I’ve been known to deadname the one true church. Joseph Smith named it the Church of Christ, but the Mormon church is going through its little phase 💅 and insists on being called, and get this, no abbreviations allowed,

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Nifty Unicode support is the only thing we like about the future

How old is the oldest building in the town you live in?

To those from the Western hemisphere, it's always fascinating to hear that some homes and businesses from the times of the Greek philosophers still have inhabitants, and then you remember that the Western hemisphere is itself not without its own examples, for example some Mexican villages still have temples from the times of the...

I grew up in the Western US, so I’m a big… fan of this underwhelming 1820s business.

My new go-to for “I haven’t arrived yet”

An important professor constantly and frustratingly said

we can call this variable whatever we want, so we’ll call it Fred

Made me panic and irate and focus on the wrong part of the problem. Every. Single. Time.

Yes. And mark my words: as bad as they may seem, these are the good old days.

They have been so done with me for aeons. God they’re awful people.

lars ,

Jesus Christ I guess I’m not misremembering.

Bing’s reverse image search is essentially dead in 2024 unless you’re uploading the Mona Lisa. It’s really, really terrible and even worse than Google.

My favorites right now are Tineye, Yandex, and Google, in that order.

They’re always the happiest people, too, am I right?

All op needs to do is hide who they are and what they do, and then they, too, can partake.

Tangent, but most of our primates enjoy non-sexual touch and the rise in homophobia—or something idk—has left a lot of men afraid of even a hug. Check out old pics of guys with their buddies. What have we done to ourselves?

lars ,

I’ve been expecting them to Lemmy have it back through Settings on macOS or iOS since like the 00s. I guess it’s not gonna happen. 😓

They’re called Bott’s dots! Most places where it snows don’t have them because they don’t survive ploughing.

Millennial here and I haven’t yet seen a non-cursive self-identifying signature. Are they just like bubbly high-school antics and hearts dotting the letter i?

I have amblyopia. Is this accurate? ( lemmy.sdf.org )

I have amblyopia—also known as lazy eye—which means I often see a bit of double vision—usually a sliver duplicated on the outside side of one of my eyes, even when I’m wearing contacts, and even though I don’t look like I have a lazy eye. My eyes definitely don’t work in concert and I’m told my 3D vision resembles...

lars OP ,

My “lazy” eye now actually has better vision than the eye I actually use. The lazy eye is just for show.

I had surgery at like 5 years old and I’m told it helped at least as much as the eyepatches.

Didn’t they own people and commit treason??

Dylan is a genius of the profound variety. I was concerned when he seemed to disappear; I’m delighted it looks like a happier ending.

Thank you for making the world make better sense, Dylan!

I love Texans but when I worked telephones when I was younger, only the most awful people were exactly the kinds of Texans you’re describing. Maybe it was because we were strangers but there is a part of me that’s still terrified, especially of Dallas people, because of it.

Do I really have to escape my dots in a .gitignore?

Am I really bathing if I’m using water I cannot drink?

Am I really bathing if I’m using still-undrinkable—but chlorinated—water?

Europeans care more about elephants than people, says Botswana president

is a rare English ambiguity construction that means either:

Europeans care more about elephants than Europeans care about people

or

Europeans care more about elephants than people care about elephants

we’ll never know

lars OP ,

Well your dad made me this sign.

But alas he’s also not crazy about the font or layout.

Nobody loves pedantic escaped single quoting more than I.

Except for you wow.

Show us the rc.

More like “don’t fuck around (but of course the answer is some subset of git checkout (which is probably Turing-fucking-complete)), and find out anyway”.

but what is this literal garbage that merits its own shitpost: “hepatitis yellow and whytepeeple-flesh pink”?

I never realized it’s a gopher. That’s cute and clever for such an awful mascot.
