If you don't want to mess with the surface kernel, I've had 100 percent compatibility with OpenSUSE Tumbleweed. No different kernel required on all 5 of my surface devices.

Do people really have issues with HDR? I calibrated my TV once when I bought it and it's been incredible since.

rizoid ,
@rizoid@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I use Linux daily but honestly I don't game on it and I watch movies on my proper hdr10+ dolby display so HDR on Linux was never even a thought in my head.

Would this affect PorkBun if it were to be implemented?

Damn it man. I want arm laptops to be good. I can't justify buying anything apple even with Asahi as good as it is now.

Downloading/torrenting kids cartoons

Hey all. noob-ish pirate here. Skipping long winded post. I'm struggling to find sources to download/torrent kids cartoons. Some are easy, but I'm looking for paw patrol and it's scarce on 1337. The more modern stuff and the super popular stuff are a little easier though. Not really any information on the Wiki about this stuff....

For kids stuff I found stremio and torrentio to be easy if a bit convoluted to set up.

  • [solved] Audiobookshelf not fetching latest podcast episodes ( slrpnk.net )

    Hiya, quickly wondering if anyone has had any issues with ABS not fetching/pulling latest podcast episodes? I added my podcasts via OPML, around a week ago, and it doesn’t seem to be pulling in any new episodes. I’ve set a schedule to scan the lib each hour, but im assuming this feature is just for scanning for new local...

    Did you set up recurring searches for new episodes? Idk what it is set to be default but you have to set each show to do episode searches at a given interval.

    I got my kid a rugged smart phone. It’s pretty locked down and whatnot because he’s young but unfortunately there’s no way I’m going to send him to Public school without a phone, just in case.

    rizoid ,
    @rizoid@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

    Honestly I use Google family link. I know people on here are against Google but it just makes monitoring the kids easier.

    rizoid ,
    @rizoid@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

    Personally I have no foxes for you, but these are issues I’ve never seen myself. Perhaps there’s simply something wrong with your install and a clean reinstall would fix things.

    Garuda is great. It did get me addicted to the fish shell though and I’ve since moved back to windows for work reasons and I hate everything now.

    I have the same configuration running on all my devices, my kids and my wife’s too, it’s wonderful.

    I’m one of the crazy people who spent 4 grand on a 85 inch dumb display meant for stores to use as digital signage. Honestly a great decision. It’s no home theater display but damn if it isn’t just as good as any smart tv I’ve seen. I just have it hooked to a raspberry pi running librelec.

    rizoid ,
    @rizoid@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

    That was kinda the idea. We just moved and I wanted to get something set up that I wouldn’t have to worry about for at least a decade.

    rizoid ,
    @rizoid@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

    I’ve got a wife and a kid and I will say that I live in butt-fuck nowhere where everything is cheaper than anywhere else, however groceries are still getting way too expensive.

    I personally use fluent reader on my PC and phone. It’s the best one I’ve found so far.

    Gnome. I’m a Mac refugee from a decade ago. I’ve been using gnome with dash2dock and dash2panel together to make a sudo Mac os.

    I truly don’t have a problem with ads being in a free service. My anger will be based on how annoying they are when they roll out.

    What do you do for a calendar? New to selfhosting/homelab.

    Hey All, I am just getting started in my journey. Part of my goals is to de-google my life and am looking to start with my calendar. I want to to sync with my laptop and my phone. I was going to start reading about nextcould because it seems like it would have the stuff I need and more. My question is what does the community...

    Nextcloud is technically a solid product if your goal is to replace all the Google services. Personally I think it’s too heavy and I’ve had issues with using it vs using specialized apps for each service I’m replacing.

    I love a good personal library as a background for my video calls but honestly I do digital books cause I don’t have room.

    Looking for Cloud Storage Replacement, but I don't like NextCloud

    I’m looking for something to replace cloud storage for myself and family. I’ve tried to use/like NextCloud but honestly I despise it. The UI/UX really bothers me, and administering it is a pain. It also just does way more that I want or need....

    rizoid ,
    @rizoid@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

    Here to say Seafile. I also don’t like nextcloud. I used pydio cells for a while but the windows sync client absolutely never worked for me. Seafile has been flawless for 2 months for me.

    Preferred E-Book Library Server Software?

    Looking for a solution to manage and access the directory on my NAS that is full of ebooks. Optimally I want to be able to web reader them but also automagically send it to the email that sends it to my kindle. And e-book wise, the majority of mine are epub/mobi that I got from various kickstarters or humble bundles. But I also...

    rizoid ,
    @rizoid@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

    The epub reader needs work imo, however it’s more than usable and its what I use myself. Once the reader gets a few qol updates I’ll always recommend it over Cal-web or kavita.

    I’ve got an order out for a digital signage display to replace my living room tv. It was more than I would’ve spent on a “smart” tv but it’s a dumb box that I can plug anything I want into. If they sold dumb TV’s still I’d probably upgrade some of the other TV’s my family has, but fuck smart TV’s.

    rizoid ,
    @rizoid@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

    Sharp NEC is the brand I bought from. They have models you can put a raspberry pi directly inside of it. I’ve got a pi with librelec waiting for the screen to show up. However they’re really expensive. Sceptre makes more affordable dumb TV’s but they don’t make very large ones.

    rizoid ,
    @rizoid@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

    The 85 inch display I’ve got coming is listed as 4k HDR with full array local dimming. As far as actual accuracy is concerned, I’ve heard good things about Sharp NEC specifically but I won’t know until my unit eventually arrives.

    Docker is a great choice with lots of good tutorials. I personally use podman since all my servers are now running Fedora server and podman is installed by default.

    rizoid ,

    I use Firefox cause it’s easier to get people to switch to something that’s already in every app store.

    I use deemix to get songs and jellyfin/finamp to listen on my phone. I do miss the discovery of new music from things like Spotify or YouTube music. If anyone has suggestions for music discovery I’d love to hear about them.

    My in-laws have all Roku tvs. I had to go over and “fix” the TV’s for them cause they didn’t understand what the hell this was. I straight up just gave them my modded Nvidia shields and bought myself some more. Fuck that shit. We need a better open source tv like interface. I’ve used plasma big screen but it’s not ready for normal people with not Linux but fixing experience.

    rizoid ,
    @rizoid@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

    Maybe modded is the wrong word. They’re rooted with a different launcher and my pihole does it’s best to block telemetry. Getting rid of the Google launcher with ads on it is a major improvement.

    AI-generated content and other unfavorable practices have put longtime staple CNET on Wikipedia's blacklisted sources ( www.tomshardware.com )

    I moved to Antennapod then ended up using Audiobookshelf since I was already hosting it for my wife’s audiobooks.

    rizoid ,
    @rizoid@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

    So for antennapod I used gpodder Sync. It’s not really ideal imo but hosting audiobookshelf has been perfect for me. It’s all on the server so no matter what device I’m on, everything is the same.
