Other sources are talking about a hard landing rather than a crash. Apparently they were already on the descent and wind forced one helicopter down in a wooded area not too far off the landing zone. Still doesn't sound pretty, but at least more survivable than an outright crash.

Was iTunes popular outside of the US? Everyone I know hated they intrusive software and DRM that prevented you from playing the songs elsewhere. Don't think I know a single person who actually purchased music there.

Just leaving this comment here to find your add-on again when I'm on my desktop, sounds great!

Did they switch off old.reddit.com in the end? That was the only useful front-end on desktop.

Ok at least something. Not going back, but that was always the last potential nail in the coffin.

Obscure screw added so appliance cannot be disassembled ( lemmy.world )

Basic blender went bad (motor ran but spindle wasn't rotating). I wanted to disassemble to see if it could be repaired. Three of the four screws were Phillips head. I had to cut the casing open in order to discover why I couldn't unscrew the fourth. It was a slotted spanner.

So you use the dremel to cut a groove into your screwdriver instead.

I've always hoped somebody would create basically a clone of Reddit, but without the politics and without being overly-policed. Where people aren't pushed away for respectfully voicing their opinion. Is Lemmy the answer?

If you block sufficient leftist/marxist instances and communities, you might not notice that this is essentially a socialist fanboy wannabe utopia.

I'd suggest to browse Lemmy by new, block a lot, refresh a couple times, and then eventually arrive at a curated, sanitized feed.

But Lemmy is far from unpolitical, merely a different color.

Why does Sync not display some comments?

I've posted something today and somehow Sync gives me notifications in my inbox for replies to that post, but when I open the post, it can't find any. I can interact with them just fine in the inbox and in the browser. But in Sync on the post, the number of replies is shown to be 4, while the comment section states that no...

    Sounds like mail.yandex.com should work for you. It's the Russian copycat of gmail, basically. But they allow anonymous signup with a "don't have" option for phone numbers, and they have next to no trackers on the website. That ones they have are easily blocked.

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    All of those are for the yandex browser, which is a dedicated app.

    I really enjoy young adult fantasy to take my mind off of work.

    I gave up on the way of kings twice, 400+ pages in and nothing happens. I get that it's a massive saga that requires a ton of world building etc., but all of his other books are much easier to lean into.

    At this point I'm not sure I'll try again.

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    Yeah they are shit, but aren't forced down your throat by the OS.

    I hate teams with a passion. As long as you have to work with more than one organization, nothing works whatsoever. You are constantly logged out, have to go through their stupid authenticator app, can't save a second login (only a private one, not an organization), links open in the wrong org (even if you are logged in), etc. etc.

    I've reached the point where I use teams exclusively in Edge, alongside with Outlook, because both of their desktop apps are utter crap.

    And the bloody "new" tag in the task bar icon is driving me nuts.

    Someone should face jail time for this piece of crap that I can't opt out of.

    And OneDrive as well. That piece of shit installed itself as the default save as location, and after removing it from my system, the save as dialogue now hangs for 20 seconds. And the policy to remove OD as a save location doesn't work whatsoever.

    I had no idea Constantine Films was considered a "key indie buyer", they seem rather mainstream to me. Not that it matters, just wondering.

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    Right, I guess that makes sense. They usually have quite good movies in their portfolio, whoever is making the decisions, has a good grasp on quality.

    Yeah those things get quite warm. Did you check the data sheet? Also, make sure it's intended for a continuous runtime.

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    Right, that does make it a bit more tricky. Is there any serial number or manufacturer?

    It says not to leave "subjective bad reviews". As in, objectively bad is fine.

    In the context of a game, let's say a clearly outdated graphics engine that everyone can agree on looks very dated. Or game-stopping bugs. Constant crashes. Etc.

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    Lemmy is just as political as reddit, just on the opposite spectrum. But yeah at least the memes stay in the meme communities, which I've all blocked. So that is nice, at the very least.

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    No idea, but I sure ain't sad about it.

    MIUI is sort of a homebrew OS broadly based on Android. Some things work, others don't. I wouldn't be surprised if Xiaomi and OPPO will eventually go the way of Huaweii and develop their own custom OS to lock users into their ecosystem. It's a China thing.

    And while I'm a big fan of Xiaomi products in general, I wouldn't use any of their phones without flashing the EU ROM first to ensure compatibility with free market tech. If you're willing to give that a try, the folks at xiaomi.eu are working hard to maintain compatibility.

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    That really was a long time ago in Chinese tech terms. I happen to live there, and it's astonishing how fast stuff evolves.

    I have a 4k TV and don't get it either. Watched the odd video in 4k and the colors are maybe a bit crisper, but that's about it. I'd have to compare movies side by side to actually spot the difference.

    Not worth it IMHO.

    Can't tell for screens though, I don't even know whether mine does 4k or not. Was part of the home-office package from my company. I'll have to check that tomorrow, only returning from a business trip tonight.

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    Mine is 65" and I really can't, unless I switch between files rapidly. 720p to 1080p, definitely. But larger, hardly.

    I'd say about 2.5 meters, maybe 3.

    I just did during my annual checkup 2 weeks ago shortly after turning 40, still got 20/20 vision. No idea then...

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    Maybe my TV is due for an upgrade then. Or the source movies I tried were 4k in name only but just some upscaled older ones... I'll do some more testing with more recent ones.

    I see, thanks a lot! I don't have any devices that read physical discs, so it's been streaming and alternatively sourced content exclusively. I don't actually mind paying for media, but living in China significantly limits my access to unaltered, genuine discs that come with English audio tracks, unfortunately.

    I'll see if I can get my hands on a full sized LOTR copy for testing purposes then. Thanks a lot for the lengthy response, much appreciated!

    After announcing increased prices, Spotify to Pay Songwriters About $150 Million Less Next Year ( www.billboard.com )

    When Bloomberg reported that Spotify would be upping the cost of its premium subscription from $9.99 to $10.99, and including 15 hours of audiobooks per month in the U.S., the change sounded like a win for songwriters and publishers. Higher subscription prices typically equate to a bump in U.S. mechanical royalties — but not...

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    Yeah I'm done with spotify.

    Back when it was a fiver, I could get the appeal and had a subscription myself.

    At 11 bucks it comes at the price of a CD per month, every month. I didn't buy that much music annually, ever. So right now we are entering a territory where streaming is exceeding the price of my regular music consumption patterns. I'll go back to buying physical media and torrenting whatever old stuff is no longer available and can't be found on ebay.

    Fuck 'em with a cactus.

    I do the same with youtube and adblock, so I guess that qualifies.

    The most popular VPN in China is called Astrill, and since vpn's and related discussions are forbidden, we refer to it as Ass Drill in messengers.

    I found this old girl on the side of the road, her name is Sunny! ( lemmy.world )

    I took her to the vet and found the owner. I also yelled at them for letting their old dog roam. She's a sweet old gal, and she shouldn't be out there. I'll be checking up on her. Thankfully, they're going to still let me see her, even though I chewed them out....

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    I live in a gated community where everybody is a dog owner, they all roam free most of the time. It's pretty awesome. We also have a whatsapp group with all neighbours, so when we want to know where they are, all it takes is a quick message into the group and the current food dispenser of choice will let us know.

    The best thing about that is that we can also just travel for a week or two without bothering. Our dog prefers to sleep in our house, so the next door neighbor will open the door at night & then let her do her thing the next morning.

    Wait, I'm in HK right now for business and can open it just fine from my hotel wifi. The website that is, I don't care about the platform and wouldn't use the app.

    I could play videos just fine without login though. Anything I'm missing?

    Around the turn of the millennium. Games were designed for offline use and had way more immersive campaigns, were shipped by and large ready and bug-free, and so were add-on campaigns.

    And since graphics were not as refined as they are now, additional efforts were placed on gameplay.

    My top list (by release year):

    • Diablo II (1996)
    • Dungeon Keeper (1997)
    • Half-Life (1998)
    • Thief: The Dark Project (1998)
    • Thief 2 (1999)
    • Dungeon Keeper 2 (1999)
    • Heroes of Might & Magic 3 (1999)
    • Gothic II (2002)

    Never had a console and don't get along with controllers whatsoever, so those are all referring to the PC versions.

    Should I keep paying for Proton?

    I moved over to Proton from Google because I liked the idea of having an alias for each service. After two months and a Mail Plus trial, I now pay for Proton Unlimited. I use Mail (due to alias linking), Calendar, and Pass often. I don't really use VPN that much (although it is useful sometimes), and Drive is just too slow. I...

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    Why not use Firefox Relay? It's a mail forwarding service with 5 aliases in the free version, and unlimited in paid. I'm using that in combination with my gmail account and it works beautifully.

    If you only occasionally need a vpn, the free tier in proton is probably sufficient (but you can't select servers, they will be assigned at random), and you could use windscribe as a backup (you can select servers in the free tier yourself, but traffic is limited to 10GB per 30 days).

    I read the auto-summary, which didn't mention it. Guess the bot isn't perfect.

    I try not to visit websites that have 100+ trackers installed. Naturally I block them, but I don't even want to give them the traffic.
