The neck beards that judge someone's distro choice without knowing their use cases don't represent the Linux community. Just use the best tool for the job

Greg ,
@Greg@lemmy.ca avatar

I use Ubuntu on most of my servers and dual boot my gaming rig with Ubuntu Desktop mainly to host LLMs. I've been a Linux user for 25 years, I remember playing around with Red Hat pre 2000. Right now though, I want a solid distro that supports lots of hardware (my network consists of x86, ARM, Oracle Cloud, SBCs, etc), has a large community for support, and isn't likely to get abandoned. Ubuntu solves that

My daily driver used to be a MacBook Air running Linux. Apple hardware is amazing, I don't give a shit about the logo on my laptop. I only switched to MacOS for a daily driver when I started working for a company that gave me a MacBook pro so I sold my Air which was just gathering dust.

This sounds really fun! I'm putting this on my long to-do list

Fill the drive 100% using data duplicator then delete everything on the drive. Repeat a few times to ensure you scrub all blocks. There is no need to physically destroy the drive.

edit: fair criticism of this approach in cases when the data is unencryptd and the hard drives has bad blocks. I just wanted to give a counter to the destroying hardware approach which isn't necessary warranted

Greg ,
@Greg@lemmy.ca avatar

That's fair, I can appreciate an attack vector in cases where there are bad blocks and the drive was unencrypted. Luckily bad blocks are less common with modern SSDs and assuming the disk was encrypted, a few bad blocks are unlikely to expose any contents. So knowing the number of bad blocks and what data was stored would inform if a fill and empty approach would be suitable to sanitize the drive.

Why do you believe that most people you know don’t live and are just surviving?

Greg ,
@Greg@lemmy.ca avatar

Haha, that was literally the exact same point I stopped reading. I have emails older than this system and they weren’t stored on floppys 😂

Have you downloaded your podcasts while I’m another country or with a VPN set in another country?

I can’t verify this story with any reputable sources. Is this real or just boomerbait?

What ridiculous thing can I do during the eclipse next week?

I’m going to go see the eclipse next week, and I want to video tape myself doing something ridiculous. For example, I could enact some ancient spiritual ritual or play Total Eclipse of the Heart the whole time. I’m leaning more towards the ritual since I wouldn’t be annoying everyone around me and would have time to engage...

how would anyone know if a particular name is being unused?

I have a couple of nice domain hacks and I use them for email and random services I run so the root domain appeared to be abandoned. I received so many messages from people wanting to buy them I just started pointing them at other sites so they would stop hassling me. I’ve had one of these domains for nearly 20 years and it’s my main email address. I’m not selling because it would be a year long full time job just to update all my services 😅

Greg ,
@Greg@lemmy.ca avatar

Do you mean E2EE for voice calls and SMS? Otherwise why not use a trusted or personal VPN to solve this problem? I wouldn’t bother with trying to secure voice calls provided by a carrier as the recipient would also need those counter measures in which case why not use ab E2EE voice app like signal.

to avoid being overrun by that large truck heading into me

lol, I’m guessing you’ve never ridden a bike in Amsterdam

Greg ,
@Greg@lemmy.ca avatar

I live in Canada and seeing so many people riding around without helmets in Amsterdam felt weird until I realized how protected the cyclists are by the design of the road infrastructure. Cycling while sharing the road with a truck with no barrier in-between is common where I live so I appreciate your perspective.

Greg ,

I thought Twitter’s infrastructure was going to collapse within weeks after Musk made all those cuts and changes. I was obviously wrong because Twitter’s infrastructure didn’t collapse. I’m not speaking to the user experience on Twitter but from a purely infrastructure perspective, Musk was right and I was wrong.

Lol exactly, how dare you have a nuanced opinion!

This is great, I have a NAS and I still get slow data corruption for my long term data even using bit-rot resilient file systems. I would like a way to back up 5Tb of photos and videos on a single disc to bury somewhere for long term (decades) storage.

Don’t follow someone else’s path. I took a year off to travel in my 20s, a year off to sail in my 30s, and now that I’m 40 I’m planning another year long adventure in the next 5 years. I wasn’t born into wealth, I spent less than I earned, invested the rest, and avoided debt. Don’t get a big house in the suburbs with a mortgage, new lease car every 4 years, student loans, etc unless that’s what your actually want. Set yourself up for success with smart money management so you can do what you want.

Free tier cloud services like AWS, GCP, Oracle Cloud, and Azure. I use free tier VMs to host random services like VPNs, Mastodon instance, etc.

Tailscale has a free tier to connect your devices, VMs, and home servers.

GitHub pages is great for hosting any simple website for free.

Greg ,
@Greg@lemmy.ca avatar

AWS & Azure don’t offer free VMs but they offer other always free cloud services. I use Oracle Cloud’s Always Free VMs which are great. You can get two AMD-based compute VMs and one Arm-based compute VM with 24GB of RAM. I’ve been using them for nearly 2 years now. GCP also has a more basic always free VM offering.

Well you can’t be certain how many submarines are out there unless you have sonar and depth chargers

Greg ,
@Greg@lemmy.ca avatar

That data is available is the ActivityPub but as far as I know, you don’t have access to the vote data as a Lemmy user. You would have access to this data if you were running your own Lemmy server.

But honestly, let it go. Someone stole fake Internet points from you. It costs you nothing but it cost them 5 minutes of their lives. You’re having a fight with some stranger that doesn’t value their own time. Value your time and stop feeding these kinds of energy vampires. You deserve better! Have a wonderful day my friend :)
