Mozilla has updated Firefox to have some new data collection silliness. It seems OK, but if like me, you're skeptic, chose the hamburger menu, go to settings, type "firefox da" and the setting will pop up. Uncheck stuff and you're good to go.

Not my comfort zone to be the subject of a mini documentary like this, but here we are! Grateful to @mozilla for uplifting @horizontal's work and supporting our fight for a more open, safe, and private internet.

And always grateful to be building with a team of talented people who put care into both what we make and how we make it together 💙

It isolates people being held by the UK State and restricts their ability to exercise legal rights in the .

This follows a previous Home Office policy to seize mobile phones and extract data onto the Project Sunshine database.

Despite the practice being ruled illegal, the government is at it again.

This is partly the person's opsec failure however Proton's design is also a contributing factor here.

I have always wondered why Proton forces you to provide an email address if you want an account recovery option.

It would be better to give the option of using a recovery code or recovery file.

This option exists for data recovery but for some reason this option does not exist for account recovery. Is there a reason for this @protonprivacy? 🤔

It would be really nice to have both options! People shouldn't need to choose between opsec and having an option for account recovery!

Nearly all VPNs are reportedly affected by this 22+ year old vulnerability per researchers at Leviathan. https://arstechnica.com/security/2024/05/novel-attack-against-virtually-all-vpn-apps-neuters-their-entire-purpose/

I sent my preferred service in ProtonVPN (at @protonprivacy) an email about this and hope they respond to this serious claim. You should do the same for your preferred service (consumer, enterprise, self hosted too).

The dehumanising approach of the UK Home Office was stark in the decision to put GPS monitors on migrants.

This practice restricts the freedom to engage in everyday activities and can contribute to feelings of stress and anxiety.

GPS tracking devices allowed the Home Office to collect vast amounts of personal data to make decisions on asylum and immigration applications.

ICYMI: Proton @protonprivacy and Standard Notes @standardnotes are joining forces

I totally missed this, but looks like Proton acquired Standard Notes (end-to-end encrypted notes). Looks like nothing will change in the short term.

In 2022, they also acquired SimpleLogin, and have so far kept it more or less the same for users. You can just use your Proton account to sign up/in if wanted and there's some integration.
