New homeowner, just sorta winging it... ( lemmy.world )

Having never owned a house or really had a yard of my own, I got pretty excited and decided to do some ad-hoc landscaping. Built some raised beds for vegetables, and just laying in some organic shaped in-ground beds for low water decorative plants. Gonna fill the rest in with gravel. Any pointers?

I love how you made the raised beds. Where do you get poles like that? Iā€™ve been unable to find them

Window sills material

I'm trying to make my own window sills in our new house. We have windows rather deep so depth is around 9in and wide - 42/60in. I'm looking at read oak vs douglas fir. Red oak is mainly available in sub 8in cuts. The only one I found in 9in is 3/4 thick. Would that be sufficient to support plant pots or potentially human sitting...

NataliePortland Mod ,
@NataliePortland@lemmy.ca avatar

3/4ā€ of fir will be plenty strong enough that it wonā€™t break . I have a stool made of 3/4ā€ cedar and thatā€™s close enough. I think yes plant pots could leave small marks though thatā€™s true. Really you canā€™t go wrong with red oak. Itā€™s strong and cheap and you can even stain it. I say Doug fir will work but you might as well go for red oak. Will last forever.

I made my computer desk from pine and you can see letters on it from where Iā€™ve written.
Yaa go for hardwood

When a person tells you that a loved one has passed, ask what the their name was and say it back.
It can be awkward when that comes up and you might not know how to respond best. Iā€™ve found that most people donā€™t want you to feel bad for them, but them saying their name and having a chance to talk about them is often a nice thing.

Iā€™m in healthcare so death comes up a lot. ā€œDavid. Thatā€™s a nice name. Where was he from?ā€

The worldā€™s biggest plant to pull carbon from the sky just opened | Experts say weā€™ll need carbon capture to offset stubborn emissions that canā€™t easily be cut with existing green technology. ( wapo.st )

the plant is designed to remove 36,000 metric tons of carbon each year, the equivalent of taking 8,600 cars off the road....

NataliePortland ,
@NataliePortland@lemmy.ca avatar

Carbon capture is hands down the worst plan we have. At the rate this carbon capture plant operates it would take 100,000 of them just to offset the emission from cars alone. 100,000 plants . Imagine how much metal had to be mined for those. How much product needs to be shipped and produced and built. How much ecological damage and emissions would just building them some create? Then you realize that they use lots of power to run them. Most of the worldā€™s electricity still comes from fossil fuels. So to offset those emissions you now need even more plants. Where are you going to put 100,000 plus plants like this? Do you know how hard it is to get these kinds of things approved? Whose land is this going on?

Thatā€™s not even the stupidest part. The idea is that these plants will suck out the carbon and use a - I canā€™t believe Iā€™m about to say this- a pipeline. A PIPELINE! To pump carbon dioxide underground. I mean who has ever heard of a pipeline leaking, right? And putting it underground? Do we have even the foggiest idea of the potential effect of that? What if it just seeps out through the ground and back into the atmosphere, choking out all the life along the way?

Now if thatā€™s the stupidest part, the evil part is this: carbon capture is an excuse to continue fossil fuel. Why should anyone stop if we are capturing it? That means the reason these fuckjng things are going to get approved is because the goddamn oil companies are backing them! Itā€™s worse than those worthless carbon offsets since this can actually cause so much harm to the world.

Iā€™m so pissed off about carbon capture.

Do conservatives just want us all to give in to our enemies? And then let them take Poland and eventually the US too? Bro. Some people's kids. The US has been at war in one form or another since the 50's. We have fought proxy wars against them as recently as Syria in 2019 and please don't forget that they are regularly attacking the US through ransomware attacks against hospitals, local governments, water bureaus, and banks. They are also attacking our elections through misinformation and bribery. They have directly threatened our country with nuclear war as recently as last year. If conservatives don't love our homeland enough to defend it than thank Biden for your safety.

The President of the United States, Joe Biden Graduated 76th out of a Class of 85 Students ( medium.com )

It seems that the older and more senile Joe Biden gets, the more he expects us to forget about his woeful academic record and the fact that he barely squeaked through law school. Itā€™s just the mechanics of the back. You know how youā€™re supposed to keep your back straight when you pick up a heavy object? A pack on the front would strain the back by pulling it the other way and it would be uncomfortable.

NataliePortland ,
@NataliePortland@lemmy.ca avatar

On one hand, Biden is doing more for the climate than any other US president, but on the other hand this is clearly not enough. While Americans are blocked from buying the affordable Chinese EVs that would shift us away from fossil fuels, Biden tells American auto makers they have until 2030 to ā€˜ramp up productionā€™ of EVs. People want to drive clean cars but more than anything they want to afford. American EVs are still unaffordable for most people and this move will do little to change that now or after 2030 when there will still be no incentive for Ford/ GM to compete with China. To be clear, this is far more than Trump or Haley or Phillips would do and thatā€™s a step in the right direction but we need giant leaps right now. Tell me you wouldnā€™t drive a brand new BYD if it was $10,000 like it is in China.

American EV manufacturers are consistently cutting their production citing waning demand. This is obviously false since the US is blocking cheap imports, car makers have everything to gain by limiting supply and keeping prices high.

NataliePortland ,
@NataliePortland@lemmy.ca avatar

Meanwhile BYD is absolutely exploding in popularity. The problem isnā€™t ā€œEV pessimismā€ itā€™s that some governments are fighting it so hard that itā€™s difficult out for citizens (USA) to make it work. Didnā€™t Biden promise a network of EV chargers across the nation?

And instead he made it illegal to import affordable Chinese cars. Iā€™m sick of seeing articles phrased like this

Americans created jazz and blues, and hollywood movies. All people the world over know American movies to the point that things like ā€œIā€™ll be backā€ or ā€œand my axeā€ are universal. Thatā€™s American culture. You know the ā€œgreat American songbookā€? So does everyone in the world. This is American culture.

My friend I respectfully disagree. You can get a cheeseburger anywhere in the world. Iā€™ve had one in Hong Kong, Kolkata, Copenhagen, and Croatia. Iā€™ve heard American pop music everywhere. Visit any other country and listen to the radio. In Italy you will hear one station with Italian music, and several with American music.

Anywhere in Europe or South America or Central America or Asia you will find English speakers. Have you traveled ? Everyone speaks English. Not every person, but English is the universal language in this world. Do you know why? Itā€™s not because of England. Itā€™s because of the prevalence of American movies, TV, and music. In other words: America has so much culture people donā€™t even see the forest for the trees. Like OP said, and even you canā€™t see it. Bro go eat a Big Mac and think about life. EDIT: sorry for taking that tone at the end, that was unnecessary. Iā€™m on vacation in Rome and Iā€™ve had a bit of wine. I saw the Pantheon today! Its incredible!
