The word "yacht" is misleading. It was a 15 meter charter sailboat, of the type Sun Odyssey 519. If you are looking for rich fucks to make fun of, you won't find them on these kind of boats.
I hope they bill Sony ten times of what they are losing out on now. They need to set a precedent that no other publisher will want to repeat what Sony did.
After a student leader of the historic Tiananmen Square protests entered a 2022 congressional race in New York, a Chinese intelligence operative wasted little time enlisting a private investigator to hunt for any mistresses or tax problems that could upend the candidate’s bid, prosecutors say....
This happens in Europe too. I hope the european agencies are similarly engaged in protecting dissidents. There have been numerously stories as of late about China using their embassy as a 'chinese police station'.

I find this kind of reporting very important, as it highlights the ways in which Ukrainian society has improved, but also what still needs improvement. I hope articles like this are encouraging to those that fight in Ukraine for a more just and accepting society. Meanwhile in Russia, the only reports we get from there is that the murder-rate of ex-prisoners has spiked 900%.
A week after he broke with the majority of House Republicans and voted to send $60.8 billion in aid to Ukraine, Representative Max Miller took the stage at a performing arts center in his Ohio district bracing for backlash....
What avenues of escalation are left to Putin? 80% of his army is tied up in Ukraine, the rest is needed for border patrol. All russian men that would join the army voluntarily have already joined, so a big mobilization would see the support for the war plummet. And after that, all that is left is the big N word. And there are plenty of reasons why Putin doesn't want to use those.
On the other hand, letting Ukraine lose will lead to much more instability in the future.
Edit: above comment accused 'lefties' of wanting WW3.
Also, just because Ukraine loses the traditional war, doesn’t mean that the fighting will stop.
Also also, what greater threat to european peace and stability is there than a bunch of former allies, who are battle-hardened, traumatized, right next to EU borders and are feeling betrayed by their ‘western partners’?
A russia-funded network of right-wing parties, aimed at breaking up the european union, recently invigorated by their success of stopping a unified response to russia’s invasion.
But haven’t you heard? The US has already committed LITERAL BILLIONS to Ukraine, and what did it get us? Nothing! Just imagine if that money would’ve been spent here! We could have spent it on schools Some poor CEO could’ve had fat bonuses! Maybe we could’ve cancelled the medical debt of 100 people We could’ve spent more on covering up environmental damage without doing anything against the companies that caused that damage.
I tell you, if we wouldn’t have spent that money on Ukraine, we could’ve medicare for all, student loan forgiveness, functioning infrastructure and a sane republican party. But because we spent those billions on Ukraine, sadly, we had to budget a little and got none of the above. If only we still had that money, all of our woes would be over!
If the United States and its allies can rush to Israel’s defense in the skies, shooting down dozens of drones and missiles fired by Iran, why can’t they do the same for Ukraine — which has suffered under Russia’s missile attacks for more than two years?...
It really is a shame how spineless european politicians are, to not give Edward Snowden protection in europe. I bet a whole bunch of politicians are happy that he faded out of the collective mind, so they don’t have defend their indefensible standpoint of not giving Snowden amnesty.
It also sucks that there is no recourse against politicians that are clearly biased in their decisionmaking.
I know that it is a can of worms politically, but now the man the whole world owes the wake-up call that were his leaks to, is forced to live under Putin.
For The Crew especially, an offline version would’ve been easily doable, as in, most online feature of The Crew feel optional to begin with. To just drive around the map or race against AI, no online features are required.
an offline version would’ve been easily doable, as in, most online feature of The Crew feel optional to begin with.
I never claimed that it was easy in a technical sense, just in a mechanical sense. But to double down on my point, if Ivory Tower had created The Crew with the possibility of ripping out the online mode entirely in mind, then the structure and the mechanics of the game would’ve made it very easy to do so.
I much prefer uMatrix over NoScript, it is way more intuitive. And even though uMatrix is no longer updated, it still works better than NoScript for me. My Firefox Android has gotten soft-locked by NoScript in regular intervals. Since they enabled uMatrix for Firefox Android again, I have had no such issues.
It has to be noted that this applies to US citizens. For EU citizens the arbitration rules do not apply (that at least is how I read the ToS). Instead, they get an EU body that handles disputes:
If you reside in the European Union, you may also be entitled to submit your complaint to the European Commission’s Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) Platform or the Out-of-Court Dispute Settlement (“OCDS”) mechanism under DSA Article 21.

I think that is the biggest issue with Mastodon and federation in general: Limited discoverability. I’ve spoken to a few artists that still post on Twitter. They won’t join Mastodon, because it is so hard to develop consistent reach.
After having spent some time on Lemmy and learning of the intricacies of the different Lemmy instances, I think the landing page for the Lemmyverse could do with some streamlining. I remember that back when I joined, the only information I used to decide on an instance to join was the user count, the signup policy and the...
While I think that many are ok with ‘trying out’ Lemmy by joining a random instance at first, I also have seen numerous threads in which users are complaining about not being able to subscribe to communities they are interested in, only to be told that the instance hosting the communities they are interested in is blocked by their instance. I don’t think it makes for a good first impression to join a Lemmy instance, only to be immediately told that you need to join another instance to see the content you are interested in.

“You treat them like animals, that’s exactly how they’ll behave.”
This fits aptly here in my opinion. If you want Ukraine to play by your rules, you have to givethem the tools to do so. Otherwise they will do whatever they can to keep up the pressure without your support and without your rules.
So in case you are wondering if Russia and China were caring about the people in Gaza, this vote shows that they are clearly not. They’d rather take this opportunity that would see the US taking the most confrontantional stance against Israel since the start of the invasion into Gaza, to dunk on the US.
The US-led draft, which took weeks to reach a vote, stated the “imperative” for “an immediate and sustained ceasefire to protect civilians on all sides”, facilitating “essential” aid delivery and supporting ongoing talks between Israel and Hamas militants to create a sustainable end to the hostilities, tied to the release of hostages.
The vetoed draft would have made imperative an immediate and sustained ceasefire in Gaza, with an “urgent need to expand the flow of humanitarian assistance” to all civilians and lifting “all barriers” to delivering aid
How exactly would’ve this bill ‘not helped in any way’?
It calls for a ceasefire if Israeli hostages are released and for immediate aid to the people of Gaza. If the US starts off at A, support Israel unconditionally, and you start of at B, ceasefire now, and the US gets slowly pressured your way until ultimately, the US enters a resolution that is much closer to B than to A, you don’t stomp your foot and say ‘that’s not B!’ and reject it, if you really care about civilians in Gaza, who are starving right now, only in the hopes that in a few months time, the US might’ve fully moved over to B. When Israel has already invaded Rafah and many Gazans have starved.
Ah yes, let’s classify calling for aid deliveries to the people of Gaza ‘not helping’, because not all demands are met. Fuck those starving people, we want all of our points met.
US could literally tell Israel to open the border and let aid in any time.
But they won’t. End of story. What are you going to do about it? Get all the help for the people currently suffering that you can get, or stomp your foot while Gazans starve? I know what you’ve chosen.
Wrong. Russia and China are the ones aiding in a genocide with that veto. They want Israel to continue to slaughter Gazans, because it will reflect negatively on the US in the public eye. As if Russia and China would really care about brown muslims getting massacred. The US-backed resolution would’ve brought aid and charted a path to a ceasefire. It’s not the ideal resolution, but in politics you will never get to ideal. You take what you can get and work from there. But I’m well aware that your primary motivation is dunking on the US as well, so you’ll fit right in with Russia and China.
Where did I say that the US are the good guys? My point is that this resolution was brought in by the ‘bad’ guys and held a significant step towards the ‘good’ guys side. But Russia and China proved with their veto that they are not interested in getting help to Gazans, they are more interested in continuing the status quo, so that the US is further humiliated.
Why don’t you wish for unicorns while you’re at it? That’s about as likely to happen as Israel, after all this time, suddenly deciding to pull back from Gaza.
People that died in torture chambers, in civilan houses that got hit by rockets, people that have been deported or incarcerated because they have been deemed to be opposedto russian occupation.
Just onesuch example is written about here: theguardian.com/…/a-murdered-writer-his-secret-di…
The goal of the Democrats in the US has been to send much more aid much sooner than the Republicans. It’s the Republicans that want to see Ukraine fail and who are dragging out this stalemate.
