If you want to avoid specific instances, it's best to go to an instance that defederates from those instances. That's the power of the Fediverse - you get to choose an instance that aligns with your values and moderation style :)
There are instances and communities that are well-moderated and care deeply about such problems. I think for instance lemmy.blahaj.zone and beehaw.org. But don't take my word for it, just try to look for an instance that aligns with your values. The more people choose such instances, the more people will gather around them by default :)
The block feature only hides posts from those instances communities, not comments (unless you block individual users, but then you have to block a whole lot of users).
Also users from those instances will still have an influence on your feed via their voting. For example if you think an instance is a source of political propaganda, they can still promote that political agenda via voting.
Defederation is a more effective solution if you want to avoid an instance.
The way to shut down propaganda is defederation and diligent moderation. That takes some actions from admins and moderators, who as you note are mostly volunteers. So do your best to support your local mods and admins in doing that or volunteer yourself :)
I'm so incredibly grateful that the EU is really trying to fix the internet. Also grateful to organization like the EFF that try to do the same. I recently became a donor as I think their work really is critical.
Can you believe the shit these companies would do if it wasn't for the EU and their regulation? It'd be a dystopia (well, more than it already is at least).
The internet has made a lot of people armchair experts happy to offer their perspective with a degree of certainty, without doing the work to identify gaps in their knowledge. Often the mark of genuine expertise is knowing the limitations of your knowledge....
Software engineers, supposed "experts", can't even agree among each other how to structure and build software, let alone agree with project managers, users and other laypeople.
Crazy thing is that doing it the wrong way is the best way to have job security. Fire me? Yea, well, you'll never find anyone else that knows this spaghetti as well as I do.
I don't think I've missed the point. I did not read the post as being somehow in contrast to what you do in usual political contexts (like voting). I don't really see what in the post suggests that.
I don't disagree that there are other things that you can do as well. Again, I wasn't criticising the post, just adding something. Another version of my comment could be "Yk another way you can contribute to your community? Voting."
That's fine, your opinion is as valid as mine. So please don't degrade mine by calling my comment "poisoning" or "adding nothing". I wish you had started with your last two comments which aren't as harsh.
According to Steam's own survey, Linux is still less than 2% of the user base and it doesn't look like it's changing much. I don't know how it has looked historically though but probably not too much different.
Realistically speaking, it's only a small percentage of people who bought the Steam Deck, and they probably already had a gaming PC, which means they probably had a Windows PC.
So unfortunately, I don't think Linux gaming is anywhere close.
Not sure what client you use but in the web UI you can click the Show Source button to see the source markdown that produced what you see, if you're wondering how someone else achieved some formatting.
Telemetry was added to create an aggregate count of searches by category to broadly inform search feature development. These categories are based on 20 high-level content types, such as "sports,” "business," and "travel". This data will not be associated with specific users and will be collected using OHTTP to remove IP...
There are ways to prioritise feature development that don't involve telemetry and I'd even say they are better than telemetry. For instance, surveys, user interviews, usability tests and that sort of thing.
I've seen a lot of people on here be teased for difficulty expressing themselves. Either people complain "you're using big person words to describe mundane things" when they're aiming for precision or "woah, we don't need that damn wall of text" when they're aiming for clarity. It's like people just want to complain.
This varies from person to person and from context to context. So inevitably when someone online writes in one style, someone else will prefer another style and maybe even complain about it.
Just try to be tolerant of other people to a reasonable extent and whatever way you write is fine.

What would it take to get a "Steam but TV/movies instead of games"? I feel like if I could see reviews of movies and I could buy them and download them and have them forever and buy them on sale and all that good stuff, it wouldn't be so bad.
How come none of the streaming services have gone for this model? Steam is swimming in money, surely this method could work?
Why is licensing so easy with games though? It really seems like there's this arbitrary difference in how the video games and streaming industries work.
Apparently researcher believe it landed on an ice cap and was transported by glaciers to where it came to rest. So unfortunately any crater melted away thousands of years ago 😅
There are a lot of tanky posts coming from lemmy.ml. Their whole purpose seems to be to troll and spread their bullshit far and wide. They are nearly as bad as the alt-right. They argue in bad faith and celebrate authoritarian oppression. The beehaw mods might want to consider defederating.
Just out of curiosity, could someone link an example of one of these posts? I don't see them myself much but I think I may have just blocked the communities where it happens.
... wow. On the one hand, this is quite heavily downvoted (by several lemmy.ml users too), so that's something. On the other hand, it is a little concerning that multiple admins of lemmy.ml are among the upvoters on that post (yea yea I looked at the votes, let's not pretend they're private when they aren't).
Also, check some of the removed comments (you can see them in the modlog). Like this comment that said this:
There is a massive difference between liking a concept or the implementation of that concept. Communism is an utopia, socialism is seen as the way to get there. Socialism did not proof to be viable in reality, with dictators claiming to set up communist states, while not setting up working socialist societies. The thing is that implementing such a society includes a massive restructuring of government and ownership of goods. Those measures have a very strong tendency to dissolve in civil wars and dictatorships. It is of course an option to label anyone who doesn’t want to give up resources an enemy of the class / state and imprison and torture them, but it does not create a stable society in which people actually choose to live, if they can decide on that. Shit is complex.
This was removed with the reason "Rule 1, 2", which presumably refers to the "no bigotry" and "Be respectful, especially when disagreeing" site-wide rules on lemmy.ml. I mean, you can certainly disagree with the comment if you want, but it doesn't contain any bigotry or disrespect if you ask me. This feels like political censoring on the part of the lemmy.ml admins. Not a great look.

Unfortunately no. The question is a simplification of the P versus NP problem.
The problem lies in having to prove that no method exists that is easy. How do you prove that no matter what method you use to solve the sudoku, it can never be done easily? You'll need to somehow prove that no such method exists, but that is rather hard. In principle, it could be that there is some undiscovered easy way to solve sudokus that we don't know about yet.
I'm using sudokus as an example here, but it could be a generic problem. There's also a certain formalism about what "easy" means but I won't get into it further, it is a rather complicated area.
Interestingly, it involves formal languages a lot, which is funny as you wouldn't think computer science and linguistics have a lot in common, but they do in a lot of ways actually.
Well it just so happens that the definition of "easy" in the actual problem is essentially "fast". So under that definition, checking every single possible solution is not an "easy" method.
I think you've misunderstood 😅. Answering "no" to that question corresponds to P != NP (there are problems that are easy to verify but not easy to solve), while "yes" means P = NP (if a solution is easy to check, the problem must be easy to solve). So I am saying most people and most scientists believe P != NP exactly as you say.
To be fair we don't know exactly what he did. From what I've read it sounds like he somehow harassed an employee in the production crew, which honestly should be reason for exclusion. Assuming that is what happened, it doesn't seem unjust and I don't think the other participants should try to justify such behaviour.
