It's only a matter of time before this leaks into all AAA games, I hate capitalism.

candyman337 ,
@candyman337@sh.itjust.works avatar

You're not understanding what I'm saying. This is them testing the waters. All companies that are publicly traded will continue to do whatever they can to make a profit. Consumer be damned. I don't buy AAA games, but it doesn't change the fact that changes like this will propagate across the gaming industry and make it worse as a whole. The issue here is them trying to turn a profit for shareholders no matter what. So many of these companies are prioritizing making a profit why they happen to release games and not vice versa. That is a result of the last stage unregulated capitalism we have in America and those same tendencies that they've propagated to the global economy.

Don't be so naive to say "just don't buy it bro." I won't. It doesn't really affect me that much RIGHT NOW. But it might, the more they're legally allowed to and the more they get away with the more everyone will do it. It happened with DLC's, then releasing unfinished games, in game purchase in games you have to buy, etc. God forbid I don't want the entirety of AAA gaming to be a pile of shit. It's time for lawmakers to step in in this industry and most others and put limits on what type of things companies can do to make a profit. And this goddamn law that companies must do everything they can to turn a profit for their shareholders must be done away with.

candyman337 ,
@candyman337@sh.itjust.works avatar

My point is this is a larger problem of capitalism and just supporting companies that don't do this doesn't always work. The gaming industry is getting worse, and there will be less and less devs that actually don't do this. And there will be less and less devs that are fiscally able to not do this. I have seen it happen time and time again.

    candyman337 , (edited )
    @candyman337@sh.itjust.works avatar

    Welp, don't like that. US nonprofit is a huge misnomer. For the most part they're used by the wealthy to create businesses that don't need to pay taxes.

    Edit: Not sure why I'm getting mass downvotes. The non profit system in America is where the wealthy go to create tax free income. The CEOs of non profits still get huge salaries. Just seems out of line with the vision of a true non profit IMO. That's why I call it a misnomer. Non profits are almost never set up to do what they actually say they are trying to do. They're often just created to get public favor and money laundering.

    candyman337 ,
    @candyman337@sh.itjust.works avatar

    All I'm saying is generally when those in big tech establish a non profit, it's for the wrong reasons, or it eventually becomes the wrong reasons. Look at open AI. They had a non profit and and profit side. The non profit side essentially controlled with the for profit side did, then when they ousted the CEO for doing things that were clearly in the interest of profit over the betterment of society, the CEO had set it up so that without him the open AI ship began to sink. Then those on the board that were against him were ousted from the board. It was a hostile takeover.

    I'm not saying that's going to happen with mastadon, I'm just saying they have some key players that are investors and/or long time workers in big tech and it puts a bad taste in my mouth.

    Do I have Burnout?

    I really just need to talk about this to someone. I’m in college and I’ve always loved to learn, but now I don’t feel motivated do my school work or to study, but at the same time, when a test roles around and I don’t know how to answer the questions I get stressed and care about trying to do well. I’ve also always...

    candyman337 ,
    @candyman337@sh.itjust.works avatar

    I find in today’s society it’s easy to lose any reason for doing anything other than “I was told I have to” about halfway through college it really did feel like a scam, like I was getting screwed over and forced to do it anyway. I still believe it’s partially true, but I used the skills I learned in college to help push my personal life goals along.

    Ask yourself, will you be happy doing what you’re going to school for? Is the goal you’re going towards what you actually want to do? Will it help you do what you actually want to do? If you find good reasons for those, the next time you ask yourself “why am I doing any of this?” You’ll have an answer. If not, well, maybe it’s time to change your concentration, or seek out paths other than college.

    Just remember that you also do need to think about affording to live (unfortunately) in all of this.

    After putting my account into "hibernation" for the past few weeks, I finally closed it. But I'm still looking for work. Thankfully I can still find positions (SRE and software dev) by just going directly to the company's site and finding a Jobs page.

    Good luck to everyone else out there looking for work!

    I think we should stop pitting states against each other in a race to the bottom and see this for what it is: working class people having their rights taken away by the wealthy elite. The more we are divided the easier it is to do this type of thing. The politicians are doing this, not the people. And they have set up and continued to prop up a system that under educated voters, while also underpaying them and blaming it on anyone else they can do everyone is mad at everyone. We need to stop blaming each other and band together and force them to fix it.

    As someone who spends time programming, I of course find myself in conversations with people who aren’t as familiar with it. The speed at which it takes to make something. We had a vulnerability with a JavaScript library in an old app that I do minimal support on, I said that it only uses like 3 or 4 libraries, so depending on what it is the whole frontend may need to be re-written. IT: “Ok well we have to get that expensed.” Sure bro let me just bill the client that is paying for it and error support 20k for new dev time. Nah, the fix is gonna have to be a workaround on your end, we do not have the bandwidth and they don’t have the capital.

    candyman337 ,

    My parents live in a house built by my great grandmother, when I was a kid, about 7, just before I went to take a bath I saw the spirit of an old woman walk out of my parents room and into mine.

    She walked out, paused and looked at me, and then walked into my room. I. was. PETRIFIED. Although I knew if I told my dad something he wouldn’t believe me, so I put tried to not think about it as I had to walk towards the side of the house she had just walked from to take a bath lol. Nothing else happened that night. I didn’t recognize the woman but I remembered her face.

    A few weeks later I was going to sit down in our front room. On the table next to the chair I was going to sit in was one of my mom’s lamps, it was ornate and had a small glass pane slotted into a piece of wood. We always had an obituary card wedged in there so that it would show through the glass, but I never really read it or looked at it, it was one of those things that kind of just faded into the background for me. Especially since I’m ADHD, my brain kind of just filters out stuff sometimes. Even though I never really looked at it, my mom had told me it was my great grandmother’s obituary card. Well, as I was sitting down I happened to glance at it, and I had to do a double take, that was the woman I saw!

    I asked my dad when about my great grandmother lived here, where everyone’s bedroom’s were. He said “Well, Mimi had my bedroom, and yours was your grandmother’s and her sister’s.” That about confirmed it for me: I had seen the spirit of my great grandmother performing her nightly check up on her daughters. After that day sometimes if felt like she was watching over me in my room, although that could have just been in my head since I had seen her walk in.

    I used to have small moments like that just before waking up. I vividly remember seeing a vision of myself dropping and breaking one of my mom’s favorite mugs in a dream, and I woke up and I told myself never to touch that mug again.

    Well, come one day in winter my mom asks me to make her some hot chocolate while I’m making mine, sure enough, as I’m walking with her mug to the counter I drop it and it shatters exactly as I had seen in the dream.

    It’s so frustrating because it’s like, you’re not showing me to prevent it, WHY am I seeing it???

    I understand cheating is shitty but it would make a lot more sense for the teacher to make this a teachable moment about cheating, and to promote collaborative solutions, but also checking work you get from others.

    A huge part of development is copying code and reusing code from libraries. The important part is that you know how the code you copy works.

    [Discussion] What are you're thoughts on a Steamdeck with a PSP Go form factor?

    I just found out the PSP Go was a thing and I really like the idea of having the screen slide up to reveal the controls. I think this would be a great way to make a more compact version of the Steamdeck. I don’t know about the low profile joysticks though. This thing is larger in size but is a similar form factor. For PC gaming I don’t see anything getting much smaller than this for another few years at least. This thing is really cool though, this to me looks like the most viable handheld for on the go PC gaming I’ve seen. Really short battery life tho.

    I think once arm starts to become more common, and/or other RISC based platforms gain mainstream traction, more games will work on ARM based processors, and in turn we’ll start to see smaller and longer lasting PC gaming handhelds with arm based chips. Or at the least, handhelds with PC graphic quality.

    But it will happen eventually, you’d blow someone from the 90’s mind if you showed them a 3Ds, it all just takes time.
