wildbus8979 , to News in Senate Republicans furious over Trump trying to derail FISA bill

Broken clock is right twice a day I guess. FISA courts are a fucking sham. 'member when they were going after the guild of librarians with warrants that prevents the accused from talking to a lawyer? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

themeatbridge ,

This is one of those situations where everybody sucks, and there’s no good side of the fight.

Trump wants to kill any foreign surveillance, because he was caught creceiving orders from foreign investors in his campaign. FISA is inherently flawed and should be reformed or replaced, but the American people do have an interest in monitoring foreign communications with our political leaders.

wildbus8979 , (edited )

Thing is FISA’s interests in political representation is a very small part of their actual mandate. Which should surprise no one since it was founded by Nixon. The brunt of it is targeted at regular people.

For example the vast dragnet surveillance of the NSA were approved under FISA. We know such surveillance is used regularly against social movements like occupy Wall Street, WTC protests, most likely BLM, etc.

Not a thing I say much, but Trump is on the right side on this one. For completely the wrong reasons, of course.

wildbus8979 ,

For completely the wrong reasons, of course.

That tends to be true in representative democracy as a whole, so it’s not that surprising either ;)

I wish Biden would say something to the effect of "I'm the president of the United States, I don't entertain 'demands' from candidates '.

Forestial , to Not The Onion in Trump demands drug test for Biden ahead of first debate

This may be a ploy for Trump to avoid the debates, since he knows he's likely to lose as in 2020. Biden refuses the drug test, Trump then refuses to debate....

I have certainly maxed cards in the past but these days, I don't know why, they keep raising my limit, I have 6 cards and a $96,000 credit limit between them. Talk about having enough rope to hang yourself.

WalrusDragonOnABike ,

Used to have a credit limit that was like double my annual income. Surely they knew there was no way I could afford even the interest alone if I came anywhere close to maxing out cards...

BombOmOm , to News in Credit card delinquencies surge, almost 1 in 5 users maxed-out: Research

Woof. Credit card debt is about the worst type of debt, only to be surpassed by payday loans. If you are finding yourself building either of these types of debt, you need to immediately make necessary life changes as your current lifestyle is not sustainable.

Nearly 70% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, same percentage can't afford a $400 emergency.

I can afford a $400 emergency, I'm just struggling to find an emergency that cheap...

BombOmOm ,

Quite a few trade skills are worth learning the basics of yourself. Fixing a minor plumbing problem can easily be $500 for a simple job, or $30 in parts and an informative video to do it yourself. It has been one of the consequences of telling everyone for decades trade schools are inferior to college. We are short on tradesmen, thus they are very expensive to hire.

As someone whose credit card has been at the 5000$ limit for a couple of months, I'd say it's capitalism that's unsustainable.

Between groceries, rent, and the occasional treat to make life barely bearable, I don't have anywhere to cut expenses. My vehicle is a bicycle. I live with three roommates in an old building in a neighbourhood that's more down-and-leaving than up-and-coming. I only wear thrifted clothes. My diet consists largely of legumes and rice.

I don't think you had any ill intent with your comment, I feel like you're coming from a place of empathy, but it does rub me the wrong way and gives me the impression you might be unaware of the realities that many people are living through right now. I'm relatively lucky, I at least have a roof over my head and never go (too) hungry. A lot of people have it much worse.

If you have an actual tip to deal with my debts, I'd be all ears, but I highly doubt cutting the little luxuries I do afford myself (an occasional craft beer, 50$ of weed every two months or so, and a takeout meal or two per month) would suddenly make my situation financially sustainable. It's the landlords and the grocery-monopolies that are unsustainable.

pennomi ,

Sometimes you can consolidate your debt to a lower interest block. It has helped several of my friends to fix their high credit card debt.

cm0002 ,

Oh yea, ill just down size my house. Looks at the housing market nope.

Oh maybe I could just sell it and rent an apartment, maybe even make a little on the sale to pay off this debt looks at rental prices oh that's not happening either

Ok that's fine, I'll just cut eating out and piece meal my way out of this debt...oh I already cut that, oh and grocery prices just went up...

Ah shit while I was writing that up my HVAC system just died andddd there goes another 2-3k towards my debt! Wooo!

Your comment is just as bad and annoying as those "Just stop buying avocado toast! Just budget!" Boomers

TheEntity ,

Sometimes the "necessary life changes" turn out to be a revolution to overthrow the current system.

I fully agree with the ICC, no one is above the law, especially when your killing innocent people for a stupid war. Remember, all wars start with lies. However, I will still choose the Democrats over the fucked up Government of Putin candidates, who lead us down a path of destruction.

If this is surprising to you, I’m sorry to have to tell you that early every US president has been a war criminal. But the US has been breathing rarified air in the international community for a long, long time. So what happens under these different presidents kinda gets waved away.

@dan1101@lemm.ee avatar

Not a smart comment to make Biden.

morphballganon ,

The simplest explanation of Biden's baffling blindness to how bad this looks is that the President has a master (or masters). There's someone who commands the President to support Israel, and the President obeys.

Presumably, after you get sworn in, you get taken to a quiet room where they turn the tape recorders off, and you get introduced to your real boss.

Conservative Presidents don't care, because they were planning to disregard the greater good anyway. But Dems in this position have to just make concessions, strive for X, Y and Z while also appeasing their elusive master(s).

Anyone disagree? Come up with a more plausible explanation. I'd love to hear it.

mecfs ,

you’ll sound a lot less conspiratorial when you replace “master” with SuperPAC

'I am a Zionist': How Joe Biden's lifelong bond with Israel shapes war policy

TheFriar ,

There are so many plausible explanations that make more sense than yours, but I’ll happily give you one:

The US has interest in a strong ally in the Middle East. They have massive companies—literally some of the biggest—that pretty much are “the economy” that all have interest in seeing war happen, because they sell weapons. It’s not about what’s right. It’s about what’s prudent for US interests. Money, power. It’s really not that complicated.

There isn’t a cOnSPiRaCY here. It’s fucking capitalism and geopolitics. They’re both horrible, murderous games, and the US is at the top of both, but the sands are shifting. You think this is bad? They’ll do much worse if the foundations crumbles beneath them any further. I feel like I bring this up every time someone seems baffled by Biden/democrats supporting Israel. It’s the country that’s in bed with Israel. Not Biden. Trump may seem like he “doesn’t play by the rules,” but that’s just because he doesn’t know them. But his greed and hatred would see him be 10x worse on Palestine. So buckle up, people. It’s all bad.
