I don’t live in California, but this hit close to home for me. I just bought a house in March, and at the time I didn’t have a dog. My insurance agency, out of nowhere, dropped my insurance (no questions asked) because they saw a pit bull in my yard. Turns out my neighbor has a pit bull, and it came into my yard. I was able to get the decision appealed, but I was blown away that they’d actually sent someone to spy on me. Be careful out there!

Also, obligatory and sarcastic: Land of the Free!

This is awesome! I can only imagine how exciting that must’ve been for Cpt. Dwight. Well deserved.

For those like me who like to have more context and enjoy learning about things, there is a Snopes article describing this cartoon (and many others) from the 1969 issue of Mad Magazine. I found it an interesting read.

By your logic, human existence is the point in which things exist. And by that logic, fossils wouldn’t exist. Nor dinosaurs, the earth, or even the beginning of the universe (however you believe it came to be).

I would argue that poetry is more than the mere written word arranged in a rhyming schema. It extends to being anything that sparks creativity of the mind. e.g., The colors of the sunset reflecting off the surface of a pond that ripples from an animal jumping on the water. Surely that existed before humans?

Now I would certainly agree that it took humans to best articulate it by being able to write (or otherwise convey) these moments into more than a fleeting moment in their memory.

I think the bigger takeaway from this is not that it was his wife who did it (regardless of whether that’s true), it’s that he readily threw his wife under the bus in an attempt to save face for himself. That, by itself, speaks volumes to the type of guy he is at his very core. Or even his supposed loved ones are safe if he feels threatened. Now that’s the sad part.

dohpaz42 ,
@dohpaz42@lemmy.world avatar

You just described what it is to throw someone under the bus. 😊

To "throw under the bus" is a figurative phrase in English meaning to blame or abandon a person for selfish reasons. It is typically used to describe a disavowal of a previously amicable relationship to avoid being associated with something controversial or embarrassing.

Do you ever go back and reread your own posts and find yourself wondering how the hell you managed to say the words that you said? ( kbin.social )

Like sometimes I'll make a post and I go back and I reread it and I'm like somebody way smarter than me wrote this, and sometimes I'll go back and reread it and wonder how the fuck was I so stupid as to write this?...

dohpaz42 ,
@dohpaz42@lemmy.world avatar

Yes. Mostly about the “I can’t believe I wrote that”. What you’re doing is self-reflection, and that’s a good thing. It’s good that you can recognize things you’ve said before that you’ve learned from. I don’t feel like enough people do this.

When using both {} and ;, it’s safer to use single quotes to escape the current argument and ending delimiter; eg ’{}’ and ’;’, respectively.

As pointed out to me yesterday in a similar thread, all this person wants to do is create a website with resources trying to steer women away from abortion. Not track them.

Those ears look like German Shepard. The rest of him hints at Pit Bull.

If that’s even remotely close to accurate, you’ve got a super intelligent good boy on your hands. And while intelligence can be good, it can also lead to a lot of trouble. 😅 make sure to keep him stimulated and tired. 🤣

My best guess is that they are asking that out of all of the zombie lore that’s out there – live action tv, cartoons, movies, comic books, etc – which does the community think is the best of the best.

Why do they even need a database of pregnant women? I get that GOP is trying to take away a woman’s autonomy and all that, but what’s the official public reason they’re giving?

If you take into account past republican behavior, it’s quite probable that she’s either bi or a closeted homosexual, and is simply projecting her shame onto other people so she doesn’t have to acknowledge her tingly bits every time she sees another woman.

93% human, 2% mixed, and 5%.

Seems legit. 👍

A GOP Texas school board member campaigned against schools indoctrinating kids. Then she read the curriculum. ( www.texastribune.org )

Weeks after winning a school board seat in her deeply red Texas county, Courtney Gore immersed herself in the district’s curriculum, spending her nights and weekends poring over hundreds of pages of lesson plans that she had fanned out on the coffee table in her living room and even across her bed. She was searching for...

I’m cynical, so when I say I’m impressed by her ability to both do the hard work of pouring over that much data, and admitting that there was no evidence supporting g her claims, I mean it. I’m thoroughly impressed. I hope she serves as an example to others on how to do the right thing.

And what this post doesn’t highlight from the article, is that she went against her party’s narrative and spoke out about the truth.

Gore rushed to share the news with the hard-liners who had encouraged her to run for the seat. She expected them to be as relieved and excited as she had been. But she said they were indifferent, even dismissive, because “it didn’t fit the narrative that they were trying to push.”

So, in the spring of 2022, Gore went public with a series of Facebook posts. She told residents that her backers were using divisive rhetoric to manipulate the community’s emotions. They were interested not in improving public education but rather in sowing distrust, Gore said.

“I’m over the political agenda, hypocrisy bs,” Gore wrote. “I took part in it myself. I refuse to participate in it any longer. It’s not serving our party. We have to do better.”

There is more, of course, so if you have t read the full article, go read it.

Sadly, you’re absolutely right: there will always be some excuse as to why she’s (and the “libs” are) wrong and they’re right. We are an unapologetic society hellbent on blaming the other guy for the problems we caused ourselves.

You’re not at fault in your assumption. They were talking about the barge in one sentence, and then electricity being restored in the following sentence. They should have clarified in the latter sentence the subject to which the electricity was restored; eg “electricity was restored to the University….” It’s ironic that an institute of higher learning used such bad grammar.

It would be funny, if it weren’t painfully true. DuckDuckGo sucks just as bad as Google. I hear there is a good search engine, but it costs money to use. Shocking. Maybe they are all the same company, making shitty free services to try to steer you to paying for better services.

I just got through grad school and had a similar experience with my capstone project. I had all semester to work on it, but didn’t get started until a week before it was due. I had to take the last day off of work just to binge write my paper.

So glad that’s over with … 😅

If you live in the US, and have medically-diagnosed ADHD, you can write your HR to let them know you have a disability under the ADA and that you would like accommodations. You must have it in writing (ie email), otherwise there’s no proof. Once you do this, you become protected in the vent your ADHD is negatively affecting your work.

Of course YMMV, and employers might still try to oust you if they think you’re not capable. But having a paper trail will certainly help.

At this point I’m starting to think we should just skip elections, skip the civil war, and go straight to splitting the country into two parts. The libs can have the left side and these fools can have the right side.

Why left and right? It should be obvious. To reflect our so-called political leanings.

It’s either that, or let these fuckers takes us down with them.

“Questioning Mr. Kennedy’s health is a hilarious suggestion, given his competition.”

Pretty sure questioning his health is vitally important, especially given his competition:

  • Hole in brain from either a tumor a parasite (sounds like they’re not sure)
  • history of long- and short-term memory problems
  • neurological disorder affecting his speech
  • unwillingness to disclose medical records
  • an “irregular heartbeat caused by a common heart abnormality that can cause strokes”…

How is he any better than the other two?

Imagine that…

Most patients predicted that their worst symptoms when exposed to gluten would be classic lower digestive problems like diarrhea, bloating and cramps. However, none of these occurred during the acute immune responses observed by Anderson’s team. Instead, patients experienced nausea and vomiting. Anderson describes them as,...

I, for one, was diagnosed several years ago with Celiac’s. I had the upper endoscopy and everything to prove it. It wasn’t until about a month ago that I started getting the food poisoning-like vomiting and excruciating abdominal pain when accidentally having gluten. Before then, it was only ever diarrhea as the worst outcome.

Nobody warned me it could get this bad. So I was careless with my approach to being gluten free. But now that I know how severe it really is, I will definitely be more attentive going forward.

dohpaz42 OP ,

I imagine the vomiting is the body’s way to purge the “poison” in my stomach, and prevents it from getting into my digestive system.
