    Season of KDE (SoK) participants have improved translations, Kdenlive, LabPlot and more.

    SoK is KDE's mentorship program that helps members of the public become active open source contributors.

    This year, participants have translated apps into more languages, implemented multi-format rendering and keyframe curve editing in @kdenlive , ported @be4foss testing tools to Windows, added options for importing and exporting data to @LabPlot and much, much more.

    One of my daily-driven laptops is getting a new system installed. I'm not sure whether I should stay in my familiar, cosy vanilla @gnome world – including my personal customisations, or whether I should finally seriously consider running the equally interesting for a longer term.

    These are not themes put out by the Plasma project as you are implying. They are not even created by Plasma developers, or even remotely recommended by KDE.

    These are themes developed by third parties and users install and run them at their own risk.

    WARNING: Global themes and widgets created by 3rd party developers for Plasma can and will run arbitrary code. You are encouraged to exercise extreme caution when using these products.

    A user has had a bad experience installing a global theme on Plasma and lost personal data.

    Global themes change the look of Plasma, but also the behavior. To do this they run code, and this code can be faulty, as in the case mentioned above. The same goes for widgets and plasmoids.

    Meanwhile, KDE is taking measures to properly warn users before each download and we are also putting in place ways of auditing and curating what is uploaded to the KDE store.

    There is a warning in the install dialog of every single installable 3rd party component.

    We are working on making the wording stronger, changing the color of the warning and make it more visible, but the warning has always been there.

    KDE provided the software that allowed to recover machines that had been obsoleted by the successive updates from Microsoft Windows, and this made possible for the CACD to carry out the program.

    We provided support and advice so that the teens could familiarise themselves with open source software, saving them from being trapped in the proprietary cycle of buy new hardware, update, be forced to buy new hardware, update, rinse and repeat.
