In the mod logs I see posts/comments removed for violating rules. Is there anywhere someone can find these rules?

Is there a list somewhere? Are the rules different per instance?? I see:

Comment removed:

Rule 1.

I see this all the time, but I don’t know what rule 1 is. (Not me by the way, though I’ve had a few comments removed here and there)

Is there somewhere I can see where these rules are?

It's a bit messy but the rule in question might be from

  • the user's instance
  • the community's instance
  • the community itself

Typically when mods ban you based on violations of some global rule they'll highlight it, e.g. "global rule 1". And it's good form to include the short description of the rule being violated as the reason for the ban (e.g. instead of "rule 1", saying "rule 1 - uncivil behaviour").

Without further clarification, however, it's usually the community rules. Otherwise you'll likely get banned from your account (if you violated the global rules of your instance) or from the instance where the comm is.

In the desktop, to see the community rules you check the side panel:

And for the instance you see them on the main page of the instance:

Props for reading the mod logs, by the way. And if you want to know who did what, this site shows exactly which mod or admin is behind which moderative action.

The sidebar of the community in question.

For most, rule 1 is "be civil."

DoctorButts ,

Good on you for reading the mod log. If you look at it at least once every day, you'll realize which communities have good mods and which ones don't, and you'll be able to decide where you want to hang out.

Mastengwe OP ,

Yeah I check it ever now and again. It s pretty interesting. And absolutely know the good mods from the bad.

stoly ,

How do you check it?

DoctorButts ,

Not sure about apps since I don't use any, but on the website versions of both Lemmy and Kbin instances, there is a link either on the sidebar or at the bottom of the page that says Modlog. It defaults to showing you a global list from all federated instances of all the most recent moderator actions. On Lemmy instances the moderator's names are hidden but on Kbin instances it will always show you Moderator > action taken.

(edit: on Lemmy instances only): There's also a useful search feature at the top which lets you look almost anything up.

stoly ,

Thanks, good to know!

Listen.

They pretty much take being an admin mod to seriously and Ban and remove whatever they want. Not saying it's right nor do I agree.

It's petty and shitty but it's reality

ID411 ,

Main rule is mods do whatever they want, no discussion, no appeal.

Mastengwe OP ,

On rare occasion, I’ve seen them restore removed posts due to misunderstanding. Rare, but I’ve seen it.

DarkThoughts ,

Not sure why you're downvoted. It's very much true and was the same on Reddit. Moderation on Lemmy is a lot more lax comparatively, or goes into the opposite political spectrum due to all the Tankie instances, but ultimately it follows the same principle. It's all just private people, potentially on a power trip or too tired to differentiate the bullshit with honest mistakes, and there's no overarching self regulation that ultimately protects users from potential mod or admin abuse.

Depends on the instance/community as it could be either site rule or community rule. Either way, they're usually listed in the sidebar.

If you're referring to .ml, Rule 1 is saying anything they don't like (criticizing an authoritarian regime, etc)

Mastengwe OP ,

Oh I figured that about .ml. I’ve hear that rule 1 is basically a vague term used to remove anything that flies in the opposite direction in their wind tunnel.

Aside from that, I’ve looked in a lot of the communities where I’ve seen removed posts and there’s almost never a list of rules. Sometimes there’s bullet points, a paragraph or two. But seldom numbered rules. So I was wondering if there was some global list of rules.

No, no global list. There's not really a provision for that in Lemmy. It's just convention for community owners and site admins to list them in the sidebar.

Snooped on the modlog, and Ask Lemmy does have its rules in the sidebar. Depending on what UI you use (and whether you're on desktop /mobile), it may or may not be visible.

Ask Lemmy's rule #1 is this:

Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, and toxicity are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them

On LW, their site rules are laid out in the terms of service (linked above). Usually when a submission runs afoul of those, the mod text will reference that rather than a rule number.

Mastengwe OP ,

Awesome info! Thanks.

Wow, they specifically call out Sealioning. Rad.

Yeah, I noticed that. Makes sense given the nature of the community. Good call on the mods' part for that.

If you’re referring to .ml, Rule 1 is saying anything they don’t like (criticizing an authoritarian regime, etc)

It's a bit more complicated than that. Basically they distort every single rule, not just rule #1. Rule #1 is specially common because they label criticism against certain governments as xenophobia, but sometimes you get "rule #4" (because you insisted on a certain point) or "rule #2" (because someone said some stupid shit and you didn't play along).
