is a useless feature?". I feel right now is as far as they're gonna go with it, maybe worldwide, but still one way because that benefits them, not us, and they won't push a feature that people think is useless.
Obviously this is intentional bad faith tactics, but they still have time to prove me wrong and I really hope they do. I really really hope one day we get full federation, but I would be very delusional to have high hopes that such a thing will ever occur given this week's revelations.🤦♂️
I’m hoping this gets to the right folks who can point me to an #AuDHD#neurodivergent and #actuallyautistic friendly #instance on #mastodon ? One that is welcoming and focused if possible on the adult experience as opposed to a parenting group focused on kids.🙏
The fact that there's no plans for moderation expansion is quite depressing.
I feel terrible for the Mastodon admins that feel they are stuck with this project and have to do "manual" moderation for thousands of users across 23,000 instances and hundreds of thousands of posts a day....🤦♂️
Can I have my "replies to other users" get shown to my followers please? That's how this platform is supposed to work considering there's literally a "show replies" option on the home timeline, so let's have it do that. Thanks!😳😬
What the heck is up with Mastodon? I follow myself on a couple of alts but don't really login to those alts until yesterday.
It has come to my attention that even though most of my posts and replies are set to "public" and my alt accounts' timelines have "replies on", NONE of my replies to other people are on the home timelines of my followers that use mastodon.
What the absolute fuck.
That's nuts!! Why is that happening and why doesn't anyone talk about it? I found out by logging into an alt account and that's concerning....
Shouldn't my followers, who have "replies on" on their timelines, SEE my replies on their timelines?!?!??! I'm SO dumbfounded that this has been happening and I'm just becoming Aware of it!!!
60-70% of Fedi is using Mastodon and nobody sees this but me?!?😳
