I believe instances generate the preview as soon as it's federated. The problem is that if you have many followers, each of their instances will try to generate a preview at the same time
Just got a steam deck and immediately checked out the desktop mode, and I was somewhat surprised to see KDE and pacman as opposed to GNOME and apt, I have nothing against the former though a strong preference for the latter, anyone know why Volvo went in this direction?
You can get the switcher in KDE, but you can't get a real equivalent to gnome's view. In gnome you can press super to get the overview, but you can also type to open programs. There's no way to do that in KDE afaik. It's the main thing keeping me from KDE
I've run passwd and sudo su; passwd to change password for root and my account. Password is set correctly when using sudo and su but whenever I get prompted by pkexec it accepts only the old password. I've rebooted my system to make sure it was not an issue....
Statcounter reports that Windows 11 continues to lose its market share for the second month in a row. Windows 10, meanwhile, is gaining more users and is now back above the 70% mark.
Windows just sucks at handling Bluetooth. It's ridiculous that you can't change audio codecs, or choose between handsfree and high quality audio. You have to let windows guess at both
You can change flatpak permissions with flatseal (you'll need to install it). A lot of them have absolutely braindead defaults
It's really not great to get in the habit of installing random debs from the Internet. Aside from being a massive security issue, you'll never get updates. If mint repos don't get updated though, I suppose that's the easiest workaround
Yeah when you're downloading from sites like those, there's not a security risk anymore. The thing is that Linux software generally expects you to be using a package manager, so it doesn't update itself. When you download and install debs, you lose auto update functionality. But when you're on a distro like mint with old packages, that doesn't really matter since you're not getting up to date software through the repos anyway
I'm sick of random capitalisations mid sentence. I'm sick of common words being replaced by less common ones or even downright nonsense. I'm sick of it taking three attempts to successfully get the word I want. I swear it's been like this for five years or more. Can we have a better version yet, or at least the old one back?
I got it to type fuck just now when I started swiping from g instead of f, so it wouldn't put a d. if yours is typing guck though, that probably won't work
Do you have separate scaling factors on the two monitors? I need 100% scaling on one and 175% scaling on the other, which I've not been able to figure out under x11
I always just use Simple Voice Chat, but it's really smart for you to use a browser-based one to support Geyser. I never considered that before, it's super clever (though it is still a lot less convenient when you're on java)
My gf and I have had discussions about teaching morals to kids. In that vein, I asked myself, would I teach piracy to my kids? Yes, it’s technically illegal and carries inherent risks. But so does teenage sex carry the risks of teenage pregnancy, and so we have an obligation to children to teach them how to practice safe sex....
It’s a (better IMO) derivative of Ubuntu, but it uses the Mint desktop environment by default while Ubuntu uses Gnome. To a casual user, most distros are pretty similar other than their defaults. Those defaults aren’t even particularly hard to change. For example, switching mint to Gnome is one command and a couple GUI clicks: itsfoss.com/install-gnome-linux-mint/
I don’t use web lemmy so I’m not sure about the filtering, but I’m relatively confident that none allow keyword following. That’s something that would have to be implemented on the backend
