Holy shit, this is a REALLY misleading headline.

if it was just him quitting, that would be terrible; it would be an anti-war person giving up their power to legally obstruct the war.

It's "his opposition National Unity party will withdraw from the coalition government". Unless this article is missing something, wouldn't breaking up the coalition just basically completely paralyse Israel??

Oh you must not have seen Vex's memes! I might not be as funny as them but I do my best; they're a Lancer (Mech RPG) memelord pretty well known for making memes about the game that were good enough to actually get a significant amount of players into it.

Here, check these out

If you have advice for how to reword it so that it's

-Easily comprehensible

-Does not have loopholes that rules lawyers will exploit

Then I'd be happy to correct any flaws you identify!

And you're not the first to bring up the Wyrmling point, however tying the power of a player character to their age is a terrible idea because that would make it exceedingly difficult to level up during a campaign.

Holy fuck. I knew that AI did use above average amounts of power, but THIRTY FUCKING PERCENT added to the total emissions of a data giant like Microsoft????? That's absurd! How the hell did they create something so inefficient??

Americans are choking on surging fast-food prices. "I can't justify the expense," one customer says ( www.cbsnews.com )

Kevin Roberts remembers when he could get a bacon cheeseburger, fries and a drink from Five Guys for $10. But that was years ago. When the Virginia high school teacher recently visited the fast-food chain, the food alone without a beverage cost double that amount....

TacticsConsort ,
@TacticsConsort@yiffit.net avatar

Yeah, I love my local pizza place and I'm on good terms with the owner, but the prices have gone up enough that I've set a hard limit of only going there once a month, and there are some menu items that I explicitly just will not buy because they're so overpriced.

Cost frankly does define my dietary habits. The number one reason that I don't decide to grab the odd piece of vegan chicken to put in a bagel is because it costs 50% more than regular chicken.

I mean, even as a DnD player, I appreciate that you DO need to turn a profit as a company, and I enjoy my favourite hobby getting wider attention. I'm actually not opposed to them making this into a bigger franchise because I think that it IS suitable to fill that sort of Marvel role, contrary to the article. It has clearly defined heroes and villains, iconic designs, and very flexible storytelling, all of which CAN be compared to a more mature Marvel. Making a handful of recognisible heroes and villains and promoting them honestly seems like a perfectly sensible and legitimate business tactic.

HOWEVER.

As a DnD player, I also actively dislike the story design in most official content because it's painfully generic. Everything is made to be very comfortably within the realm of mass appeal and staying within the realms of conventional fantasy. They have unspoken rules and tropes that they simply Do Not Violate and as a result they struggle to craft stories that aren't predictable. They are noticeably complete shit at having any idea how to make a force for good that's more powerful than the players that isn't used as a punching bag to make the players feel like they're in danger. And my point is that they COULD and should take more risks when doing storywriting and character design, because the nature of DnD is that even if you totally fuck something up, because everyone runs their own worlds a retcon isn't going to destroy everything- and more than that, writing out a story, while time-consuming and requiring effort, is nowhere near the money sink that a movie is. It's fine to take risks! Defying conventions is OK! It's completely fine if not everyone likes each product, so long as it's well-made on the whole!

Otherwise the game is also super unbalanced (I know this because I have extremely extensively created homebrew for it, I can tell you EXACTLY how and where it is unbalanced), although this isn't as bad as it would be in a lot of other games because you won't really notice the balance issues if you're just playing a casual game with your friends. If one of your friends is trying to play the game optimally though, then they can rapidly make the game unplayable by taking advantage of especially unbalanced parts of the game.

And this is to say nothing of the fact that the absolute greatest strength of DnD is the fact that players can do whatever they want. So trying to make stuff that tells players they need to act a certain way is only going to diminish that strength.

TacticsConsort ,
@TacticsConsort@yiffit.net avatar

While you make fundamentally good points, I think there is a core reason that balance is important to me: DnD is a multiplayer game, not a singleplayer game.

I actually think it's fine that different classes are strong at different levels! The entire premise of Wizard is that they're a squishy who will die if they're sneezed on at level 1, who grows into a reality-warping god by level 20. Having someone that needs to be looked after at low levels and can then look after the team at high levels encourages teamwork!

The reason that I say DnD is so badly unbalanced is because once level 5 comes around? Casters very, VERY firmly become way better than non-casters for two reasons. Casters have AoE damage, and casters have utility. Non-casters have no utility, and because they also really struggle to increase AC, they can't function in any role except for single-target damage. A good level 5 caster can make the rest of the party feel really lackluster because they can do in one turn what the rest of the party needs 4 or 5 turns to do (HP and AC are much less of an issue at this point too). And this gap only gets wider and wider with every passing level, which rapidly makes it less and less fun to play a non-caster.

Once level 13 hits, anyone who isn't a full caster is completely irrelevant. That is not fun for anyone who isn't a full caster. Hell, it's SO badly broken at this level that it's almost certainly the reason why Baldur's Gate 3 only goes up to level 12- and that game already does a huge amount of buffing martials and nerfing casters. A 13th level caster can instantly beat pretty much any encounter not explicitly designed to bully them, and even then there's a good chance they find a way to solo the encounter on turn 1 anyways.

I bet you could emulate other old consoles too, the Sega genesis had a phenomenal library that should all be easy enough to play on a keyboard.

Huh. Well, that's an interesting turn of events.

I mean, I'm not a lawyer, but the basic premise seems solid. US has that whole 'corporations are people' shtick going on, and... well, guess now it's time for that ruling to become inconvenient for the government.

TacticsConsort ,
@TacticsConsort@yiffit.net avatar

Pretty good article. And it does make a lot of sense, too. I may not work in the supply chain and logistics, but I know enough guys who do to confirm that if you don't have a good company-level relationship with all the other companies in your supply chain, then you are setting yourself up for HUGE production issues. And that issue has got to be ten times worse when you're not just buying copies of an existing component, but trying to design a completely new one that will need to be repeatedly iterated and tested.

Couple that up with asking your management team to learn something as fundamental yet technically demanding and experience-based as DEALING WITH LIMITED MONEY (how the fuck did this happen. How did you get used to Blank Cheques of all things), and you've got a recipe for disaster even before we get into the upper management corruption.

5e has an advantage of not requiring doctorate in quantum physics to run ( ttrpg.network )

I would usually be sad to see another original RPG go 5e compatible but Neuroshima was infamously poorly designed ruleset, possibly worse than Shadowrun. I probably won't be running it, but may steal statblocks for my 5e game if I need weird stuff again.

TacticsConsort ,
@TacticsConsort@yiffit.net avatar

Blue cheese is a bit strong for most people, I can respect that, I'm one of those people. The trick is knowing what to pair with blue cheese to help balance it out a bit.

You want my recommendation for how to enjoy some store-bought blue cheese? Try it on a burger, with some sliced avocado instead of lettuce. The meat and the dense fruit balance out the blue beautifully, you get all the nice taste of a blue cheese without feeling like your mouth got nuked from orbit by smelly cheese.

I feel he's right. Youtube alone completely exhausted my patience to be advertised to in 2021, and when you're fed up with something and it keeps getting shoved down your throat at every corner then you get annoyed at first, and then you really start to actively despise it, and then it becomes completely unbearable. I absolutely cannot stand adverts anymore, including video sponsors. If I see a particularly obnoxious advert I'll go out of my way to AVOID the products in question, if I couldn't avoid paying attention to it. I'd like to go on record and say, absolutely fuck the electronic billboard outside my workplace, that piece of shit makes it dangerous to drive at night because it's so bright and I hope to god it gets vandalized beyond repair.

Most games that I try these days were recommended to me by people who I know personally. BG3 was one of very few exceptions, and honestly? You know what sold me on BG3 and made me think 'this is going to be a really high-quality game?' It was when there was a news article discussing the controversies after they confirmed that you could get railed by a druid. Not even something I'm interested in, but that design choice actively showed they were including niche options that not many people would pick into their RPG. That was what made me go 'Oh shit, if you can do that, you can probably do a lot of other things! It's an RPG with actual impactful dialog choices! They weren't just throwing that out as an advertising buzz!'

Can confirm, not going into higher education and getting an apprenticeship was the bar none best decision that I EVER made.

Aerospace manufacturing; the apprenticeship paid for me to do exactly the courses and qualifications that I’d need for the manufacturing (instead of me having to pay to do those things) and had a guaranteed job at the end so long as I passed said courses. Way easier than a full college or university degree and I was making money the whole way through.

The +16 Persuasion Silver Dragoness one of my players made (+6 cha, Expertise, level 13 total. Gotta say, I’m a blue collar who also builds sensitive machinery, have been doing so for six years now.

There is a VERY sharp divide in how well I consider myself to have mastered certain aspects of the job.

Someone fucking kill me: I’m doing this job for the first time and I’m having to spend ages sifting through our processes that may not be documented in enough detail to do the job perfectly. The job is legally safe because I’m following the rules but god I don’t like it. Takes about three times as long as a ‘normal’ task.

This is fine: I’ve done the job enough to know how everything goes together, what torque to use where, and if there’s anything I should really be doing that isn’t in the instructions, or if there’s an instruction mismatch.

Mastery: I can not only do the job, I actually understand the explicit purpose and function of everything I’m putting together on an intimate level, and can use my knowledge of that purpose and function to make god damn sure that what I’m putting out is top quality. As probably the least sensitive example of this, this is stuff like knowing that the particular brand of no-mixing-needed paint we use can sometimes develop a sediment layer of its’ pigments on the bottom that requires you to mix it with a stick for the paint to perform properly, and that you can tell when the paint is experiencing this issue because it’ll be off-colour due to the lack of pigment; and if you don’t resolve this issue the paint won’t adhere to surfaces correctly and is liable to flake off.

I’ve been doing this for six years and there are only a handful of aspects of my job I consider myself to have complete mastery over. I don’t think I’m the best worker out there, not by a long shot, but to me the idea that you can just lose and replace your workforce when dealing with complicated machinery is about as stupid as the notion that AI can replicate the human mind (It can’t unless you abandon the von-neumann computer design).

Hot damn. So I kind of understand why the Russians would dismiss this as a lie or a threat because yknow. War in Ukraine, Trump, etc, relations are bad to put it politely.

But can we talk about what kind of terrifying flex of power that is from US Intelligence? It’s one thing to predict a terror attack on your own soil- sure your citizens quite rightfully won’t like the privacy violations, but the national authorities are going to help you; so if your intelligence agency is worth the name it should stop most attacks.

But can you imagine having information access that’s so damn good you can not only predict a terror attack in a nation that has an extremely vested interest in not letting you know what they’re doing because they’re running a war that you (and everyone else) don’t like, but you feel completely confident TELLING THEM, which could risk your information sources if they’re not properly hidden. This is like the Foreign Intelligence equivalent of being so far ahead of your opponent in a game that you start giving them sincere advice on how to play so that they don’t get thrashed too badly.

For quality, I think it would be quite sensible to include figures from a few other countries. These findings mean very little when they lack context; we need to know how they compare to other big economies like the US, UK, Germany, Italy, Russia, China (if you can get accurate data on Russia and China), and Japan.

It’s got to be DnD- I don’t just play it, I don’t just DM it, I’ve actively studied how it’s designed and balanced in order to make content that is better than the official stuff. I’ve found and ironed out critical flaws in how the game is set up and I’ve made pieces of homebrew content that are larger than entire books.

This is a hell of a bold claim to make, but I believe that I have come to understand the game better than its own Dev Team.

Honestly, treating 'Evil' as just self-interested to the point of being willing to place your own desires above the wellbeing of others is actually one of my favourite takes on it, because

A) It makes it legitimately challenging but also very rewarding to be Good (I mean, what NPC isn't going to like someone that actually successfully respects their wishes and needs when helping them?)

B) It opens up Evil as a legitimate option for party members that isn't an instant dealbreaker

C) It allows you to run creatures meant to be 'inherently evil' (devils and chromatic dragons in particular) as assholes but not completely unthinking and unreasonable, which makes them a LOT scarier- these are intelligent creatures that should be just as witty and dangerous to hold a conversation with as they are to fight. A dragon that's undeniably a selfish bastard but can make compelling cases to try and out-RP the players and get them to fall into traps or hesitate to fight them, or a Devil that knows just how to play the role of a corruptor, someone who tempts the party and plays to win the big game.
