Apologies for the crash on the Gateway this morning lads, we had family members who needed to be at the airport early so obviously someone had to do a barrel roll and block off a major arterial to make it as stressful as possible.
Broader adoption of keeping cats safe at home would have large benefits for cat welfare, human health, local wildlife and even the economy. So, should cat owners be required to keep their pets contained to their property?...
That's a whole heap of words to say "maybe". On the other side of the world.
If you're happy being a selfish piece of shit, feel free to leave your cat roam. When Mittens gets hit by a car / contracts feline aids / otherwise meets a premature death, you can rest easy knowing that akshually it was probably pesticides.
"There's a possibility that some other factor may play a part in offsetting one of the negative impacts of free-range cats... therefore, all other positives of containing pets may be completely ignored"
- You, 2024
Foxes are also introduced, so I'd say cats everywhere are "better" because there's half a chance their numbers can be reduced through requirements for owners to contain them.
Also, cats can be baited too if required. And, IMO, it is at the point where it's required.
Travel to work today was running the gauntlet of red traffic accident icons and red lines on Google Maps
Time outside of peak is 26 minutes. Time in normal peak is 36 minutes. Today was 48 minutes, and thank dog I left home early this morning or I'd still be in it I think. Was getting worse by the minute. Watched my normal route have a 12 minute delay which turned to 15 minute before I opted to take the back way (along with everyone else apparently).
Two drips of rain and all the tailgaters find out just how little headroom they had for braking distances.
Way back in the day I got the shits with DCOA copying peoples videos, then taking the dollarydoos for appearances on the news etc. Many many years ago I started a competitor which always linked back to the original video and only ever embedded the YouTube / Vimeo / whatever clip so the original owner would get the revenue. Every request from news sites I forwarded to the original owner.
It actually took off and was doing really well for a while there, but then we moved house and I had basically no internet for 2'ish years. I couldnt keep up with the submissions because I could only do stuff when I was at work (and no one was looking)... and DCOA was just copying everything I uploaded anyway since I was linking to the original.
Anyway, seems most people care more about the thrill of seeing their video on the internet than the hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars of revenue they arent getting so I never bothered with it again even once we got internet back. I think YouTube made it harder for people to monetise their account too which didn't help. And lets face it, most people barely have the tech literacy to get an mp4 file off an SD card so even my beautiful instructional on "how to upload videos to YouTube" was never really followed. DCOA make it easy to submit and share so good on them I guess! They put the effort in to keep it going so enjoy the fruits.
Personally I made literally thousands in licensing fees from my old dashcam clips. Bought an RC car, new dashcams, and donated a grand or so to boob research at the request of a cyclist who got hit (they wanted nothing to do with news requests but told me to go ahead. I suggested I donate his half of the cash to a charity and he opted for breast cancer aus).
The car is stripped of everything save a steering wheel and an iPad for the sake of minimalism... which people quickly realise actually kinda sucks and are solving with trips to AliExpress and Bunnings.
Turns out other manufacturers were leaving things like indicator stalks and gauge clusters in the car for a reason.
Aside from the general... taint... of a car brand associated with Elon Musk and his Just Musk Things, these were two major factors that put me off a Tesla. Feeling a little schadenfreude when I see posts like the ones above in the Tesla groups.
The whole "can only charge to 80%" thing was another, though I think they've solved that by using BYD batteries now. I just cut out the middle man and bought BYD.
Why are Australian companies so shit at customer service?
Need to buy a part for a unit. In classic fashion, its stitched up with a single supplier in Australia to maximise profit and minimise competition.
Locate the AU part number by cross referencing the original EU manufacturer parts list against the AU part descriptions. Find it listed as "in stock" on the website of the only supplier in AU of this brand but of course no pricing.
Contact this "only seller in AU" who refuse to disclose either price or availability as we are not a business customer of theirs...
Sure, but before we proceed I just want to know if its in stock within Australia as per the website
I can't disclose that information as you aren't a business customer of ours
Fine, how do we become a business customer of yours?
Well you need to email us your business application of course
Right, so what particular email shall I send this to? And what application are you referring to?
... I am not sure, let me get back to you on that
Gave up on the "customer service" number and contacted their generic sales email instead. Obviously they can not assist either because we are not a business customer of theirs, but they can refer us to one of their wholesalers who can. That wholesaler is literally two blocks from me.
Contact local wholesaler who quotes a price of ~$750+GST, with a 5-7 business day delivery ETA assuming its in stock within Australia. They can't confirm that its in Australia mind you, but believe its "probably" in Melbourne.
Time spent thus far: 2 hours or so.
Gave up and bought it from a US retailer. Click, click, pay.
Total cost of $260 AUD, delivered in 3 business days. I bought it yesterday PM and it's already been collected from the retailer, has been sorted at the local DHL, and is currently on its way to the airport.
Traffic sure was arsehole this morning... Everyone impatient to get back to work after the long weekend I guess. Accidents everywhere, tailgating like crazy all over the shop. I guess not that much different to normal really but definitely an extra edge of angst.
The neighbours have recently bought quad bikes. Cause apparently between whipper snippers, lawn mowers, leaf blowers, and hedge trimmers we dont have enough slappy piston noise in the vicinity already.
I've had YouTube Music since it was Google Music, but the price has recently doubled and at the same time I've started noticing my "Radio" keeps playing the same dozen songs over and over again. Started to feel like I was listening to Triple M....
I ran Subsonic for years, and now run Plex for other stuff which is fed by - among other things - Lidarr, but honestly having to chase down my own stuff sucks. I'll never match the millions of songs they have on offer.
Actually, just fired up Subsonic again for fun. Man it hasnt changed in years, but the server software still works perfectly on my test box here at work that has ~5k tracks. The OG Android app hasnt been updated since 2018 yet works flawlessly. Maybe I will just end up hosting the damn tunes myself again.
I really don't like rebates, because they're temporary and it just means the impact next year will be twice as severe.
It also means companies will up there prices because rebate money means less complaints and defaults on bills so obviously that's a green flag to up prices.
