Keeping pet cats indoors would save millions of native animals and billions of dollars. So what's stopping us? ( www.abc.net.au )

Broader adoption of keeping cats safe at home would have large benefits for cat welfare, human health, local wildlife and even the economy. So, should cat owners be required to keep their pets contained to their property?...

YungOnions ,
@YungOnions@sh.itjust.works avatar

I've always assumed that a cat would go nuts stuck inside all the time. Maybe I'm wrong but I imagine that most people would view it as cruel.

Oh good. Another luxury SUV. Just what the EV market needs /s.

YungOnions ,
@YungOnions@sh.itjust.works avatar

I mean I wouldn't call £33,795+ for the EX30 'cheap' and it's still a SUV. We need more compact hatchback sized vehicles, imo.

Yeah, I thought that thing looked pretty cool to. A EV MX5 might be neat to.

So I went on Amazon and there it is, sitting at 186 5 star reviews. WTF. Genuine question: is there some way of reporting shit like this to Amazon? I can't see anything obvious.

Actually, not only are the vast majority of people aware of man made climate change, they also consider it personally important and a government priorty: https://climatecommunication.yale.edu/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/international-public-opinion-climate-change-2023-appendix.pdf

It's easy to lose track of the difference an individual can make to climate change, but you must view it from an appropriate perspective:

https://crowdsourcingsustainability.org/climate-change-can-one-person-really-make-a-difference/

https://theconversation.com/climate-change-yes-your-individual-action-does-make-a-difference-115169

It's hard to remain positive these days, so please take some time to remind yourself about all the things that are going well in the world:

It's important to take time to appreciate the things that are going well in the world.

As you correctly identified constantly doomscrolling is bad for your health.

That must be frustrating, but try not to let personal experience cloud the bigger picture. More people are willing to take action than you might think:

And people are taking action, here's some recent examples: https://curious.earth/blog/climate-success-stories/

Things look bleak, and it's hard to remain optimistic, so it's more important than ever to take the time to remind yourself of what is going right in the world:

YungOnions ,

That sounds frustrating but, with respect, evidence suggests otherwise: https://www.cleanenergywire.org/factsheets/global-surveys-show-peoples-growing-concern-about-climate-change#one

I absolutely agree that prioritising your own mental health is something everyone should do, but don't you think that governments and corporations are even less likely to do anything if people like yourself just throw up their hands in frustration and give up?

There are ways of maintaining good mental health, but I'm not sure doing a full 180 is one of them.

Address the issue at the source. Find out why these people are willing to risk their lives to leave and try and fix that. At the very least you could create a safe encampment in their home country where they can go to live, receive aid, food, housing etc. Get the UN involved to protect it or something.

This is kinda the same issue as with arresting homeless people for sleeping rough - it addresses (poorly) the symptom, not the cause.

YungOnions ,
@YungOnions@sh.itjust.works avatar

people migrate illegally from everywhere. you're suggesting the UK should fix what exactly? every undeveloped nation everywhere?

I mean, not on its own, no, and only those nations from which it's reciving the bulk of the immigrants. But long term that is the only viable option. As I understand it these are not people who are leaving their country because they particularly want to, they leave because things are so bad at home that literally risking their lives is better than staying. I imagine given the chance they'd prefer to stay at home, so at some point we need to help ensure that's possible.

In the mean time a refugee camp of sorts would allow them to remain in their own country and provide suitable housing etc, meaning they wouldn't have to leave in the first place.

YungOnions ,
@YungOnions@sh.itjust.works avatar

Cool, then we can use it for home and office stuff, and not the rest, then. Reducing some e-waste is better than reducing none.

Certainly it's the best choice currently, but lab grown meat will be the best option for the future, offering the best of both worlds - want to eat meat? Go ahead! Want to remain vegan? No problem!

YungOnions ,

Good enough for now, certainly. Hence my point about lab grown meat. It's meat. It's not an approximation, it's the real deal.

Imagine you’re walking through the forest. It’s been raining so the ground is muddy and slippery underfoot.

As you carefully pick your way over a particularly tricky bit of terrain you hear a crashing sound coming from the undergrowth, which clings to the side of a steep slope to your right.

Looking up with surprise which rapidly turns to shock you see a fully grown elephant sliding down the muddy slope towards you.

The last thing that goes through your head before your body is smashed into the ground by 4000kg of rapidly moving pachyderm is just how happy it looks.

Instagram Advertises Nonconsensual AI Nude Apps ( www.404media.co )

Instagram is profiting from several ads that invite people to create nonconsensual nude images with AI image generation apps, once again showing that some of the most harmful applications of AI tools are not hidden on the dark corners of the internet, but are actively promoted to users by social media companies unable or...

YungOnions ,
@YungOnions@sh.itjust.works avatar

It’s about consent. If you have no problem with people jerking off to your pictures, fine, but others do.

If you don’t want people to jerk off to your photos, don’t upload any. It happens with and without these apps.

You get that that opinion is pretty much the same as those who say if she didn’t want to be harrassed she shouldn’t have worn such provocative clothing!?

How about we allow people to upload whatever pictures they want and try to address the weirdos turning them into porn without consent, rather than blaming the victims?

YungOnions ,
@YungOnions@sh.itjust.works avatar

Maybe, but we can certainly help by, amongst many other things, not advertising AI Nude Apps on Instagram. Ultimately what we shouldn’t be doing is blaming the victims by implying they are somehow at fault for having the audacity to upload pictures of themselves to the Internet.

YungOnions ,
@YungOnions@sh.itjust.works avatar

The first one was all over the place. It felt both rushed and lacking in content at the same time, and the characterisation was some of the worst I can remember seeing in a ‘mainstream’ movie. By the time the credits rolled my partner and I just kinda sat there like WTF the did we just watch?

I don’t mind Synder’s stuff - he’s the very definition of style over substance for the most part, and that’s fine if you go into things expecting that, but this was a straight up mess. It almost felt like it got absolutely butchered by the editor or something. Zero interest in seeing the rest of the ‘trilogy’. How Netflix can be so apparently invested in this bollocknaise is a mystery. All I can imagine is that they’ve invested so much money in it, expecting it to be the next big thing that they’re now desperate to try and hype it up.

YungOnions ,
@YungOnions@sh.itjust.works avatar

So apparently this is going to be a musical? Which is an bold choice. I’m really curious how this goes down with the subset of men who have styled themselves after the Joker. I have a hard time equating cringe edge-lords and a rousing song-and-dance number.

YungOnions , (edited )
@YungOnions@sh.itjust.works avatar

I’m not against the sentiment, I’m against how you’re making it and the tone you’re taking whilst doing so.

Comments like *100 companies are responsible for over 70% of global warming.

But sure, blame the mother who buys ground chuck for her kids*. come across as needlessly confrontational and are an example of a fallacy of relevance. No one was blaming mothers buying meat for climate change. No one was advocating for businesses to be allowed To ignore their environmental responsibilities. You raised arguments that were irrelevant to the article, then doubled down by moving the goal-posts further to encompass additional societal problems like the lack of nutritional food in some parts of the US, all of which are irrelevant to the point of the article.

Also, my point stands: the world arguably should go vegan. Doesn’t mean they can. Your point doesn’t invalidate theirs.

YungOnions ,

I wonder how much land access affects this. It’s easy to build bigger properties when you’ve got a lot of land. The UK has much less land area compared to the US or even France, Spain, Sweden, Germany, Finland, Norway, Poland and Italy. Not all of that land is actually buildable, either.

Still not a great position to be in, either way.
