Biden: what would Trump have done if the Capitol riots had been led by Black Americans? ( www.theguardian.com )

Joe Biden has launched one of his most scathing attacks yet on Donald Trump’s record of racism, suggesting that the former US president would have acted differently to the January 6 2021 insurrection if was led by Black people....

lennybird ,
@lennybird@lemmy.world avatar

There would be non-stop coverage of Jan 6 on Fox News 24/7 since the day it happened, guaranteed.

lennybird ,
@lennybird@lemmy.world avatar

Did you guys see Chris Sununu fully bend over backwards, collapsing his face fully into Trump's ass cheeks to defend his endorsement despite going full 180 from his words not 2 years ago? That man should join the circus with flexibility like that.

  • Putin.
  • Saudi Arabia.
  • Global shitty response to covid pandemic, especially by Trump and dimwitted conservative followers.

No Surprise CPI and inflation spiked post-pandemic. Came down massively since its peak in 2022, though.

lennybird ,
@lennybird@lemmy.world avatar

You guys are missing an essential point — conservatives control the narrative.

  • From Fox News blowing MSNBC and CNN out of the water in ratings
  • Right-wing talk radio pioneered by Rush Limbaugh
  • Indoctrination Centers (churches) across America...

Conservatives LONG won the information war.

What does this mean? Republicans can do no wrong while Democrats are held to an infinitely higher standard and anything they do is hammered home to the ignorant, uneducated average American FAR greater than what Democrats can do to the right.

Things have marginally improved in the last 10 years as the recognition of Botherism has expanded, but let's not forget: (1) Republicans still have the majority of the money, (2) Republicans won huge with Citizens United and SpeechNow decisions, and (3) they're assholes and assholes will beat you with experience.

Catering to a broader coalition on the left that is also far less confrontational by the nature of being more empathetic is also something that we as a group must come to terms with. Our rallying points have never been blind loyalty and fear-mongering like the Right uses with the literally biochemically-altered conservative brain (studies on MRI testing prove this). We gather strength through vision, hope, solidarity, love — hence why Obama's Hope & Change message in 2008 was pure genius.

Though I will say I do agree there is a certain type of character we can seek to promote on the left, like AOC, like Bernie, like Warren, and like even Swalwell. Someone not afraid to push the bully back. Hopefully we learned a big lesson from Obama's era of capitulation and seeing his hand get smacked down over and over as he tried to reach across the aisle.

Man... You could just fucking own it and be far better off in every way. Just speaks to the crazy ego these people have.

This should be plastered every single day from now through election day. Texas has enough people to vote out these scumbags; it's just motivating them to go out and vote.

Empowering voters counters defeatism and apathy.

Implemented by folks who surely call themselves good Christians. Boy, Jesus sure would be proud.

If only they cracked down on real estate / investment industry the same way. What a fucked up world.

"Just to simply announce today that we will change our approach on arms exports, it would make Hamas stronger and it would make a hostage deal less likely," he adds.

... But it would SAVE civilians and force Israel to reevaluate their blatantly low standard for collateral damage.

That Cameron simply thinks "hammering more aid" into Gaza can offset the destruction of 500-2000lb bombs in densely-populated civilian centers needs to be called out head-on by reporters and activists.

At the end of the day, Israel has committed the equivalent of well over 20 if not 30 October 7ths in terms of the death and destruction to innocent civilian lives. REGARDLESS of Hamas' actions, it speaks more on Israel that they don't value the alleged human shields Hamas supposedly uses at every strike Israel makes.

@lennybird@lemmy.world avatar

Sucks because I've appreciated his support for Ukraine as of late.

He's simply wrong on this, however.

Edit: wtf? Are there really supporters of fascist Putin in here?

How Zionism became a synonym for violence and oppression ( www.theguardian.com )

For decades, Joe Biden has proudly declared that he is a Zionist, and he has repeated that claim since Hamas’s 7 October attacks on Israel. But for the student anti-war protests gripping the US, the words “Zionist” and “Zionism” have become a watchword – pejorative and emblematic of the violent state policies driving...

lennybird ,
@lennybird@lemmy.world avatar

The best thing to come out of all this is the veil finally being removed and a global conversation of separating antisemitism from anti-Israeli nationalism. It's been so tiring seeing Israel conflate the two for decades.

Having a wanton disregard for civilian life, shutting down news agencies... They've become the very thing they fought against nearly a century ago.

Last I checked, physicians must treat both symptoms and diseases simultaneously. E.g., the Shock. The bleeding. The excess fever.

Similarly there's no reason both cannot be tackled simultaneously here as well; for the root cause is often far more difficult to address than treating symptoms.

So yes, address the root causes such as:

  • Reducing societal stress (reduce work weak, lower socioeconomic inequality)
  • Expand and improve baseline education levels
  • Provide Universal healthcare with free access to mental health including therapy.

... But also address the symptoms, which means that when someone does inevitably fall through the cracks, they're not given free and easy access to gun that is lethally more effective than a knife.

lennybird ,
@lennybird@lemmy.world avatar

Right? I've long said that Democrats should just pivot and say, "Okay you don't want to work on getting guns out of the hands of criminals? Okay whatever. You agree part of this is a result of mental health? Okay, then let's pass Universal healthcare with guaranteed access to therapy and more."

lennybird ,
@lennybird@lemmy.world avatar

I'm fully on-board with a national gun ban and a complete change of the 2nd amendment, but I know we are also decades away from that realistically. Boomers and GenX will have to die off first. Can't teach old dogs new tricks.

lennybird ,
@lennybird@lemmy.world avatar

Like I said I'm good with either direction. Pragmatic pivoting to root causes, addressing the hemorrhagic symptoms, or both.

Not all the Russian honeypot and money in the world could convince me to step foot in that shithole of a nation.

r/The_Donald helped radicalize users into far-right identities and discourse – Active users on r/The_Donald increasingly used white nationalist vocabularies in their comments within three months. ( journals.sagepub.com )

I know most people that were on reddit at the time are fully aware of this and won't be surprised but don't dismiss the findings out of hand. It's important that studies are being conducted and the fact that the finding match our lived experience is still noteworthy.

@lennybird@lemmy.world avatar

If you ever want to observe or engage (be ready for the pile-up) with these same folks, r/ShitPoliticsSays contains the exact same user-base of extremists. These are dyed-in-the-wool folks because they use this as a launching-point for brigading other subs comment threads. Lots of Canadian righties there, too. The only credit I'll give is unlike r/conservative that they never censored so you could pretty much discuss and test argumentative points to your heart's content.

Just read the thread covering this very article about T_D lol

Of course I still think a sizable chunk of these folks operate in discord channels and astroturfed Sanders subs (especially the 2020 election), ChapoTrapHouse, etc.

My wife's father is still peddling that toxic masculinity bullshit on his grandson, saying...to our 1-year-old... To toughen it up.

My wife about lost it on him. Now that was to our son but for our daughter it would be no different and it's a reflection of her childhood.

Being emotionally unattached, uncomfortable with crying, and being incapable saying sorry and admitting you're wrong are simply massive. Kids are kids but they have a keen sense of justice and parents should empower them to stand up for themselves and be proud of them for exposing you as a hypocrite... Not beat them with a belt...

And for goodness sake, play with your kid. She wants to play dolls? Dress you up? Paint your nails? Tea time? By god you do it! If she wants to play with army men (they make army gals, too), go for it!

Being a parent is like one part being a therapist, one part being the fence to the boundaries of exploration, and one part being The Doctor or some superhero in your child's eyes capable of making magic and excitement happen. Fucking incredible, honestly.

Trump's speech level has proven to be at the 4th grade so this tracks.

Unfortunately in our current system, that is a good deal and platinum level insurance. Even working for a hospital that's the best you tend to get.

Yes, we need single payer, though.

lennybird ,
@lennybird@lemmy.world avatar

It was so outlandish that many of these folks opted to believe the media was slandering him over him just being that scummy of a person.

The character-assassination on "The Media" (granted some of that was self-inflicted) was really successful, allowing anyone to follow whatever narrative they desired without shame.

Or a good teacher who knows they're neither trained nor paid enough to warrant the responsibility will keep it locked up very tightly and in the panic forget the code / lose the key, and then they'll be the scapegoat after everything ends.

They're trying to conflate a right-wing judge's bias with those biG bAd LibErAlS who defend Garland's meticulous albeit slow investigation and hand-off to Jack Smith I guess.

Donnie was only a "staunch" Democrat because he was playing to the local crowd. Was he ever a true Democrat? Did he ever care about any of the traditional issues? No chance.

Like Bloomberg they're just Dem to fit in and not be ostracized. All those fucks are conservative Republicans in reality.

Macklemore Attacks Joe Biden On Pro-Palestine Song "Hind's Hall" ( www.hotnewhiphop.com )

Someone recently memed a twitter post that said, "The Have-Nots and the Have-Yachts."

These right-wing assholes bitch and bemoan injustice and the working man and elite, but ignore how fucked it is we have rising childhood homelessness let alone poverty... But hey at least wealthy shitheads own multiple mansions, yachts, and private planes amirite. The King of Jordan owns at least 2 beach front Malibu mansions; Saudi Arabia, Russia, Japan, China own vast swaths of American land... And there's not a peep over that; just blame the poor mother and child fleeing crime and poverty in South/Central America for geopolitical disasters WE largely caused or ignored in the first place.

lennybird ,
@lennybird@lemmy.world avatar

Be cool if most of the enrolled protested and transferred elsewhere. After all, they only care about money.

It's like these dipshits forgot the Civil Rights and Vietnam protests. Very rarely do college students up on the wrong side of history.

Crazy that the Kent State protests shooting anniversary just occurred.

lennybird ,
@lennybird@lemmy.world avatar

Exactly. Imagine if it wasn't just Trump but Mike Pompeo that piece of utter dog shit instead of Blinken. They'd be cheering on the bombings faster than Dick Cheney could say WMD while they just laughed at the protesters.

lennybird ,

What astounds me is it's clearly a losing battle. Our statistics are terrible. The proliferation of firearms makes us no safer and in fact leads to a plethora of terrible side-effects that yield a net-negative upon society. Even the Wild West was no safer, hence why both Dodge City and Tombstone both implemented gun control laws.

It only makes sense. Easy access to firearms benefits the deranged and criminal since they're the ones with the willingness to abuse them and we don't live in Minority Report where the defender can easily shoot first.

Fair points.

Side note just in case it saves you from a gotcha in arguing with a Maga nutjob, but Trump didn't hold the Bible upside down that day, per NYT, Politifact, and other fact checkers. He's still a useless piece of shit.

lennybird ,
@lennybird@lemmy.world avatar

I'd venture a guess the majority of users here are American and just trying to solve our stupid American shit.

If you don't care, then just ignore. If you do care about reducing deaths in America, then let these conversations play out.

lennybird ,
@lennybird@lemmy.world avatar

What was wrong with how they said it?

lennybird ,
@lennybird@lemmy.world avatar

My guy, how do you think peoples' opinions on national issues shift over the years...?

... The answer: By the aggregation of conversations like this. Connecting dots to parallel events to exemplify what could've been — what other time is a viable time to have that conversation, at the dinner table...?

There really is nothing wrong here; there really is nothing rude here. The user is using satire and sarcasm to indicate that UK has more fruitful laws than America. if anything, it's raising UK up and pointing out our stupid American shit. This is a public forum well within the rules — again, what is wrong with that?

The only thing I can conceive is that there are pro-gun folks on here who'd rather suppress this dialogue. They are quite literally the only ones who would object to not having the uncomfortable conversation about firearms in America and saving lives.

lennybird ,
@lennybird@lemmy.world avatar

This has nothing to do with parallel events since the UK and the US have vastly different laws & regulations (or lack thereof).

Yes, that is precisely my point — can't you see? Let me attempt to spell it out:

    • A parallel event occurs in the UK that is common in the US: a mass casualty homicidal rampage.
    • We (what we learn in English composition) Compare-and-Contrast in order to learn
    • We take what we've compared-and-contrasted, and we improve.

What you seem to suggest is that comparing and contrasting is off-limits on public forums for some inane reason.

And Americans constantly - and I really mean constantly - trying to interject their own politics into foreign topics that has nothing to do with them, trying to make the topic about them, is nothing but annoying at this point.

For better or worse, Americans have a massive influence on the world stage. We are the Rome of this era. What happens in America often impacts the globe, again for better or worse. Considering this is an open community that has many Americans on here, I fail to see the issue. Like, why are you so hellbent on suppressing a conversation about improving something for Americans? This has zero impact on what happens in the UK; we're simply contrasting experiments in other countries to see what works, and what doesn't.

This is all in the name of improvement, and I'll be damned if anyone tries to suggest there's something taboo about that.

This is, unfortunately, just proving my point though, since you completely ignore what I’m saying and continue to try to make this about you.

Again, your opening sentence outright proves you are completely ignoring my point.

lennybird ,
@lennybird@lemmy.world avatar

Fair enough, you as well.

lennybird ,
@lennybird@lemmy.world avatar

What the actual fuck hahaha.

So what you're saying is make it a wrist slap and nobody will get upset? lol. Forget the fact you're moving the goalpost from, "they retaliated because of prison conditions" to, "it's because the police were armed!"

The real reason is these were bad dudes in a terrible state of mind and society failed them long before this point. More criminals voluntarily do a crime just to get 3 meals a day and shelter. Can't be that terrible if many are doing that, can it? It's also not like people don't resist arrest in countries where police are unarmed.l

lennybird ,
@lennybird@lemmy.world avatar

I'm not going to discount America's plethora of issues from 1) terrible education, 2) terrible health care systems, and 3) Below-average prison conditions just to name the big 3.

But, this guy had a massive criminal record going back over a decade. He was a massive piece of shit, and the vast majority of people served warrants simply do not engage in a shoot-out, putting a child and mother at risk. For as much shit as I give police officers, this is a reflection of the criminal's state of mind and not anything the police did. I seriously doubt this dude had the foresight to consider prison conditions.

lennybird ,
@lennybird@lemmy.world avatar

He's been well beyond the 3rd strike for quite some time as I gleaned from reading.

There's really no good alternative about it. The police did what they should've done. They got a warrant and pursued a bad guy. There really is no justification for what he did. If anything, it justifies arming the police more in order to enforce the law; for there is no substantive evidence to the contrary to suggest that if they came bearing balloons and flowers he wouldn't gun them down just the same. That's the thing about criminally insane people... They are not consistent.

What he did is ensure every cop is doubly-armed and on-edge in the future, for every cop has no alternative. After all, they don't control the prison system or the healthcare system or the education system.

@lennybird@lemmy.world avatar
