Then Bing it is. I switched on my daily machine and DDG has been ok. Still a lot of sponsored shit I don't need, but better than getting a solid lie from Google

Is roller derby a real sport?

It's the NASCAR of women's sport.

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

Britney Griner is definitely worse than all of those 550 men.

You understand the WNBA all stars would be beat handily by an 8th grade all star team right? It wouldn't be close.

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

Now, what did we see in reality?

We saw a middling to low level male power lifter make the Olympics at 43. That's insane.

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

This is why this debate is stupid. The people having it are arguing against people who have actually played sport their whole lives. I watched an 8th grade travel team decimate what I thought was our very good team. They had a kid show up that was over 6 (in 8th fucking grade) that could play above the rim. He was unstoppable. That kid would easily be a starter in the WNBA and would smash Griner back to Russia. Get 15 or so of those kids and put them up against any WNBA team you want to put together and they'd win handily.

That's the point. Trans-women athletes are essentially testosterone doping. They've got more muscle mass, and a heavier bone structure. That doesn't go away after the transition. The British Journal of Sports Medicine confirmed that.

In non-competitive leagues, I could care less...everyone can play with everyone...it's fine. When you're talking about the Olympics and college sports where the girls have trained their whole lives for a given event only to be beat out by someone who got to take the equivalent of human growth hormones and testosterone is unfair.

Eh...I'm all the words according to Lemmy. The crowd here seems to all be 13-22 year old ultra liberals. I'm liberal, just not hardcore bleeding edge jump of the left cliff liberal.

The global shock from a Chinese war on Taiwan

Depends on if Trump wins. If he does, the US will let it happen. If Biden is in office, we will at least send strongly worded letters of disapproval to China.

@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

It does when we are supplying all the party favors.

I wouldn't say terrified. There's these things called dignity and respect. NYC gave up on those a long time ago.

Americans are choking on surging fast-food prices. "I can't justify the expense," one customer says ( www.cbsnews.com )

Kevin Roberts remembers when he could get a bacon cheeseburger, fries and a drink from Five Guys for $10. But that was years ago. When the Virginia high school teacher recently visited the fast-food chain, the food alone without a beverage cost double that amount....

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

I can't fathom what I have at home that's worse for me than a 1200 calorie value meal.

I'd really have to go out of my way to make something that calorie dense and still edible.

chakan2 , (edited )
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

That’s about the same as half a fairly modest frozen pizza and a soda.

Had to look that up. So...Totino's party pizza (which I eat every once in a while if I'm being a total slob)...It's 700 calories for the whole thing, plus throw in a 16oz pepsi and you're still at only 900 calories. (Which I only drink diet these days)

It doesn't sound like a big difference, but that's still usually 100-300 calories less than fast food. They're both shit for you, but if you get to the brass tacks, those 100-200 calories per meal add up quickly.

That's 20 extra minutes of light exercise per meal.

(The other thing...I looked up the cheap frozen dinners...they're surprisingly not bad. Banquet, which you can get for 1-2$ usually, is only 400 calories. The higher priced ones ("Big Man") things are only 600-700. Again, terrible food, but still healthier and cheaper than McDonald's)

Anyway...the point...It'd be hard for me to make something as unhealthy as McDonald's at home. I've done it (Eggs Benedict for example), but it took a lot of work.

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

It's a reasonable assumption. But hell...I think even a bucket of pizza rolls is still slightly healthier for you than a super sized value meal.

I don't disagree with you. But I think even the the most unholy compulsive eater will do a little better if they can get away from fast foods.

It doesn't matter how this trial turns out... he'll appeal the fuck out of it until January then make up some bullshit about being able to parson himself from state crimes...

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

Again, I don’t know if that’s true or not.

That's the game...it doesn't matter if it's true or not. He'll claim it is, and by the time (or if even) the courts figure it out, the media will have forgot all about it and he'll get away with it. It's been a systemic dismantling of democracy that Biden didn't do anything to fix. We're fucked...royally fucked.

Just imagine a word where all the people talk like LLMs

Have you talked to real people lately? I thinking I'm leaning towards the dystopian version of humanity.

TIL - asking someone on a date is the equivalent of prison rape.

Clearly we do. But the children here will never understand that.

Last I checked, one of their core functions is to prevent trespassing and vandalism.

To me the key point was did the kid open the door? I've seen conflicting reports about it.

Also, I hate HOAs as much as anyone, but I have no idea how they are involved in this one.

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

According to the law, it is. (Even without castle doctrine a random stranger trying to gain entry into your house is usually grounds for self defense).

If the kid didn't open the door, then I agree with you. But even the kid admitted to at least grabbing the handle of the door. I'd personally never do that at stranger's or even an acquaintance's house.

From a moral standpoint, please don't try to walk into stranger's houses uninvited.

Palestinian released from Israeli prison describes beatings, sexual abuse and torture ( www.haaretz.com )

Among candidates for U.S. sanctions, Israel's Prison Service should be next on the list. This is apparently the realm where all the sadistic instincts of the minister of national security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, find their outlet....

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

Well... the Israeli prisoners didn't get to say much, because they're dead.

I'm so tired of the which side is worse propaganda. Both sides are fucking awful.

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

Lol...omg...lol...sure it is. Do you like women's rights? Do you like LGBQ peeps? Do you like freedom of speech?

If so, you're picking the wrong horse in this one.

I hope they wipe each other out at this point before the rest of the world gets in to the battle over who's all powerful sky wizard is more cool.

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

Well...Trump will indeed end the war quickly. Likely by turning Gaza into scorched earth.

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

The gates of hell are calling him home and he's trying to make amends before that happens.

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

I would too, but it really depends on the company. If I can do it, I'm WFH for the rest of my career for companies < 1000 people.

FAANG (or whatever it is these days) are awful fucking people to work for. One of the developers I respect most in my career walked out on .5M in bonuses on Amazon because of their ranking system for his employees. I was shocked.

But depending on the employer it's still a very good gig. But if you're at the wrong place, it's like the upper circles of hell.

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

I don't know why anyone is surprised by this. It's been the plan since the insurrection failed. They need to nail down R support with an iron fist single they'll never get the popular vote again.

@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

Isn't that felony animal abuse?

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

TIL. Thanks....terrible to know, but thanks for clarifying.

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

That lack of anything Isreal related is fucking frustrating.

Not really...the average person doesn't care. It's two bullies throwing rocks at each other in a sandbox halfway around the world. If anything, the Palestinian protests of late made the US care even less about it. IMO, just pull out of that whole shit show and let them sort it out on their own.

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

Biden doesn't have the balls for that...Trump, unfortunetely does (or he's just too fucking stupid to realize the ramifications of it).

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

I started switching everything to duckduckgo. So far it's been a much better experience.

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

No...and it's like Trump already won the court of opinion due to it. It's terrible messaging.

No one really cares that he banged a prostitute. Clinton was all over that too...We DO care that he committed fraud.

But reading through this...well...who cares really:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/04/22/trump-hush-money-trial-charges/

Instead of framing this as Trump is a terrible person who did terrible things, it's worded like he tripped on a very complex piece of legislature.

TL;DR: You made an important point.

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

Well…Trump didn’t sign it…It must be good right?

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

That’s actually too bad. The electronic voting machine are laughably easy to hack.

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

I’d point you to the space episode of Black Mirror.

Personally, don’t know. I’m pretty liberal and I’d be flattered if someone had deep fake nudes of me.

But I understand the counter argument.

It’s a weird moral conundrum.

@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

Which scans. How many people watch normal.porn and think: “well, that’s good enough” and just stop pursuing a real partner

Enough that our birth rates are dropping and less people are getting married.

You’re going to have to source your claim there.

@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

It does nudge you…but it’s not full screen ads that take multiple clicks to get through every week. I was a Windows zealot through W7…W10 got bad…W11 got me to start using Apple and Linux.

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

“When it’s a software problem…”

Correct…now we are back to talking about vendor lock in and very specialized techs to install the updates.

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

I guess my position is if a car needs an OTA update, it’s a critical failure by the manufacturer. They should be 99.999%.

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

They are dirt cheap around me, which is why I see so many of them. I saw a 2016 Model S with the Ludacris update go for 13k. I kind of wanted it just to drive one, then I looked up the repair prices.

Sure… I’d get a maybe 200 mile range out of it in the summer…but once winter hit I was looking at like 25k-50k to replace the battery and the motors.

I can swap the motor and transmission in my car for less than 10k and have a mostly new car.

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

How do you deploy manned fighters against an aircraft you can’t detect?

Edit: As to not downing the aircraft. That’s irrelevant. It wouldn’t matter if it’s an air to air missile or ground to air…you just fire more.

I can buy thousands of rockets for the cost of a single F22 or F16.

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

You understand you need all that equipment to get a manned fighter close enough to engage. At that point firing a barrage of smart missiles is still cheaper.

chakan2 ,
@chakan2@lemmy.world avatar

The big cost would be satellite and radar coverage. We have that already.
